Pedestrian Tales From The Middle of the Road, #20

I've hit better milestones, I can assure you.  But today's story is my 20th one about a needless or careless pedestrian fatality here in our Central Florida area.  We can surely do better, folks...a better job of following the traffic laws ourselves, and a better job of teaching our children how to do so.

And law enforcement can surely do a better job of enforcing our pedestrian laws.  Does anyone really enjoy driving down the road at 40-50 mph and having someone just stroll out in front of them?  … (5 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From The Middle of the Road, #19

Falling under the watch of Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael Chitwood and Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson, here is yet another example of what happens when human meets machine.
It's a battle on the machine's home turf that the human will never win.

Tragedy, racism and a circus:  the death of Trayvon Martyr Martin

Editor’s note for those outside of our little part of America:  Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old young black man when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man.
I hate this Trayvon Martin story….hate it, hate it, hate it- for it’s a story filled with nothing but losers.  Death crowns no victors save the one(s) who’ve gone home to see the face of Jesus- and the circumstances surrounding Trayvon Martin’s death are known but to … (11 comments)

Real estate's hot...from "OC" to shining "OC"
It's been a long time...for many, a looooong time.  Signs that the overall real estate market is improving are everywhere, though- from Orange County, CA to Orange County, FL (or as I see it, from the West coast's "OC" to our "OC").

The story from California is encouraging, and goes along with what I've seen here in the past few months- it's become an investor's market once again.  Rents are going up- and that serves to help me overcome what it often my biggest … (5 comments)

Dear Dwight Howard:  Please go...just go!
A ton of folks have tried to get our Orlando Magic All-Star Dwight Howard to stay here- including the fine folks who crafted this sign:

Dear Dwight Howard:  Please go...just go!
Me?  I arrived here as a Houston Rockets fan over 4 years ago, and I can honestly say I've become a true Orlando Magic fan.  Went to the NBA Finals with 'em a couple of years ago...saw Kobe and Pau hoist that dang gold trophy as I swiped confetti from the top of my head.  I've seen some great Magic wins and … (2 comments)

ACCENTuate the positive...ATTITUDE is everything
Sounds simple enough, right?  Well, many folks have trouble with this concept- leading me to believe it might be a bit harder than I've always thought it to be.
Or perhaps the concept is easy and the practice is that elusive and unsolvable riddle many of us would be well served in by mastering.
ACCENTuate the positive...ATTITUDE is everything
I don't use ACCENT by accident- or solely for the cuteness of ACCENTuate.  Rather, a funny thing has happened over the last few days involving the way I talk.  I've had … (4 comments)

Posts like this one don't get featured- and I think I know why.  I mean, this is a "real estate site".  It's one where few of us would visit were we not a little interested in "real estate stuff".  Features are about mortgage rates, closing techniques and even some boring ol' property management-type things like repairs.
I'm honest enough to admit that I've written posts I considered feature-worthy, only to be disappointed when they weren't included … (46 comments)

Support our military, Mr. President- and leave TRICARE alone
In recent days, much has been said and written about Rush Limbaugh and a Georgetown law student who may or may not be a prostitute or a slut.  It's shaped up to be a nice diversion from President Obama's budget proposal that does our nation's active duty military folks and retirees a great disservice.

How are YOUR New Year's resolutions going?
Today's edition of the ActiveRain Daily Drop includes a post from Kerrie Greenhalgh (Marching Into Success, http://actvra.in/wH6).  In it, Kerrie questions why blog posts are up versus last year's statistics, but commenting is down (and markedly so, I might add).  Heck if I know.
You see, I wrote a post on the subject as well- ("In 2012, I resolve to..", http://actvra.in/rjL).  I looked back on the number of posts and comments I'd made over my then-year on ActiveRain, and felt I'd done a bit too much posting and … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From The Middle of the Road, #17 and #18
Man....after a brief pedestrian death hiatus, the Lord's calling folks home in two's!  For the police on the scene to go with "they appeared to have beem drinking before the crash" without the benefit of any blood tests or breathalyzer readings, I'd say they found must have found some beer cans in the vicinity.
Yet another preventable tragedy- this one falling under the less-than-watchful eyes of Leesburg Police Chief William "Bill" Chrisman and Lake County Sheriff Gary Borders.  Enforcement of our traffic laws is a great deterrent- and can save lives … (0 comments)

A good agent is key as market improves
In the past month or so, a number of stories have heralded what many of us here in the Orlando area have known for some time now- the market is improving.  I've written of how rents are increasing for the first time in a long time, and REALTOR.com's list of "Top Ten Turnaround Towns" has Orlando placing #3 in America as median sales prices continue to increase:

Hmmm.... Guess this is yet another example of what Michael Sargent, Executive Director of The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, would refer to as "basic preventative health care".
Food products labels are interesting things.  The ingredients list uses some...I don't know...whacked-out ranking system whereas the first things on the list are what the product contains the most of- and the last things on the list are what the product features least.  For some reason, this is usually stuff called FD& C Yellow 5 or something- but I digress.

My problem with Rush Limbaugh is...
Both the politically-inclined and the politically averse have surely heard tell of radio king Rush Limbaugh's comments about Sandra Fluke (or the lady who may forever be known as the "third-year Georgetown law student").
Following her testimony in front of some Nancy Pelosi kangaroo congressional hearing (where she lamented that birth control pills are just too danged expensive and could very well cost her upwards of $3,000/yr if she had to pay full price), Rush referred to Fluke as both a slut and a prostitute.
My problem with Rush Limbaugh is... not that he called … (28 comments)

Florida Whacked- All Things Whacked Aren't Equally Whacked!
Or maybe we could go with "All Things Aren't Exactly Whacked as They Appear"- inexactly whacked, if you will.  These recent cases from around here surely fit the bill for whichever moniker one chooses...
Case #1:  http://www.localwireless.com/wap/news/text.jsp?sid=147&nid=638257473&cid=378&scid=-1&ith=17&title=Local+News&headtitle=Local+News%22
Mom faces charges, daughter missed nearly 2 years of school‏ Now, this case has gotten a good bit of attention, and understandably so.  Most of the recent attention has been due to the fact that the cops apparently arrested the wrong lady- locking up a lady with the same name, but no daughter at all.  Hard … (0 comments)

He She Was Convinced He She Had It Under Control
A couple of things crossed my mind as I read Mel's post.  One is a saying I've long-used yet seldom followed:  We work to live- we don't live to work.  I guess I've got too much of my mother's influence in me- she being the one of 62 years and holding down 2 full-time jobs.  I often spend 2 full-time jobs' worth of hours on one job and suffer some fairly serious consequences for it.
I'm somewhat of a walking paradox, you see.  43 years old and never had the flu.  Never … (6 comments)

Wal-Mart at Valentine's- for all of your lovin' needs!
Nearly Speechless Sunday from last Sunday.  I made a last-minute trip to Wal-Mart for something (not even anything Valentine's-related), when I stumbled across this display.
Now, I'm all for Wal-Mart selling whatever the heck they can legally sell.  I'm well aware of the rather large condom displays they have in their pharmacies- and hope a number of our don't-need-to-be baby daddies will take advantage of them.
But.... come Valentine's Day time, is it really necessary to market adult pleasure/enjoyment items such as this new … (10 comments)

So how many more racists does ESPN have?
OK, cue the music..."duh, duh, duh...duh, duh, duh". Or is that "dumb, dumb, dumb...dumb, dumb, dumb"? Another day, another racist slur from the ESPN airwaves, another apology that makes everything better....
I love ESPN- let's get that out in the open. I love the Sports Reporters, Outside The Lines, SportsCenters of all type...and love it when GameDay makes their way to Tuscaloosa to highlight one of the games my 14-time National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide is playing.

"Breaking up is hard to do"...Neil Sedaka said it, and it's still true 50 years later.  Breaking up is rarely pleasant in any arena- and it surely can get you down dooby doo down down.
"Take this job and shove it"...whether you go Johnny Paycheck or the David Allan Coe-style on this one, it's gonna sound pretty defiant and less than pleasant.
Yes, you CAN separate without the hate
