72-Mile Garage Sale On Scenic A1A - November 14, 2009 in St. Johns & Flagler Counties

The idea started with the South Ponte Vedra Civic Association, another group of which I am a member and quickly grew to include all of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway (A1A). A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway in a National Scenic … (0 comments)

a1a: The North Atlantic Right Whales' Calving in Northeast Florida - 11/10/09 04:57 AM
The North Atlantic Right Whale-‘tis the season for birth in Northeast Florida off the coast of St. Augustine, FL.
On 11/10/09 at the Scenic & Historic A1A Corridor Management Council meeting at the St. Augustine Library, Joy Hampp with the Marineland Right Whale Project gave an insightful presentation on the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.
As a Right Whale volunteer in years past and having reported spotting Right Whales in St. Augustine and Vilano Beach, I enjoyed her presentation. The Marineland Right Whale Project works along the coastline from the St. Augustine to Ponce Inlets - a distance of about 50 nautical … (1 comments)

a1a: The Reef - Great Oceanfront Dining in St. Augustine, FL - 08/03/09 12:33 PM
The Reef - Great Oceanfront Dining in North Beach just a few miles from downtown St. Augustine.
We have enjoyed dining at The Reef Restaurant since it opened and before when it was Compton's. We would travel from Ponte Vedra for Compton's lobster specials and their wonderful Sunday Champagne Brunch.

Shortly after moving into our oceanfront home just a short walk north of this restaurant, we learned that the builder of our home, Coleman Construction, was also the builder of this restaurant. Our home was built in 1988, a year before Compton's.  Compton's was open between 1989 and 1999 when … (3 comments)

a1a: Aunt Kate's in St. Augustine, Florida - 08/01/09 10:52 AM
Aunt Kate's restaurant at the river in St. Augustine, Florida is in the North Beach neighborhood of Vilano Beach.

When we moved from Ponte Vedra to St. Augustine (North Beach) in 1998, the first night after we closed on the purchase of our new home, we went to dinner with our new neighbors. We walked a couple of blocks to Oscar's. I was in very casual clothes and had to borrow my neighbor's sandals, which were many sizes too big. But, I knew it was a casual place and would be fine. We had an enjoyable time on the back … (0 comments)

a1a: St. Augustine Rated Top 10 Best Places to Live - 06/10/09 04:31 AM
I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it. Yes, I already knew that St. Augustine is one of the best places to live, but it is so nice to hear others verify it. With the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal and the St. Johns River we have so many water choices. And our nation's oldest city has to be one of the most charming places ever. I feel like I am on vacation every day here. There is always stuff happening. I try to keep my website updated under Calendar of Events with all the happenings.
We are a small town, with … (0 comments)

a1a: Scenic & Historic A1A Meeting today at 3 p.m. in S. Ponte Vedra - 05/11/09 01:59 AM
Many people in northeast Florida traverse Scenic and Historic A1A in St. Johns County from Jacksonville, through St. Augustine to Flagler County, especially on weekends. This past weekend was no exception with the most traffic I have seen in a long time. It was a challenge crossing A1A to enjoy the beach, but it was possible and well worth it. With The Player's Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, the Ancient City Crawfish Boil in St. Augustine, The Sunday Market in Vilano Beach, and Mother's Day, much was happening in our area. We had such fabulous weather, too!

a1a: Garbage Pickup to move to Mondays in S. Ponte Vedra - 04/29/09 10:16 AM
John Foley, the General Manager of Seaboard, called me this afternoon to inform me that garbage pickup for the South Ponte Vedra area will be moved to Mondays starting May 25th, 2009. They will mail a letter to the impacted residents and also place information on their front door to alert them to this change. Recycling and yard trash pickups remain on Wednesday. This change impacts properties from 3rd Street (the castle and the way to Cap's) north.
This is a welcomed change and one that Friends of A1A championed. The residents on A1A in South Ponte Vedra have complained for … (0 comments)

a1a: Bury Utilities by the Coast? - 05/06/08 12:47 AM
As chair of Scenic & Historic Corridor Management Council and President of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, I am frequently asked about burying utilities along our scenic highway. We get push back from Florida Power and Light (FPL). So in an effort to once again understand this issue, I went to FPL's website and found:
FPL maintains, "The reliability of overhead and underground lines is comparable...The key difference between underground and overhead lines is that it typically takes more time with underground lines to diagnose the problem and make repairs. This difference in repair time is best characterized in days rather … (0 comments)

a1a: Beach Renourishment - St. Johns County - 11/26/07 05:50 AM
Congress Mica held a Beach Renourishment roundtable at the GTMNERR on Monday, November 19, 2007 that I attended.
He said the feasibility study would be completed in 2010.
Then an appropriations bill will have to be passed by Congress.
Not until the bill is past can the Army Corps of Engineers being work on the design and specs to fix the beach.
After the design work then the actual renourishment can begin. So I am guessing 2013 at the earliest unless some severe action is taken to expedite the process.
Following are my detailed notes from the meeting:
Mica reported that he is the top Republican … (0 comments)
