anita hart fuller: Old Searcy AR, People's Bank. First Security now, K.Elnee Auto, Ford - 04/21/24 10:16 AM

Expertly enlarged picture of a car on Arch Street in downtown Searcy AR many years ago!  And here is the original picture.  Looks as it there are two car agencies around Peoples Bank which is now First Security Bank.  One is Ford and the other looks like K. Elwee Auto Co.  Anyone remember it?  I have never seen a more professional enlargement and it was done years ago by a blog friend.
Last but most important is a picture of a lady standing beside the door of this bank and she was the one who renamed it.  She suggested First Security Bank … (7 comments)

anita hart fuller: Letona AR hotel. Just sold. Old picture. Now picture. Historic home. - 04/21/23 07:50 AM

Hotel in distance from Depot, still standing.  Just sold again.
Letona Arkansas is a little distance from Searcy AR and has been a popular small town for a long time.  The main reason for the first picture above was to publicize the MFNA depot.  A hotel shows behind it!  Of course, with a train coming through the town, passengers possibly needed a place to stay for a night or two.  That hotel still stands!!
It was listed and just sold again.  It was on the market for 178 days and closed on 4/20/23.  The courthouse says it was built in 1860!!  The MLS … (4 comments)

anita hart fuller: Searcy girl. Maude Crawford book. Girl's State. 1956. Who was she? - 07/31/22 01:25 PM

Anyone recognize the Searcy girl in the picture of Maud Crawford serving tea at Arkansas Girls State?  My friend and great Searcy Sleuth has found this picture in the newspaper or on line and knew the girl.  Here's what Anita wrote about it.
"Arkansan and author, Beth Brickell, has published another book "Solving the Puzzle of the Disappearance of Maud Crawford" - and recently the Arkansas Democrat Gazette  published excerpts.  Searcy Sleuth, Anita Fuller, who attended Girl's State in l953, recognized a Searcy classmate in the photo, and Jo Ann Cooper verified:  Dorothy Anderson Maple.  JoAnn attended Girls State with Dorothy in … (2 comments)

anita hart fuller: Karen Fuller. Off duty...but still a beauty. With roots in Searcy AR. - 06/05/22 07:48 AM

Karen Fuller in Searcy AR
Karen Fuller has returned to Arkansas.  She was a top TV news anchor a few years back in Arkansas....so good that she was stolen away by other news stations in other states.  She has returned and is working for KTHV  11 as an early morning TV anchor.  Her mother, Anita Hart (sometimes I call her Tart) Fuller grew up in Searcy AR and married Bobby Fuller and they traveled the world.  Anita has provided SO much history for this blog.  Just google her and she will pop up many times!
I was lucky enough to have Karen and … (6 comments)

anita hart fuller: Anita Hart Fuller pops up again! Karen Fuller. Channel 7 news. AR - 12/13/21 09:59 AM

Anita Hart Fuller
The lady on the left above has been so helpful with this blog.  She has supplied us with lots of historical pictures and information.  Google her and she how many times she pops up.  Here she has popped up again!  An old scrapbook has her in it with this article about saving lives making up a full page.  Note the date 1995.
And those of us in Searcy AR remember her daughter, Karen Fuller, who worked as a beloved news anchor in Little Rock AR for many years.  The scrapbook, actually, is about Karen.
Now Karen and Anita have moved back … (3 comments)

anita hart fuller: Searcy AR girl in Giant movie. 1956. Martha Gene Randall - 10/17/19 05:00 AM

Giant!  One giant of a movie!
I was watching Giant, the 1956 movie that is still a great movie and one that I had not seen since it was first shown.  One memory is still sad.  I heard that James Dean, my idol at the time, had died.  In fact, he died before the movie was released.
Anyway.....back to the subject.  Anita Hart Fuller, our super Searcy sleuth for history, insisted that I pay attention to the movie when two beauty operators come out and deny service to a character because she is Mexican.  She said one of them was a Searcy girl … (14 comments)

1950 Basketball Boys Searcy AR High School
How do you like this group of guys?  They posed in 1950.  Boys used to wear short shorts for sports.  What happened?
Anyway, these guys were named by Anita Hart Fuller at some time in the past.  The names are attached to the photo which was loaned to me by Sherry Person.  Front row:  D. D. Young, E. L. McCollough, Jim Christian, Buddy Huff, Chub Smith and Kenneth Smith (no relation).
Back row:  Don Christian, Don Brown, Glen Adams, Bruce Douglas, Elwyn Hughes, James (Red) Morgan, Carthel Mac Angel, and Jimmy Dale Adams.

anita hart fuller: This looks dangerous. What is it? White gasoline iron? - 10/16/18 11:30 AM

Our blog buddy, Anita Hart Fuller, has just been shocked when a friend of hers brought out this old item.  She, of course, wants to share it with all of our Searcy Sleuths.  She said the friend said it was an old iron which operated with gasoline!
Gasoline!  No wonder I never saw one of these at my mother's home.  She would have considered this thing too dangerous to operate.....plus there was probably no place to get white gasoline which is what the friend said it used.  I believe the friend reported that you turned on the gas and there was water … (9 comments)

anita hart fuller: Searcy AR folks. Another great snapshot of friends on Arch Street. - 07/04/18 07:15 AM

Jody's new car?
Here's another great old snapshot that was loaned to me with permission to share on this blog.  The writing was underneath the scanned photo and tells who was there......even down to the dog's name.  But we don't know who owned the dog!
Jody Taylor, so it says, was home from the Air Force and got himself a new car.  I assume the car on the left was it.  My understanding is that he and Anita Hart lived across the street from each other on West Arch Street in Searcy.
Note the street had a sidewalk!  I hate that eventually builders … (8 comments)

anita hart fuller: Birthday party! Another one! Inside this time. Anita Hart Fuller. - 06/18/18 05:50 PM

The last one!  Promise!
We have just had two birthday parties from many years ago on this blog.  I promise that this is the last one and it really needs to have someone tell us who these lovely girls (and we are down to two handsome boys) were.  Anita Hart, our little birthday queen, is in the middle probably opening her gifts.  My bet is that lots of these kids were present in the other two parties that we have published.  They have just become older! Check here for one of them and check here for the other one.
They have moved inside … (4 comments)

anita hart fuller: Birthday party continued. Searcy AR Arch St birthday gang. - 06/18/18 09:37 AM

Bear with me.  We were on the subject of birthday parties of the past and how much they brought out the dress clothes and the good manners for the youngsters.   Well, here we are with the possible same bunch of kids on the same street but just a little bit older.  Anita Hart Fuller is right there beside the cake and we can recognize her and surely she can tell us who the other kids were.  Would it be fun to compare this one to a picture of a birthday party today?  I think it would.
Location:  Arch Street, Searcy AR.

anita hart fuller: Birthday Party. Fun in the sun in Searcy AR. Arch St. - 06/17/18 08:09 AM

Remember days like this?  It is probably typical of parties held long ago.  All the kids are told to look this way for the picture but the sun is so bad on their eyes that they have to put the arm up.  Note all the shadows of the grownups looking on for the fantastic picture of the kids having a party.
I believe this party was being held on Arch Street in Searcy AR.  It says that it is Anita Hart's party but we don't know which one was Anita.  (Perhaps she will tell us.)  Looks as if it had a slightly … (6 comments)

anita hart fuller: Visit to top of Empire State Building. Old picture post card, Searcy family. - 06/16/18 06:41 AM

Here is a great old post card showing a Searcy AR family visiting the world's tallest building.  As they climbed to the top, the photo guy was there to snap their picture and sell it to them.  The picture had to be made prior to 1972 because that is when the Empire State Building in New York lost its prestige of being the tallest.  Doing a little googling revealed that it is now the 5th tallest in the US and the 37th tallest in the world!
I like the styles of the folks in the picture.   For dress-ups back then women did … (10 comments)

anita hart fuller: Like mother, like daughter! Bicycles were fun and treasured. - 06/13/18 04:50 AM

Bicycles!
How many of us can remember our first bicycles and how they were treasured and how we were so thrilled when we got one, even if it was a used one, beat-up and not beautiful!  I do!  It was there on the front porch of the old house we lived in.  My dad had sneaked it in there for me and my sister.  We were ecstatic!
Here we show a mother and a daughter on their bikes.  I don't think it is on the same day.....but possibly in the same neighborhood.  Corinne Hart, who lived to be 100, is the top picture.  … (11 comments)

anita hart fuller: Who had 2 and 7? Phone numbers in Searcy AR. Trivia question? - 06/05/18 09:54 AM

REMEMBER PHONE NUMBERS?

It was easy when they were small numbers.  Anita Hart Fuller, our blog source for so many things, has an old phone book with phone numbers and addresses. We thought it would be fun to see who had the first 10 phone numbers in Searcy and the locations.  We were unable to track down the numbers 2 and 7.  Perhaps you Searcy Sleuths can help us out.  Here goes.....
1.   Smith-Vaughan Merc. Co    201 W. Arch
2.   ??????
3.  White County Jail  413 N. Spruce
4.  Ivan Quattlebaum Grocery & Ivan Quattlebaum Transfer   217 W. Market

anita hart fuller: First United Methodist Church Searcy AR. Old post card. - 05/19/18 11:48 AM

Another treasure from Anita Hart Fuller's collection of pictures.
This seems to be a post card with the congregation of First United Methodist Church posing in front of the historic church.  There is no date on it so we'd have to guess at the date.  The church windows seem different from the windows today but the card was in the collection of Corinne Hart's.  Corinne Hart lived to be about 100 and knew so much about Searcy AR and lived so much of Searcy's history.  Anita shares some of those pictures with us.
I'd like for you to do what I did......save this … (10 comments)

anita hart fuller: Dolls never grow old. Arch Street, Searcy AR. Anita Hart Fuller. - 02/13/18 07:19 AM

This old picture was shared by guess who?  Of course, Anita Hart Fuller, who grew up in Searcy AR, married a Searcy boy, left Searcy but still has a love for this town and stores many, many memories to share with us.
This picture was made on Arch Street with the "Woodson" house in the background.  It is found at the corner of Arch and Sowell Streets and deserves lots of respect.  Anita lived across the street.  I asked Anita who the little girl with her was and she couldn't remember who she was.  So I said, "Anita, what was the … (12 comments)

anita hart fuller: Anatomy of a shadow box. 50's relived. Exquisite picture. Anita Hart Fuller. - 01/14/18 12:55 PM
I have gained a picture that is in a huge shadow box.  The anatomy of the box is amazing.  Look at these pictures.  The box is 7" deep, 36" tall, 30" wide and probably weighs 30 pounds and is made of solid wood.
Here is a corner.
And here is the back of it with what looks like a final fastener.
And now you must see the whole box propped up against the wall.  The picture is surrounded by velvet and has gold trim around the edge of the picture.
What's that?  You think you have seen this picture before?  Yes, you have if you … (8 comments)

anita hart fuller: Searcy Rialto was host to Ricardo Montalban, Anita Hart Fuller - 12/17/17 12:11 PM

I have to ask Anita Hart Fuller whether the audience screamed and fainted when the Searcy Rialto Theater was visited by famous Ricardo Montalban and she attended and GOT HIS AUTOGRAPH on this sheet of paper.  Or did the screaming just start with Elvis and the Beatles?
So I am asking her on this blog.  She has graciously agreed to share this with us and she points out that the lipstick mark is where she kissed it and she has treasured it for so many years.  On the other side is the autograph of Julia Adams but she does not remember … (13 comments)

anita hart fuller: Artists and houses. John E Keller. Searcy AR. Griffithville AR. - 04/21/17 08:18 AM

Super Sleuth Anita Hart Fuller shared this picture with me because she said it was the home of her childhood friend Alice Anne O'Donell who lived at Griffithville AR, a small town several miles from Searcy AR.  This one is just a photograph of the original watercolor painting done by John E Keller, a very successful artist in Searcy.   Anita had it done and presented the original painting as a gift to her friend.  The date signed by Mr. Keller is 1993.

The question might be why?  Why did Anita commission this painting?  We have the answer to that question!  Anita … (13 comments)
