arkansas: 1953 Arkansas Girls State, Group picture, 27"x7". Legs, girls. Anita - 09/01/24 10:09 AM

WOW!
Lots of legs!  And girls.  Are you present?  This is an old and somewhat fascinating picture of a huge group of girls who were selected to attend Girls State in 1953.  It was given to me by one of my most dedicated Searcy Sleuths, Anita Hart Fuller.  I had to put an arrow beside her head.  She and others (I don't know who they were or where they are in this picture.) represented Searcy AR.

It is fun to look back and notice styles at that time. Plaid shirts and caps and shorts were in. Notice one girl on the front … (6 comments)

arkansas: Arni Anderson, Artist, Searcy Ties. Gone but his art lives on. - 07/07/24 08:17 AM
Who remembers Arni Anderson?
He was a very good artist and was a Harding College (now University) graduate.  He attended and then taught Art at the school during the years of 1972 through 1976.  A very good memory for all of us left in Searcy is the coming of McDonald's restaurant to our town.  The restaurant manager commissioned Arni to do paintings of historic homes and buildings.  In this article     https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2013/oct/13/harding-alums-coloring-book-sparks-interest-searcy/    Arni says he did from 30 to 40 paintings of historic homes and buildings in Searcy that were to hang on their walls.  Here is a picture of Arnie.  … (2 comments)

arkansas: Ragged? Sure. Saved since 1955! Beebe vs Searcy AR football. Know any? - 06/23/24 07:47 AM

Searcy Lions vs. Beebe Badgers
Memories sometime just fall in your arms....so it seems.  This old program did that to me.  Hubby's name is in this football line up.  Way down at the extreme bottom it gives a possible date of 1955!  Who won?  Someone from the Searcy Sleuths may remember.  I was not in Searcy AR.  The front side advertised Dizzy's Drive Inn and The Beebe News so the game must have been in Beebe.
Sure, it does seem pretty ragged but what wouldn't be after about 69 years and saved by a football star?  Check and see if you know any … (4 comments)

arkansas: Bobby Petrino visits Searcy 2/23/12. Saved for Tyler Higgins pic! - 12/04/23 11:41 AM

Bobby Petrino is back in the news because he is back in Arkansas.  I am not a football fan so why did I save this Arkansas Democrat Gazette news article? One reason!  An adorable red headed young fan was in the picture.  Let's blow it up!
Here is the enlarged picture of Tyler getting his shirt autographed by Coach Bobby Petrino.  See the adoration in his eyes!  He loved the Arkansas Razorbacks and the coach.  He was about 10 or 11 years old with a wonderful abundance of red hair!   Wonder where this shirt is now?  It may be valuable!!
Who is the … (3 comments)

arkansas: Claim your money! OR....give a gift to a friend free! ClaimitAR.com - 02/01/22 11:03 AM

There is money waiting for some folks......but not for me YET.  Therefore, I decided a good name for this blog would be, Give a Gift for Free.  That is what I did.  This website is easy to find and search.  So I decided to search for money that might be for family members.
There was money!  My daughter's name search said she had $50 waiting for her.....and I gifted her with this information.  She claimed it....got it....thanked me for the information. But that was not the end.  A few weeks later while I was searching, her name was there again!  And this … (4 comments)

arkansas: Hotel Mayfair, Searcy AR, 1936 historic picture. Landscape - 08/07/19 12:30 PM

Hotel Mayfair, Searcy Arkansas
This picture was published in the August 1936 White County Centennial Edition of The Daily Citizen and White County Citizen.  It's the Mayfair Hotel in downtown Searcy and what impresses me the most if the extensive foliage around it.  If the trees were this big at that time, how big must they be now?  If they are still there.....
The Mayfair has been a part of the history of Searcy for so long!  Finding this picture was fun.  Even better pictures of the Mayfair can be reached from this older blog.  Click here to see the hotel in other … (3 comments)

arkansas: We should have bought that Searcy HS band uniform! - 06/19/18 05:47 PM

A friend and I were visiting an estate sale a few days ago.  The sale was for property from a very well known Searcy AR person who had passed away.  She had grown up in Searcy, moved away for years and years, and then moved back.  There in the house was hanging a white-looking jumpsuit thing with letters on the back.  Searcy High School Band.  It was tiny looking so she must have been a small high school girl when she wore it.
But we passed it by and went on our way.  Then, look what has popped up!  A picture with … (4 comments)

arkansas: Wash day 1958. The way it was before automatic washing machines. - 02/24/18 07:37 AM

I remember days like this.

My mother was "tickled to death" when she was finally able to have a washing machine like this one.  It was still work to wash all the clothes and hang them on the line to dry but not nearly as hard as it was when she used an old iron pot over a fire to boil the dirty clothes.  And PULL THE WATER UP OUT OF THE WELL!
This great photograph was loaned to me by Sherry Quattlebaum Person.  Her father was Ivan Quattlebaum and he collected lots of things, including photographs.  This photo could possibly have been … (7 comments)

arkansas: Drug stores. Remember when they looked like this? - 08/05/16 04:46 AM

Drug Store?  I just guessed that it is a drug store bcause of the stools at the counter and the chairs and tables on the side.  Perhaps it is a diner?  It's another old picture that I found at an antique store but it unfortunately does not have a name or date on it.  It has to be old with the men in ties and the neat tableclothes and the lady looking as if she has on one of those stretch belts that used to be popular.  Also notice the very high ceiling that appear to be old boards.  If anyone … (3 comments)

arkansas: Bill's Grill, Searcy AR. Now just a memory. It has been retired. - 04/18/16 11:44 AM

This is one of my favorite old Searcy pictures on a post card.  I like the way it was noted at the top, "Stayed here once."  And the old cars gathered around show its popularity with Searcy folks.  I have written several blogs about it.  But this one is perhaps the saddest one.  Look what happened on April 18, 2016.

Thanks to a friend who called me to tell me what was happening.  I rushed over for this picture and saw the big jaws grabbing that roof and decided not to get any closer than I was standing for this final picture … (0 comments)

arkansas: Thida AR, population 81. I visited for the first time. - 02/25/16 11:30 PM
I went to Thida Arkansas for the very first time yesterday.  A native of Thida, Debra Wilson, showed me all around.  She grew up there, walked the streets there, and met her husband there.  It is a lovely little town.  Here are three pictures of the town.
This is an old store, no longer in use but notice the writing.   Looks as if it says, Attn, Deb!
Here's the post office, a lovely little brick building that is probably open a few hours a day.
And here is the Thida AR general store which IS open.  It is rustic in appearance on the outside … (3 comments)

arkansas: Permit me to brag. NAR President Chris Polychron from Arkansas. - 12/15/14 05:35 AM

A lady can brag, can't she?
Here I am on the extreme right at some national or state REALTOR meeting.  I can't actually remember the date but we were all younger.  On the right, second row, was Chris Polychron, a good friend to all of us in Arkansas.
On the front row with me was Tina Daniel, left, and her mother, Johnnie Beavers, in the center.  Tina died just a few short months ago and we miss her all the time.  She was a CRS instructor and traveled all over in her teaching career.  She was from Searcy also.
How … (0 comments)

arkansas: J W Blevins Livery Stable Heber Springs AR and Searcy AR Stage Line - 01/29/13 12:06 AM
Vac Veterans from facebook has put up another old picture.  It shows one really fancy stable.
It is labeled Searcy and Heber Daily Stage Line. J W Blevins Livery Stable.
It shows men and horses and a stagecoach. One guy may be on crutches?
I have never seen this picture before but Mary Cargile gives a possible explanation for its location. Go to the facebook page and read what she says.  And thanks, Vac, for allowing me to repost it.
Vac Veterans also says it has "Main St" in pencil on the back of the picture.

arkansas: We've come a long way, Baby! 1920 Searcy High School Yearbook pictures from Don Thompson. - 12/31/12 11:58 PM
You gotta study these pictures.  I glanced at them when Don emailed them to me and thought, "Why are those people all dressed alike?"  I still don't know but going a little further and looking to see if there were any familiar names, I found a lot of humor.  First see the picture of the Domestic Science Class.

Now see the Officers of this class.  Also note that there are NO boys in this class.

Note the Senior Officers.  Head Advisor, Chief Cook, Spoon Licker, Principal Server and Hater of Dish Washing.  The Junior Officers were T. Kettle, U. … (9 comments)

arkansas: Robbins - Sanford Merc. Co. Searcy AR old advertisement Woman's Missionary Society Cookbook - 10/20/12 12:44 AM
Studying the ads in an old Woman's Missionary Society cook book reminds me that Searcy has not forgotten her history.
Robbins-Sanford exists again in the form of a grand hall for holding get-togethers of all kinds.  It is located in the same spot downtown and all of Searcy loves it.
Here is the ad from the old cookbook that dates back to the 20's.

I left the recipes on this page for folks who like to cook.  Read the "Crackers and Cheese" one.  Today's cook would go to the cupboard (pantry now) and take out the can of Kraft's Easy … (16 comments)

arkansas: Mushrooms! How I wish I knew which ones are not poisonous! - 09/19/12 07:03 AM
Taking a walk can be rather boring.  But while I was walking this morning I got all excited about the crop of mushrooms that had just popped up.
These are giant mushrooms!  One of them would fill your plate!  They looked like the ones in the grocery store that cost major dollars.

So can someone give us a few lessons on how to harvest a mushroom or toadstool as they are sometimes called in the South?  I have only known one person in my life who felt confident about gathering fresh mushrooms and safely eating them.  She no longer lives … (6 comments)

arkansas: What happened to all the HUD houses in Arkansas? - 11/22/11 07:23 AM

What happened to all the HUD houses for sale?

Anyone who is shopping for a HUD home has noticed that the listings for Arkansas properties on hudhomestore.com have all but disappeared. It happened suddenly, around mid-November, much to the dismay of bargain hunters throughout White County and around the state.
Here’s what seems to be going on.
A bankruptcy case filed in the Jonesboro area has caused a temporary suspension of many HUD transactions in the state of Arkansas. According to a story published Nov. 14 on The City Wire (www.thecitywire.com), a Chapter 13 bankruptcy judge in … (6 comments)

arkansas: Searcy Arkansas sleuths are presented another puzzle house. - 10/15/10 04:59 AM
Probably 35 years ago I rescued a batch of photographs of houses in Searcy Arkansas that the husband of this lady had designed and built.  The pictures were nice and clear black and white and the floor plans were included.
This particular house sold and I gave the old photo to the buyer.  He is no longer the owner now and I asked for a copy of the picture back for this blog.  Blogging at that time was not even in my vocabulary. So Searcy Sleuths see if you recognize this one.

Mystery not solved so here it is … (19 comments)

arkansas: Unintentional Double Jeopardy. - 06/18/10 10:34 AM
The builder of this house spared no expense while constructing it.  The best of everything was put in.  The best of tile was selected and securely placed on both the front and back porches.
They forgot something, however.  When it rains the tile gets wet.  In the mornings dew is heavy and can also be on the front and back porches.
The tile that they chose was a clean-looking white.  It is also slick!  Even with no rain this tile is slick and smooth.  When it is wet it becomes a floor that can send you flying in no telling which … (8 comments)
