arkansas: Letona Arkansas depot with our favorite Corrine Hart waiting there. - 11/02/09 12:41 PM
The White County Historical Society has a collection of pictures on its website and they've said we can share them.  Here's a great one of the train depot in Letona, Arkansas.
Letona is about 15 miles from Searcy and has 215 residents at this time.
We're exploring how the trains went to every little town and below is a picture of the Letona depot.  But first we we found this picture of a young woman named Corrine Harrison Hart at about 1924 sitting at the depot.  Corrine is Anita's mother.   Anita is a contributor to this blog.  Anita, do you think the man … (13 comments)

arkansas: This is Arkansas. It is a good picture of country enjoyment. - 10/20/09 01:12 AM
I used to drive my kids to a place called Slippery Rock Ford and they'd wade in the water on the slippery rocks.  This little bridge was a favorite.  It gets underwater at times but evidently it holds up pretty darned good.  In fact, the water looks a bit high for wading at the time of this picture.
A friend sent me these pictures of his little Volks at the bridge.  He and his wife had gone for a drive and ended up here.  They are great pictures showing some of the beauty of our state.  The Volks, however, shows a little reluctance to … (18 comments)

arkansas: Arkansas had an earthquake! I didn't notice. But I noticed this clever writeup in our state newspaper. - 10/17/09 01:36 AM
How does a newspaper cover an earthquake that no one feels?  That does pose a challenge.  Our state newspaper, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette on October 17, 2009 ran the following editorial.  I read it this morning while drinking coffe and loved it.  I loved the large letters that got smaller and smaller.  The humor was there and the earthquake got plenty of coverage.  I hope they don't mind that I scanned it and am letting you read it.

arkansas: Let's not forget to be thankful for the streets of Searcy Arkansas. Look at this! - 09/15/09 12:38 AM
Here's a historic view of West Arch Street in Searcy Arkansas.  Notice the building on the right was under construction. Notice the streets look like mud!  Looks like a wagon with passengers heading West.  On the South side you can see a Drug Store sign and that must have been Stotts which is still in existence.
And look at all those poles!  Telephone poles, light poles, poles to hold up awnings!
This picture should make us appreciate how thing have changed.  When we feel like griping about a pothole, remember this picture.  Also look at our lovely areas where the utilities are … (8 comments)

arkansas: I can't believe I did that! Watch TV for two hours, that is.... - 05/21/09 02:22 AM
TV is not my thing.  I rarely watch and haven't learned how to go beyond VCR and haven't taped any favorite shows in ages.
But being from Arkansas, one hour away from Conway, I decided to be loyal and watch "American Idol" Wednesday night.  I did take a book with me to read during commercials and when I was bored.
That Adam Lambert reminded me of a new Elvis but he wasn't good at moving the hips.  The glamorous face look I liked.  But the newspaper today reported that Kris Allen is "humble," a good church goer and person.
SO.....Conway came … (18 comments)

arkansas: What a difference a little power-washing will make to your listing. - 03/09/09 01:59 PM
In Arkansas, a big problem we have is with mildew growing on the outside of our buildings.  Brick is not so bad or else we can't see it.  Vinyl is tough to keep clean.
A new foreclosure coming up for sale is in good shape except for the look of the outside.  It has an attractive exterior, a shop (GUYS LOVE THESE!) and great kitchen and 4.5 acres!!
The end of it looked like this when I first visited it.
I had the power-washing house-cleaning guy go over and now it looks like this!

Would you agree that whatever it … (19 comments)

arkansas: Ghost signs in Arkansas are found on many buildings. - 03/02/09 08:51 PM
The University of Arkansas Press in 1997 published a book called Ghost Signs of Arkansas  written by Cynthia Lea Haas with photographs by Jeff Holder.  It shows lots of what they call ghost signs that remain on old buildings, perhaps not in the greatest shape but with lasting charm and forever memories.
My friend Anita was so inspired by this book that she started taking along a camera and snapping pictures of other ghost signs.  I'm borrowing a few for this blog.  In the book it shows Lynn White, a sign painter who had the skill to paint on the side of … (16 comments)

arkansas: A very interesting SOLD picture on our MLS from old Beebe Arkansas - 12/09/08 04:26 AM

We do a lot of griping about photos of our MLS listings and solds.  Today I sat up straight when I saw this one particular photo come through as sold for $84,000.  There is no identification as to what old department store it may have been but the picture is loud and clear.  I loved the stark clarity of it.

Doing a little investigating, I found this old photo of downtown Beebe Arkansas, a growing city that is about 20 miles from my town of Searcy.  Once while in Beebe not too far back, I went into what I … (52 comments)

arkansas: REO! Older house! Fuse Box! How do you handle this? - 10/29/08 11:49 AM

Another REO property came in for me to go take care of.  It's a 1959 built house with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths.  That's because someone added on in 1979 and added a second bath to what was originally 1.5 baths.
Anyway, to get the power turned on, the power company says have all the breakers in OFF position.  This house has a fuse box!  So what the heck do you do with a fuse box?  Unscrew the fuses?  Surely fuses can't be controlling the central heat and air?  There must be other boxes.
I'm old but not old enough … (10 comments)

arkansas: Bounce this Friendship Ball around the state of Arkansas. - 10/22/08 12:23 AM

Charles Buell sent me this Friendship Ball and I consider it either a true gesture of friendship or another one of his "picking on me" schemes.  I met Charles through Activerain along with lots of other fine folks throughout the country.  Charles, Home Inspector Supreme, has taught me all I'll ever need to know about water heaters and crawl spaces and bugs.  UGH!
Our state of AR (that's Arkansas, not activerain) needs attention so I want to bounce this ball to a couple of AR (remember that's Arkansas, not activerain) members.
David Bolick is in Little Rock, about 50 miles from me, and I've never met … (12 comments)

arkansas: You may need to Early Vote.......and do it early. - 10/21/08 12:29 AM
Monday was to be my big day.  I blogged about it.  I was going to quickly early vote and check on foreclosures that were auctioned at 10:00 am.  I'd be outa there by 10:15 am.  I walked into the lobby and saw a line!  A fairly long line of voters and probably 6 or 8 helpers.  I decided that since I was there I might as well vote as planned and the foreclosure would soon be held in the lobby also.   Wrong!  There were so many early voters the foreclosure was probably held outside.  I couldn't leave my place in line so I … (10 comments)

arkansas: Tonsil clinic held at Pangburn AR school in 1930! Unbelievable story! - 09/10/08 12:20 AM

Have you ever heard of a Tonsil Clinic?  I am not making this up.  It happened in Arkansas and probably other places.  Sixty Pangburn Arkansas students underwent tonsillectomies at their school on Oct 17, 1930!
A most vivid article was published by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Dec. 10, 2000.  It was so vivid that I saved it.  I wish I could publish it but they'd sue me.
The article says,  "The school became a hospital for a couple of days.  Classrooms became operating rooms;  Army cots were brought in; and the auditoriums became the recovery room where (some) patients stayed … (14 comments)

arkansas: One of my first listings and sales. Still pretty and a Searcy old-home classic. - 08/08/08 12:34 AM

This house is back on the market and holds a lot of memories for me.  It sits on Arch Street under a few huge trees and is a Searcy classic.  There is very little yard but you could walk to downtown.  Probably 25 years ago I was fortunate to be chosen as the listing agent for the folks who owned it then.
I shouted with glee when I also sold it.  A minister who wanted to be very close to his church bought it.  It was the time when ministers were beginning to get housing allowances instead of a free parsonage.  It was … (13 comments)

arkansas: What does it mean to live on the wrong side of the tracks? - 08/07/08 12:18 AM

This is the Bald Knob, Arkansas, White County, train depot taken a long time ago.  Bald Knob, in the last few years, obtained a grant and they used it to restore the old depot.  It is used as a museum for train items and it may still be used as a depot too because trains come through Bald Knob all the time.
But back to my question.  You and I have always heard about "the wrong side of the tracks."  She or he lives on the wrong side of the tracks.....and sometimes that was a snub.  At least I always thought it … (17 comments)

arkansas: Self promotion real estate card at year 16 in real estate career. - 07/29/08 12:25 AM

It was the "thing to do" and a good idea to self promote.  All of our motivation seminars said to do it.  I tried several mailouts, one of which was featured a few days ago.  The same friends who'd saved the other one also showed me this one that they'd stuck back.
I put in a sweet sixteen photo even though I always hated the photo.  The style then was to put peroxide on your bangs or front of your hair and bleach it.  A girl friend did it and she looked gorgeous.  I did it and I looked.....well you can see.  The … (19 comments)

arkansas: Loading cotton somewhere around Searcy Arkansas a long time ago - 07/28/08 01:33 AM

This old photo was supplied by my friend Anita and shows the process of loading cotton on a flat bed truck years and years ago.  I assume it is from somewhere around the Searcy AR area.  Sure looks dangerous with that man standing apparently under that cotton bale.
I remember having to pick cotton as a youngster in order to get 15 cents to get in the movie theater in Coolidge GA, the tiny town where I grew up.  The process was to pick the cotton until your long-dragging sack was as full as you could get it.  The growers … (19 comments)

arkansas: Self promotion real estate mailout from 1993. - 07/23/08 06:58 AM

While looking through my old junk, I found this self-promotion advertisement that I mailed out in 1993.  That is the year that I went to work for RE/MAX Advantage.  Well, the truth is my friends found it and showed it me.  They'd saved it because they liked it.
It really is irrelevant that when I began, curly hair styles were "in".  I wore a curly wig until I was sure I liked it and then had the frizzy perm.  I must say it was the easiest hairstyle that I ever had.  Interest rates did shoot up to 18% or above.  … (75 comments)

arkansas: The first jail house in Searcy Arkansas. Looks plush to me. - 07/22/08 12:36 AM

Anita's husband, Robert, has sent me this old photograph of Searcy's first jail.  I looked at it and thought it was a mighty nice structure.  Look at the fancy brickwork and the elaborate work around the door!  It appears to be a nice home with bars.
My next-office neighbor, Jim Baugh, who grew up as a little city kid says indeed it was the jail. The old Searcy jail was just north of Race street, at the NW corner of the Court Square.  It was on the west side of the street, facing east, close to Regions Bank downtown.
According to … (14 comments)

arkansas: Mayfair Hotel in Searcy Arkansas White County - 07/20/08 11:23 AM

This old hotel is still in Searcy AR and still being lived in.  I don't believe it is a hotel anymore but more of a permanent home for people and office space for businesses.  It is within walking distance to our Spring Park, where people used to go for herbal water treatments.
We had a delightful "Yankee" who came in and bought it many years ago. He made himself a very fancy living area in the hotel.  He became loved by everyone in the town despite his accent.  When he sold it to someone else he had quite a few collectibles … (16 comments)

arkansas: Another photo of Searcy AR before streets were paved! - 07/13/08 01:34 AM

This is another picture of Searcy Arkansas White County taken so many years ago.  I love the guy on the light pole who may have climbed up there for the photo.  I would assume photos were a big deal then.  Do you think there were people on the streets for the photo or were there that many loiterers?
This view is of Spruce Street going North or the West side of the court square.
The photo was given to me by a friend whose family owned the daily newspaper.  He remarked that he'd thrown dozens of great … (9 comments)
