artist: Remember black velvet paintings? Here's one. Coolidge GA. Odell Dillard - 06/03/19 06:28 AM

Black Velvet art work
How many remember when drawings or paintings were often done on black velvet paper?  Seems as if I mostly remember them being used to do bull fighting pictures.  I think there may have been lots of ones done in Mexico.  In fact, google pulls this up regarding the paintings. "Ciudad Juárez, Mexico was a center of velvet painting in the 1970s. A displaced Georgia farmboy, Doyle Harden, was the pioneer who created an enormous factory, where velvets were turned out by the thousands by artists sitting in studios. ... Edgar Leeteg has been called "the father of American black velvet kitsch".

artist: A beautiful head adornment....although a surprise and unwanted. - 03/19/17 11:45 AM

I was just visiting with my friend/neighbor and wonderful artist, Phyllis Alexander, and got surprised.
We were talking about her new project of making paper dolls ( a coming blog) so that kids can remember how earlier kids found entertainment.  I did notice and commented on a pretty bird sitting in the door of the cage and trying to interupt my conversation with Phyllis.
All of a sudden the bird left its perch and found a new one....right on the top of my head!  I was stunned and Phyllis was laughing her head off and the bird just sat there.  I leaned over … (8 comments)

artist: Visit from revisiting Searcy AR artist. Puzzle too? What happened to the paintings that were in McDonald's? - 03/29/13 10:57 AM
Arni Anderson, an artist who graduated from Harding University (College at the time) around 1974 and then stayed and taught in the college for a few years before striking out to seek his fame and fortune, is in town.  He stopped by to visit and told me about his latest project.  It is a coloring book with old historic buildings from Searcy's now and past in the book.
But what I remember him for was the paintings in the very first McDonald's restaurant in Searcy AR.  It was located very near Krogers and is now empty but has housed several … (3 comments)

artist: I need the home inspectors to inspect my wood art. Bob Miller bowl gets a hole! - 01/01/11 09:55 AM
Dr. Bob Miller was my dentist....gentle and kind as could be.  I always admired his art work when I had to visit him.  The art work that he zeroed in on was working with wood.  Beautiful wood objects, including turned bowls.  He was honored as he and other artists were invited to display their works at the Searcy Art Gallery.
At the reception, I bought a lovely bowl which was signed by the artist.

While dusting around my bowl today I noticed some strange stuff under it.  It looked like powder.  I looked more closely and found two holes in … (34 comments)

artist: Harding University Art Department creates lovely murals for Searcy Arkansas. - 09/01/10 03:16 AM
My vehicle automatically pulled over and stopped yesterday at the SW corner of Spruce Street on the court house square.  My vehicle almost knows when blog material crops up.  And this time a student, Dave Towell, graphic design major at Harding University, was on the scaffold working on the 4th mural.  The murals are monochomatic and slightly abstracted and lovely. Daniel Adams, art instructor at Harding, is also often found painting on the murals.  In fact, I think Daniel is the leader of the group doing the murals.  If I'm wrong about that, please correct me.

These are the two … (26 comments)

artist: Look at the painting I bought to benefit Searcy Sunshine School. - 10/04/09 12:16 AM
My house is full of old pictures in old frames and realism prevails.
Look what I bought last week.......................................
Why's it still on the floor?
I've gotta find a spot for it in my over-picture-decorated house.
Searcy Sunshine School is a school for exceptional children that was founded back in the 60's by the Searcy Junior Auxiliary.  They're trying to raise money for a new, bigger building.  Our Board of Realtors has contributed several thousand dollars each year by having an auction and giving the proceeds to the School.
One of our fellow Realtors paints and does a darned good job of it. … (14 comments)
