barbara duncan: Free blouses? JC Penney ad. 1972 Searcy AR yearbook. Solve the mystery! - 11/24/23 11:41 AM

Did you read the above ad that was in the 1972 Searcy High School yearbook?  Well, read it again and see if you can believe that J. C.Penney was saying that each Senior girl would get a free blouse.
That was my interpretation.  So I did a little counting.  I looked at the Senior girls and started counting.  I came up with 74 Senior girls and each one of them had on one of the pictured above blouses!  WOW!  That's a lot of free blouses!  Did boys feel left out?  My friends said, "No, Penney's didn't give them all a blouse;  they … (1 comments)

barbara duncan: Advertising paperweight picture. Beebe AR Church. - 11/06/20 06:32 AM

Old advertising method that is new to me.
On ebay right now is this glass paperweight that was a method of advertising that I have not seen before.  The paragraph below is written on ebay regarding the item.  Perhaps someone will know its location and whether it still stands.
This is a vintage, clear glass paperweight featuring a church and probably its pastor, and the writing at the bottom edge reads, 'M.E. Church South Beebe White Co., Ark. Rev. Franklin B. Noe D'. The writing cuts off at the "D" and I can't make out the rest. This is about 4x2&1/2. I don't … (0 comments)

barbara duncan: Handsome young golfers. Searcy AR. 1980. Where are they now? - 11/28/17 05:34 AM

Browsing old newspapers can be so much fun and interesting!  I found this old picture of several handsome young guys who were golfers.  They must have been pretty good and this clipping indicates they were favored to win in an important tournament.  (Wonder if they did?)
I remember them all.  Some are still in Searcy.  Perhaps they will all see this blog and tell us about their lives now!

barbara duncan: White County Court House, Searcy AR, view approx. 1915. - 07/28/16 10:27 AM
This old picture that I found at an antique shop in Keo AR shows our beloved White County Court House as it looked in approximately 1915, as noted on the picture.  It seems relevant to post this picture today because this afternoon in Searcy AR there was a celebration held to note the new improvements to the court square.  Speakers, music, ice cream and lots of enthusiasm were to be shown right around this building.  A big storm blew up and I stayed home but I hope it went well.
The building was built in 1871 and remodeled in 1912, so history … (4 comments)

barbara duncan: James Whitlow, our history friend, stops by. C M Collins Searcy AR photos. - 01/11/16 04:30 AM
My friend James Whitlow, who has contributed so much to this blog, stopped by my office and left some beautiful photos.  The thing that made him give them to me is the name that is on them.  C. M. Collins, Searcy ARK.  This must have been a photographer in Searcy a long long time ago.  Look at the photos and see if you might remember any of the folks or the photography studio.

The last picture has been cut off at the bottom but I see no reason for it to have been different from the others.  Here is a closeup of … (2 comments)

barbara duncan: Beebe AR close-up pictures of long ago. James Whitlow enlarged pictures. - 02/05/13 04:23 AM
We put Beebe Arkansas on this blog a few days ago and this particular photo was placed on the blog.

Our blog friend James Whitlow has the same card and he enlarged some areas.  See them below.

And he included a look at the street more like now, modern Beebe Arkansas!

Here are other Beebe AR blogs if you are interested.

barbara duncan: Day Care Center in Searcy Arkansas in historic home. Year 1987. - 07/29/10 02:16 AM
This blog is a test for Searcy readers as well as a memory trip for me.  During my real estate career I've helped two families obtain property for child care centers and this is one of the results.
It is extremely difficult to get licensed as a day care center.  We had to measure every room.  Dish washers could not be used.  There were so many requirements!  But the two families succeeded in opening the centers.  Both found the job too demanding and both closed after a few years.  I had this one for sale in 1987.
Now the test?  Where … (17 comments)

barbara duncan: Because of a Class 1 fire department, it might be fixable!! Old house, then and now in Searcy Arkansas. - 07/16/10 01:48 AM
A 1989 November real estate advertisement had this picture and these comments.  This house is at the corner of Oak and Vine in Searcy Arkansas.

What a deal!  I guess someone bought it.  This style house was so popular in this area.  They had the high-pitched roof and high ceilings and were often converted to duplexes and rented to students.  They became hard to heat and cool with practically no insulation.  They are thinning out now as my blog shows.
So what has happened to this one?  A drive by surprised me.  Here's what I found.

Someone had changed … (15 comments)

barbara duncan: For sale now with a second floor. In 1989 it was a one-story house! - 07/13/10 03:23 AM
My listing at 1216 Wade is on the market now.  The price is $72,900 and it is a foreclosure property.  The surprise to me was seeing this same house in a Homes for Living magazine put out by the Homes for Living franchise in 1989.  I worked for Powell Realty and saved all the advertising magazines.

Today, the screen is gone from the porch.  The shop had a caved roof and had to be removed.  The garden spot would have to be revived.  It still has the trees.  AND the house grew taller.  Note the second story that has … (7 comments)

barbara duncan: Who remembers El Charro? Searcy Arkansas had a great Mexican food restaurant. - 07/06/10 08:37 AM

Remember this delightful restaurant?  It was probably Searcy's first Mexican food restaurant and I remember it fondly.  However, I'd forgotten how it looked.  I vaguely remembered driving out East Race Street and pulling into the parking lot.  The whole thing is gone now.  I can't remember exactly where it was located.
It had 150 seating capacity and did business in the same location for 17 years.  This picture and history was in a 1981 real estate brochure offering it for sale.  No price was listed and the address was not listed.  In fact, the entire brochure had great pictures but no … (17 comments)

barbara duncan: Punky Caldwell reblogged. C L Coyle and other band members from Searcy Arkansas. - 07/04/10 03:58 PM
We did a blog a short time ago that was a fun blog about long haired music.  A young man who turned out to be Punky Caldwell, quite well know in his day, got noticed and commented on a lot.  His daughter found the blog and sent us additional pictures.
It seems Punky died young but was quite a musician in his day.  Here is a picture of Punky and his band.

Band members were C L Coyle, Coot Brown and Bishop Horten.  They were together in the late 50's and played at "The Silver Moon" outside of Searcy. The … (12 comments)

barbara duncan: A new look for Searcy AR. Mexican restaurant really goes authentic. 301 E Race. - 06/14/10 02:05 PM
Don't you love drive bys when you have to do a double take because of something new?
I do.
And I did.
Driving down East Race Street in Searcy Arkansas I had to look twice because construction of a new kind was going on at the 301 E Race location.  It looked Hispanic or Adobe or something entirely new to our area.

This has been the location of a successful Mexican food restaurant for several years.  It looked this way.  I'm sorry that I had to walk with the Google man to get a picture and this time the picture … (17 comments)

barbara duncan: The evolution of a blue house in Searcy Arkansas.... - 05/29/10 02:12 AM
The evolution of a blue house in Searcy Arkansas, sworn to be the truth by Anita Fuller who spent many happy hours in the house, is repeated in this blog.
First we had the country porch type house.  Anita was a little tot who sat on the front porch looking as if she was looking for a friend. Porch swings were the thing.  A cool front porch, in fact, with a big tree for shade.
Anita had a very active and colorful mother who liked the latest fashions so in the 50's she remodeled the house.  Remember the 50's was a time when you HAD to … (24 comments)

barbara duncan: A Bird for Thanksgiving. This bird is a real turkey.....ugly..... - 11/24/09 11:23 PM
At the St. Augustine Florida alligator farm, they also had a few birds in captivity.  Some were lovely.  Some were noisy.  Some were.....well.....look here.........

My daughter was reading about this poor bird and said it was a stork.  She said the thing hanging in the front is supposed to attract the opposite sex.  She said the reason storks have the reputation of delivering babies is because it looks like they are carrying something in the sack.
