barbara s duncan blogs: Yarnell's Ice Cream. Searcy AR memory. Dip can. Now Turkey Hill. - 04/07/21 09:01 AM

What is this?  Yarnell Ice Cream dip can....now painted. Good memory!
Yarnell's Ice Cream was a Searcy AR favorite.  The ice cream was delicious and the company was in business until a few years ago.  It sold and has recently sold again. This photo was supplied by our Searcy Sleuth Anita Hart Fuller who reported that a friend sent it to her.  The friend bought it at a sale and had it painted to be more attractive and to hold flowers.  The dip can held ice cream in various ice cream parlors and the ice cream was dipped onto a dish or … (3 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: Perfect color coordination in an office at RE/MAX. Anna Layne. - 10/17/17 06:22 AM

A few years ago I made a trip around our RE/MAX Advantage office at 200 W Mulberry Street in Searcy AR.   In 2015 we had all moved into a new building and we all had an office to prepare. Those office pictures are posted on facebook at RE/MAX Advantage Realtors.
Today as I cruised by offices at the office, I did a quick stop!  We have a new person at RE/MAX.  She is    Anna Layne.   She has a Regions Bank mortgage office and has been with us for probably  6  months and she welcomes  mortgage seekers at our location.
Having been an … (2 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: Searcy AR. Another one bites the dust. 405 E Center. - 10/15/17 12:19 PM

Another pile of rubble in Searcy AR and we can say that another one bites the dust.
I know.  Progress.  We grow and grow and things change but it is still sad to drive by a familiar house and say goodbye just before it goes down.  This house in Searcy AR was unique, not elegant, but unique with its different looking arrow shutters.  And look closely at the siding (probably asbestos) and it has a curvy looking edge.  Trees shaded it nicely and it was close to downtown Searcy so the occupants since 1950 when it was built (so says the courthouse … (2 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: The Pit Drive In, Searcy AR, remembered once again. - 07/26/17 10:35 AM

The Pit Drive In, Searcy AR, 1961.  How Searcy did love The Pit.  Several blogs have been written about it and here's another picture from a 1961 yearbook showing the girls (remember they couldn't wear pants to school) who probably went out to get their advertisement for the The Lion yearbook and got treats at the same time.
Evidently, plaids were in!  Short hair, below the knee skirts, flats for school and sweaters.  One girl has on socks!  Perhaps she was a fashion leader!
The Pit blog 1967.

barbara s duncan blogs: My blog on activerain pays off! Flowers and candy! WOW! - 06/06/16 05:31 AM

Isn't this flower arrangement lovely!  And candy accompanied it today when it arrived at my office.
The receptionist asked me to come to the front because something had arrived for me.  I was aghast when I read who it was from and why!
Here's the story.  Some folks are good at commenting on my blog and some are mentioned often in the blog because they might be good copy and interesting!  We know that to find someone now you just "google" them and they may pop up.  Activerain does a great job of putting our blogs out there for the search engines.  For … (5 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: Help! Historical Society and Pioneer Village need storage space! - 12/15/15 09:33 PM

If you have not been to an open house at Pioneer Village in Searcy AR, you must plan to go.  The village, put together by the Historical Society, has loads of great items. (Look at that old lawn mower in the front yard of this house.)  This picture dates back to 2011 when I snapped it and they have added so many other things to the village.
They have a problem right now.  They need storage space.  The building that has held their treasures (to them and to those who appreciate history) is being prepared for another purpose and they asked me … (4 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: Remembering big hogs in a small town. Heard's Sausage. Searcy AR - 08/16/15 11:34 PM
Way back in the 60's Searcy AR had no playground equipment for parents to take kids to play on.
They could drive a distance and visit  a swimming hole called, if I remember right, The Bluff Hole, in Letona AR.  And there were probably some fishing holes where the kids could sit on the bank and throw a fishing pole in.  When my kids visited the city to see grandparents, the grandparents worked hard to try to find entertainment for the children. At times the kids were somewhat critical of the size of the fish.

One of their favorite places to visit was … (7 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: REALTORS helping out. Searcy AR. Who, what, where, when, why. ? - 07/02/15 10:20 PM

It is not that I can't remember all these folks.  It is because film technology was not as easy back then and the picture is not so clear.  Larry DeGroat (who can forget him?) is on the left and he is the one who shared this picture.  He also was instrumental in getting the Searcy Board of REALTORS to visit this home and help get it painted and prettied for the people who lived there and could not afford to do it themselves.
Here is another one.
We were tired and hungry after working all morning.  I need help from my real estate … (0 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: W Pleasure St Searcy AR changes again. Another house going down. - 02/13/15 11:07 PM
Some houses really do just get worn out.  Like humans.  There is just no way to make them live longer. That's the case with this 611 West Pleasure house on the corner of Pleasure and Pecan Streets and just across the street from the location of the popular-at-one-time Gentry's Grocery.
It has been bought and is being readied for the big bash that will take it away forever.  It had a tarped roof and I am sure that the inside was in bad shape.  But it still deserves one final tribute on this blog.
There are houses like it still in … (7 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: 1948 Ramsey Printing Co Searcy AR Phone 170 - 01/31/15 10:33 PM
This is a page from an old note pad that was probably given away to customers of this printing firm in Searcy AR around 1948.
The strange thing is I have never heard of Ramsey Printing Co but that is not important since I am a newcomer to Searcy AR.  And there is no 601 N 8th Street in Searcy AR today.  This is a definite case for the Searcy Sleuths.  Anita should be able to check her ancient phone book for the number 170.  Don will figure out what happened to 8th Street and find the history of the whole … (5 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: Old hospital. Another picture found as follow up. - 01/10/15 05:15 AM

This blog is a lot of fun.  I put up an old picture of a hospital a few days ago and some of the Searcy Sleuths knew where it was and had actually visited there.  They called it the MOPAC hospital that was sponsored by the MOPAC railroad.  I dug down further and came up with this picture which appears to be the same property and perhaps on the same day.
On the back of this one is written "the tow bldg is nurses quarters next high bldg is Col Scott house the tall bldg is city hosp."  I'm … (0 comments)

barbara s duncan blogs: Hospital with parking lot that is not crowded. - 01/07/15 08:34 AM

Back of the picture says "hospital" and that is all.  Looks sad and depressing to me and makes me wonder how far it was to walk to the hospital from what must have been the parking lot.  The sign says "Visitors park and enter here."
Someone will know what this vehicle is and what the model was.  The license plate has a readable number but no state identification that is readable.  Perhaps a reader may know where this hospital was.  You have to admit it is an interesting picture from a long time ago.

barbara s duncan blogs: One of my favorite history houses sells again. 501 E Race, Searcy Arkansas - 04/06/10 12:55 AM
The newspaper reported that 501 East Race is going to become the home of White County Children's Safety Center, an organization in its second year of operation of supporting children who may be victims of child abuse or neglect.
The house was built in 1929.  The original owner died in approximately 2003 and I had the house listed when it sold the first time.  I always loved the house.  It was so charming with an oozy brick exterior.  Look at this brickwork.  There is probably a real name for this brick work but I can't remember it.  What's wrong with "oozy?"

barbara s duncan blogs: It seemed like a good idea at the time, says my daughter, who printed out all 763 of my blogs for Christmas. - 12/26/09 12:36 PM
My daughter came home for Christmas and lugged into the house a large plastic storage bin filled with three-ring binders.  She was vague when I asked what it was, but later, after we opened presents she dragged it into the kitchen and said, "I have one more gift for you."
"I thought it would be nice to print out all of your blogs," she said, handing me a neatly organized binder. "Here are all the blogs from 2007."
"The rest," she said, dragging six more binders across the floor, "are from 2008 and 2009 and I thought I'd never get through it."
Turns … (43 comments)
