barbara s duncan real estate: Mayfair Hotel Searcy AR then and now - 01/25/09 11:12 PM
The old Mayfair Hotel in Searcy Arkansas was majestic.  It was near a park that had healing spring water, a railroad dropped people off close-by and it was a popular hotel.

This old postcard shows how great it was.  I drove by today and snapped a present day shot of it from the front and from the back.  The back view shows how big it is and was.  Trees have grown so big it is hard to get a shot of the entire front.  Wouldn't you hate to have to go around this whole building painting those exposed rafters?

barbara s duncan real estate: Facebook. Surprise! - 01/21/09 11:34 AM
I was just asittin' there playing in the rain when an email popped up.
It said that Johnny S______ wanted to be my friend on Facebook.
Oh, yes!!   That's Johnny from way back when I taught school and he stayed at my house a lot and was best friends with my son and I hadn't heard from him in about 12 years.
So I'm clicking to say I'll be his friend.
What's that pop up thing?   It is saying something like, "Barbara Anne......?"
There's a little cursor thing at the bottom of the pop up that seems to be winking at … (42 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Anything can be funny when you are showing houses. - 01/17/09 01:31 PM
We've got people shopping again!!
I was showing a house today to people who have bought from me before and let me sell their house before.  You know, those people that you absolutely love!!
They referred a relative to me and we were looking at a house for the third time.  My past clients were to look and give their opinion.  They were all in the dining room and started laughing.
Upon asking them what was so funny, they pointed to the dining room table which had a big zigzaw puzzle laid out on it.  One of them said, "Wouldn't it … (28 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: White County woodartists exhibit at Searcy Art Gallery - 01/16/09 11:42 AM
I blogged about the very creative invitation that I received to the Preview Party of woodartists Tim Hogan, Robert Miller, Sheila Skinner and Paul Pitt.
I attended the event last night, Thursday January 15, 2009.  The artists had brought out lots of their works for exhibit or purchase.  I snapped a few pictures to share on activerain.
This first picture shows work by Paul Pitt who is a professor at Harding University and does magnificent clay products and carved flutes.  His picture is shown on the table in a frame.  When I attended Harding University he was my ceramics' teacher.  … (11 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: What good is blogging anyhow? - 01/15/09 02:19 AM
The other day I didn't write a blog and I actually felt guilty.  That's a strange feeling to have just because you didn't write a blog.  So I started wondering why I do any blogging in the first place.
My website already pulled up on the first page of Google.  My business was doing fine.  So when I started blogging over a year ago, I had no idea what I was getting into.  I had to learn.  I had to meet people.  I found people on the activerain blogsite that I really liked and hope to meet even more.
Looking back … (37 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Relocation completed! Skunk has new home! - 01/13/09 12:25 PM

Perhaps you get tired of hearing about skunks and possums and how many we have around my house due to our being too free with food and because my Raven-eating cat has cat food on the porch which she'll share if she has a juicy crow or bird to eat.
But here's another success story.  We had a heck of a time catching this one.  He absolutely played with our minds.  He was so beautiful with the white and black stripes.  As I saw him flaunting his beauty I wondered why no one has ever had a skunk-fur coat.....probably not even Cruella De … (41 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Invitation to Searcy Art Gallery woodartists Preview Party. - 01/11/09 12:49 PM

I received a box in the mail.  It was a neat little white box that was easy to open.
When I opened it it was filled with sawdust and a small card lay on top of the sawdust.
What is this?  Did they forget to put the object in?  Is this a joke?  Where's my gift????
Then I read it.  It was an invitation to attend the preview of our White County wood artists's exhibit.  They put out a lot of wood shavings!  It is to be Thursday January 15 at the Searcy Art Gallery.
BRILLIANT!  The invitation went from … (17 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Interest Rate? Are they really the indicator of a bad real estate market? - 01/08/09 09:31 AM
My friend Larry DeGroat, who can do miracles with a computer, just posted this and I think it is good enough to reblog.

With the endless negativity of the news media, I was curious on how the interest rates really did fair for the past several years.  The media goes on and on about how bad the real estate market is and that is why the interest rates are so low.  I was giving this some thought and remembered that I was closing deals several years ago with low interest rates.
In my market, the local lenders e-mail me the interest … (6 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: The dogs used to live outside and have their own dog houses! - 01/07/09 07:55 PM
Growing up in South Georgia I remember my parents gathering around the radio on Saturday night for the Grand Ole Opry.  They loved country songs and the country songs were so funny! If a man's wife was mad at him he was "in the dog house"
Driving around Searcy Arkansas recently, I heard a song that they had really enjoyed back then.
It was called "Move it on Over".  Hank Williams Sr. was the singer.  He recorded it in 1947.
The song laments that the wife "had warned him once and warned him twice but he wouldn't take no woman's advice.  So when … (26 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Mother Nature, you got your states mixed up! Ice on my shrubs???? - 01/05/09 11:22 PM

Dear Mother Nature,
This is Arkansas.  A-R-K-A-N-S-A-S.  You know.  We're the state that you usually give a sprinkling of snow once a year and maybe a little ice occasionally just to keep us on our toes.  You probably even chuckle when one of us slips on the ice and takes a spill.
But this is January.  The roads were clear and I looked outside my window and found these icicles on the shrubs.  So, Mother Nature, you surely dropped these things mistakenly in our fair state when you were on your way to New York or Illinois or Montana or … (28 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Anne of the Thousand Days, a great NetFlix movie to rent. 1969 Richard Burton! - 01/04/09 11:12 PM
I don't twitter yet and I am barely enrolled in facebook but if someone had asked me the question last night "What are you doing right now?" I'd have ignored or not heard.
I was absolutely engrossed with the movie, Anne of the Thousand Days, which starred Richard Burton.  Says Netflix:
When King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) decides to divorce his first wife, Katherine of Aragon (Irene Papas), and marry Anne Boleyn (Genevieve Bujold), he ignites religious and political drama stretching from London to Rome. This acclaimed film (which won an Oscar for Costume Design) focuses on the woman at the center … (19 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Activerain, can you tell me if Nutsy is really real? - 12/24/08 07:46 AM
Dear Gods of Activerain,
I am getting a little old.
Some of my old friends tell me there is no Nutsy.
Please tell me the truth.  Is there a real Nutsy?
Sincerely,
Ms. Barbara

THE ANSWER.

Ms. Barbara, your old friends are wrong!  They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age.
They can't even believe what they see.  Not believe in Nutsy?  You may as well not believe in Santa Claus or the or fairies.  You may as well not believe that images can go across the nation instantly and that sound reaches around the world … (48 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: It's a topsy turvy world when you're 16 years old!! - 12/19/08 11:30 AM

This young man just turned 16!!
He has had a red truck for about two years just waiting for him to be old enough to drive it by himself.  The legal driving age in Arkansas is 16.
His parents agreed to keep him off the roads until he was of age legally.  On his birthday he was up bright and early and eager to get to school early and find a parking space.
Then it iced over!!  Mean old Mother Nature delayed his getting out and trying his wheels.
Since he's a favorite of mine, I called on … (13 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: I believe Obama read my blog about public works!! Thanks, Mr. President! - 12/07/08 01:41 AM
Did you see the papers?  Did you read or listen to the news?
Our new President Obama says he's going to have a huge increase in public works!!  Provide jobs for people!!
He said there will be investments of record amounts for our vast infrastructure program which would include work on schools, sewer systems, mass transit, electric grids, dams and other public utilities.
He will upgrade computers in schools, expand broadband internet access, make government buildings more energy efficient and improve information technology at hospitals and doctor's offices.
This announcement comes immediately after I printed my old Civilian Conservation Corps discharge paper … (10 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: Civilian Conservation Corps 1941 Honorable Discharge. CCC. Will we need this again? - 12/03/08 10:51 AM
While looking through old things I found this aged copy of a discharge from the Civilian Conservation Corps  a part of the plan to employ young people during the Great Depression.  With our country facing such danger right now, it seems appropriate to perhaps display this.
It goes back to a time when the forms were typed in with an old typewriter or written in ink.  This young man was transported from Georgia to California at the age of 17.  What a journey and what an adventure.  Read about the Corps at Wikipedia.  And pray that we never have to go through … (13 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: West Race Baptist Church hosts a free Thanksgiving Meal each year! - 11/22/08 09:56 AM

All along the streets of Searcy Arkansas, White County are signs inviting people to a free Thanksgiving Meal at the church on West Race Avenue.  Several dedicated church members started this free meal several years ago.
It has grown and grown.  The meals will be delivered to folks who can't get out to come to the church.  At the church, turkey and dressing and all the things that should accompany it will be served.
I think it is one of the best things that can be done at this time of year and I applaud them for it.  I'm posting … (4 comments)

barbara s duncan real estate: No, I will not go to jail for your favorite charity. - 11/17/08 11:42 AM
I thought this stuff about going to jail and making your friends bail you out was over!  It seemed to be the rage a few years back but I personally haven't heard anything about it for awhile. Today, however, during my lunch this voice called me saying someone had turned in my name and I'd be picked up to be carried off to somewhere for this particular charity.   I heard words like for MSD or something and finally I said I'm not going to do it and wasn't interested.  I was still a bit confused and didn't put it all together.  I just knew it … (34 comments)
