broker: Dr. James Bales. Harding Bible Professor a few years back. - 08/12/15 11:56 PM

Dr. James D Bales was a dapper figure around Searcy AR back in the days when Harding University was Harding College.  He lived on Race Street in Searcy within walking distance to his job at Harding.  He was a Professor of Bible and theology from 1944 to 1980 and can be found on wikipedia which is quite an accomplishment.  The article is somewhat controversial but tells a lot about him.
My memory of him is seeing him hastening across campus with the HIGHEST head of hair with deep waves carefully controlled.  My husband's memory is of his quickly coming out of his … (5 comments)

broker: 1950. Ladies from Searcy AR in evening gowns. Ann Lacy included. - 08/04/14 07:20 AM

This picture has a date of May 3 1950.  It shows several Searcy ladies posed in their evening dresses for a picture of some kind.  Perhaps the Searcy Sleuths will recognize the location of the gathering.  The first girl on the left, front row, is Ann Lacy.  I remember her.  She was a gentle and kind teacher in the Searcy Schools.  She died May 20, 2010 and her obit said
"she was greatly involved with the Daughters of the American Revolution, her church, First Presbyterian Church of Searcy, and her love and passion for teaching elementary school."
Searcy Sleuths may … (7 comments)

broker: Sweet Anthem Chamber 3220 Searcy AR? What does this mean? - 06/25/12 03:39 AM
A blog reader sent me this picture of a tombstone that he found in the cemetery in Searcy AR and asked if I knew what the Sweet Anthem Chamber 3220 meant.
"Also, I've got a picture of this headstone from the cemetery on East Moore St. I was wondering what "Sweet Anthem Chamber" was. Sounds kind of creepy, but it is in a cemetery. Many thanks,"  so the email read.
I told him the Seary Super Sleuths could probably tell us what it meant....or means....
Here's the picture.

broker: Worth repeating. Violin students from Searcy AR in the 50's. - 04/15/12 02:54 AM

Most of us in the 50's were doing rock and roll, weren't we?
But some were more cultured!  I love this picture made in Searcy Arkansas First Methodist Church (I think) and definitely featuring Super Sleuth Anita third from left on the front row.
Some of them I recognize but some I don't.  They need to be recognized.  And perhaps we need to know why some of them are NOT holding violins but are definitely all dressed up!

broker: You need to join the White County Historical Society. White County Mounted Patrol. - 01/26/12 06:52 AM
Why join the White County Historical Society?  Many reasons but the main one could be to get their newsletter that is sent monthly....with pictures!  They have given me permission to use their pictures on this blog so I am going to share this one with you. It was in the current issue and I have never seen it before.  Look at all these handsome guys of the White County Mounted Patrol.

Now that you see overall, I'm going to show you up close ones.

Now for the names if you are curious.

broker: Have you always wanted an old house with charm, wood floors, and a big yard with pecan trees? - 01/28/11 01:15 PM
If you drool when you drive by Victorian homes, look at this one.  It is a HUD foreclosure property in the little town of Bald Knob.  The courthouse says it was built in 1947 but I don't believe that.  An old-timer in Bald Knob says it dates back to the 20's, he thinks.  The storage building in the back yard, he says, was an old dairy barn.

It has the charm of hardwood floors, tall windows, a bay room that would be excellent for piano playing space.  Definitely, it takes us back to another era.  Note the pecan tree!!  … (17 comments)

broker: Another landmark going down. More progress in Searcy Arkansas. - 12/23/10 03:47 AM
Rumor had it that the square corner of Sawmill Road and Country Club Road East in Searcy Arkansas had been sold for a HUGE amount of money.
What's a square corner?  Well, I've heard that they go back so far that when roads were being made the old farmer would say, "You aint going through my pasture but you can go around the edge of it."  Thus the corner could be sharp and square.  In Arkansas we still have quite a few of them.
On this square corner was an old horse and his barn.  I watched him for years as I made … (25 comments)
