coolidge ga: 25" waist? What happened to it? 1949 movie On The Town. - 11/09/19 07:34 AM

25" waist?
Turner Classic Movies has become a favorite place for me to go after a tiring day in the real estate world.  One that I am watching now is "On the Town" which was done in 1949.  It's a musical and the female stars had short hair and longer dresses.  All of a sudden the star above came out with what had to be a 25" waistline.

And then, all of another sudden, I remembered the Home Ec class that all the girls in the tiny school that I attended were taught sewing, cooking, and all things feminine.  The teacher stressed that … (12 comments)

coolidge ga: Remember black velvet paintings? Here's one. Coolidge GA. Odell Dillard - 06/03/19 06:28 AM

Black Velvet art work
How many remember when drawings or paintings were often done on black velvet paper?  Seems as if I mostly remember them being used to do bull fighting pictures.  I think there may have been lots of ones done in Mexico.  In fact, google pulls this up regarding the paintings. "Ciudad Juárez, Mexico was a center of velvet painting in the 1970s. A displaced Georgia farmboy, Doyle Harden, was the pioneer who created an enormous factory, where velvets were turned out by the thousands by artists sitting in studios. ... Edgar Leeteg has been called "the father of American black velvet kitsch".

coolidge ga: Amazing things about old pictures. Old photograph made in Georgia. - 05/27/12 11:14 PM
I love old pictures.  Way back then, having your picture taken was something rare unless you were rich and I was not and knew no one who was.
This picture below is actually only 3" x 4" in real size but the scanner makes it big and easy to see.
It shows the way clothes were hung out to dry.
It shows how one squinted into the sun when looking at the camera.
It shows an old barn in the background, appearing closer than it really was so depth in photographs was deceptive.
It shows the simplicity of old toys....just a … (22 comments)

coolidge ga: What I learn from my Activerain friends and blog readers. Free visit to Coolidge GA. - 05/30/11 04:54 AM
One of my new-found blog friends who grew up in Searcy Arkansas read a comment from me that said I was raised in Coolidge Georgia so therefore I didn't know everything and everybody who used to live in Searcy.
I found something in the mail a few days later.  Jim Bohannon, who grew up in Searcy, had send me a 1920's map of Coolidge Georgia.  He very tactfully suggested that I was surely not around in 1920 but most little towns changed very little from year to year.
I studied that map and my memories came flowing back.  I decided to see if … (11 comments)

coolidge ga: Loading cotton somewhere around Searcy Arkansas a long time ago - 07/28/08 01:33 AM

This old photo was supplied by my friend Anita and shows the process of loading cotton on a flat bed truck years and years ago.  I assume it is from somewhere around the Searcy AR area.  Sure looks dangerous with that man standing apparently under that cotton bale.
I remember having to pick cotton as a youngster in order to get 15 cents to get in the movie theater in Coolidge GA, the tiny town where I grew up.  The process was to pick the cotton until your long-dragging sack was as full as you could get it.  The growers … (19 comments)
