daily citizen: Remember newspapers? I do. I love them. Searcy AR had one. Picture! - 10/02/23 11:27 AM

Searcy Daily Citizen 1929
Newspapers seem to be passing away.  We can now go to the computer in order to read the newspaper.  Many people don't have computer knowledge or own a computer.  Prices for the newspaper has gone higher so lots of people have dropped their subscription.  I plan to continue reading a newspaper each day if I can afford to do so.  I love and respect newspapers and the folks who make it happen.  I treasure the clipped photos of family members that I saved through the years.
Above is a 1929 photograph of a newspaper newsroom.  Looks kinda messy, doesn't … (8 comments)

daily citizen: The Good Ole Days. Early voting 2004. No Covid-19. No masks. - 10/26/20 11:19 AM

Found!  An old newspaper clipping of early voting.
I stumbled upon this old clipping.  Don't we all clip family pictures from the newspaper?  How this one ended up on the front page of the local newspaper is a mystery BUT it means so much right now.  It makes us think of the good old days.....no masks......no safe distancing.....just stand in line to early vote.
Another sad change from 2004 to 2020 is the demise of so many newspapers.  This one, The Daily Citizen, used to be delivered almost daily.  Now it is delivered three times a week by the US Post Ofice.  It … (4 comments)

daily citizen: Searcy AR 1980 ad. How things change. Arch St downtown. - 02/06/20 10:07 AM

Downtown Searcy 1980
It  interesting to see this old ad that was in the Searcy Daily Citizen on 4/25/1980.  Davis Furniture now has a new owner and name, Young's Tire is no longer at that location.  The Commercial Printing Company is not there, vehicles have certainly changed and this picture makes the street appear shorter than it really is.  The Methodist Church is still highly visible in the background.
BUT......Searcy AR does still have CLASS

daily citizen: Judsonia mansion. Henson house. Survived Judsonia tornado. - 07/26/19 12:10 PM

Remember how much we LOVE the mansion in Judsonia that survived the Judsonia tornado in 1952?
Look what we have found.  This picture was in a White County Centennial Edition of The Daily Citizen and White County Citizen that was published in Searcy in August 1936!  It shows the mansion long before the tornado and shows all the beauty with trees and shrubs and flowers all around.  Streets were probably not paved but there appears to be a curb and sidewalk around the corner.  My friend, Letain DeVore, gave me this great old 16 page bit of history because she knew I'd … (4 comments)

daily citizen: Girls, girls. Familiar faces but no names. Searcy AR 1981 musical. - 10/24/16 04:49 AM

Imagine!  A nice picture like this one with no identification for the future......and the future is now!
This picture was found in an old Searcy Daily Citizen and I know these faces but can't recall all the names.  Please send it around and see if we can identify each of them.  They were to be in a 50's rock-style musical presented by First United Methodist Church in Searcy AR.  That would have been March 22, 1981.
I think they made another mistake by naming the director Barbara Joner.  It would have been Barbara Jones.....
Also, am I seeing one boy in the group?  It … (11 comments)

daily citizen: It was a snow day in old Searcy Arkansas. Stott's Drug Store. Citizen Publishing. - 04/24/11 02:22 PM
It may not have been the same day..
But then...it could have been the same day..
SNOW excites people in the town of Searcy Arkansas.  It did then and it does now.
These two pictures seem to go together.  I feel as if someone was running around town taking pictures of the snow.  They gathered lots of folks in front of Stott's Drug Store.

In fact, they may have gathered up everyone at this store and left the Citizen Publishing Office, just down the street, empty.  Note Sowell's Furniture.  You Searcy Sleuths will have to name the other stores from … (18 comments)

daily citizen: Local news in Searcy Arkansas 1980. This was the society column from the Daily Citizen. - 09/10/09 01:47 PM
A couple of days ago I put the hospital news from March 18 1980 in my blog.
It was a regular part of the Searcy Daily News and highly read.
*************
Today I think it's fun to put up another feature.
This one is the society news column that was written by Helen Bauer for many years.
Lots of people laughed even then about how it was totally unimportant if a person went shopping in Little Rock or a kid came home from college to visit.
Reading through this brings back smiles and memories.  I still know a lot of these … (8 comments)

daily citizen: That coulda been me! Full-service gas station takes big hit. - 01/26/09 11:33 PM
A few months ago I wrote about one of remaining two full-service filling stations in Searcy Arkansas.  I confessed that it is my one luxury that I will not give up until they are gone.  I sit in my car and they pamper me by cleaning my windshield, checking my tires, and whatever else I request.
Yesterday my favorite filling station took a direct hit as this picture from the Daily Citizen shows.
The entire article is found at the Daily Citizen on page 1 of the newspaper.
The truck driven by a Duncan (no relation) came crashing over the curb, … (21 comments)

daily citizen: First bank robbery in 15 years in Searcy AR - 03/27/08 02:42 PM
Our town had a little excitement Monday afternoon as one of our branch banks called in to report they'd been robbed.  We have gained a LOT of branch banks in Searcy and some are in quiet areas where a robber would likely not be seen except by the bank employees.
The robber had his head pretty well covered but was captured on cameras.  It showed him entering with his face covered by a yellowish bandana and going directly behind the counter to the teller.  He brandished a gun during the robbery and left out the front door after getting the money, … (4 comments)
