historic ads: Truman Baker sign. Searcy AR. Old historic sign. - 06/13/19 12:13 PM

Truman Baker Sign
At first, all you see in this sign is a car license plate saying Truman Baker.  It is pretty historic because Truman Baker has been gone a long time and so has the Truman Baker car dealership in Searcy AR.  Their best location, in case you are new to Searcy, was where Walgreen's is now.  Right there on that corner of Race and Main for years and years.
This sign, however, is quite creative when you think about it.  Look at the second line, Race Street.  It has speed lines on it and is printed in italics which makes it … (0 comments)

historic ads: RE/MAX looking back. Found in treasure box! Statistics. Searcy AR ad - 03/05/19 08:09 AM

Look at this old advertisement that I put out in 1993!
It was found amidst other treasures sent to my daughter from someone who discovered it and thought she might like to have it.  I LOVE IT!  Note there was no cell phone in this ad but there was a pager number.  Pagers are gone.  Home phones are almost all gone.  And I still work for RE/MAX.  And as Willie Nelson says, "I woke up still not dead again today."
Perhaps it needs an update.  Here goes.
2018 -    Interest rates are around 4.25%.  Average sales price of a home in 2018 … (7 comments)

historic ads: Rendezvous. Hard to spell! Great restaurant. Searcy AR. - 03/02/19 05:03 AM

The Rendezvous Cafe
Who would have believed that the old give-away match book covers from years ago when almost everyone smoked would be somewhat collectible today?  Well, evidently they are.  This one from Searcy AR's beloved Rendezvous Cafe is now on ebay with a sales price of $4.99.  It is historic in giving its phone number of 223 and saying it had 24 years of service already!
So what year might this have been?  It was probably before we had the abbreviation AR for Arkansas instead of ARK.  Zip codes started in the early 1960's.   The old Rendezvous building is still there  but … (6 comments)

historic ads: Rialto Theater Searcy AR 1960 ad in yearbook Searcy High School - 09/05/17 12:05 PM

The Rialto Theater in Searcy AR
We have seen so many pictures of the Rialto!  We have it stored as a beloved memory!  We love that it has been restored to what it was when we were growing up.  So since we never get tired of the Rialto, here's another picture.  This comes from the advertisements in the 1960 Searcy High School yearbook on page165.  Names are there and perhaps someone can say whether the ones in the picture paid for the ad or whether the group was for seniors.  It is unusual in that it does not show the Rialto but … (9 comments)

historic ads: Mail out 1993. New RE/MAX agent. Searcy AR. How things change! - 07/02/17 01:41 PM

Time does fly when you are having fun!
I found this old 1993 mailout that I did when I became an "Above the Crowd!" RE/MAX agent.  I think it showed a lot of history.  Note how it was when I began in 1979.  Curlies and double knits were in and interest rates shot up to 17% and above.  In 1993 the interest rates were as low as 6.95%!
What about now?  Who would have thought interest rates would be between 3% and 4%?  Who would have thought that most of the shopping for houses would be on the internet?    Who would … (6 comments)

historic ads: Whaddya do with an 1899 newspaper? Searcy Daily Citizen, AR.? - 09/04/16 03:13 AM

Whaddya do if you find an 1899 newspaper that has been in hiding for over 100 years and is in bad condition but still readable if you hold it delicately?  I found this one and I am showing you the date on it.  March 3 (the three is turned wrong but my keyboard does not allow me to do that).  This must go back to the days when an individual placed each word or letter by hand.

Here's a closeup so that you can see it is from our favorite city, Searcy AR.  You can read some of the stories and one … (7 comments)

historic ads: 1948 Ramsey Printing Co Searcy AR Phone 170 - 01/31/15 10:33 PM
This is a page from an old note pad that was probably given away to customers of this printing firm in Searcy AR around 1948.
The strange thing is I have never heard of Ramsey Printing Co but that is not important since I am a newcomer to Searcy AR.  And there is no 601 N 8th Street in Searcy AR today.  This is a definite case for the Searcy Sleuths.  Anita should be able to check her ancient phone book for the number 170.  Don will figure out what happened to 8th Street and find the history of the whole … (5 comments)

historic ads: High School yearbooks. Treasures from the past. Now changed? - 01/18/15 09:21 PM

Did you realize that old year books are becoming treasures?
Go to ebay and check them out.  Folks want a lot of money for the historic books.  Of course, since I have not been teaching school or keeping up with anyone in school since 1985 I am not current on what they cost now if they are still published. I did browse one from somewhere around 1990 and was surprised to see that the back part of the book where the yearbook staff always sold ads and where we now find lots of historic photos of the area was filled … (4 comments)

historic ads: Headlee's Drug Company, Grand Theatre, Smith-Davis Mercantile, Searcy AR old businesses - 11/15/12 01:40 AM
Ok, more ads!
These are from the old Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book that I discovered.  It was in terrible condition and is in worse now because I tore out the ads for scanning.  The cook book is for Searcy Arkansas and dates back to the 20's we think.

Head in at Headlee's!  I came here while Headlee's was still operating.  I understand it may have changed corners.  It was beside Van Atkins when I arrived.  It was the gathering place for all the people who liked to visit and find out what was going on in the town.

historic ads: Did barber's give baths? Leslie's Barber Shop and Baths. Searcy AR. Patterson Cleaning Company - 11/11/12 06:28 AM
Here are two more ads from the old Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book that must date back to around the 20's.
I actually remember Patterson Cleaners.  They operated up until not too many years ago.  (How's that for an indefinite date?)
I like the way they said they return everything but the dirt.  I guess that means no buttons missing?
Leslie's Barber Shop and Baths is more intriguing.  They mention baths.  Did you go to the barber shop for a bath back then?  And I assumed that it was a men's shop but they say they specialize in ladies' and children's … (14 comments)

historic ads: A. B. Coffman,W.L. Ragsdale,Searcy Arkansas business owners a long time ago. - 10/12/12 12:44 AM

Here are two more ads from the Women's Missionary Society Cook Book that we think may date back to the 20's in Searcy Arkansas.
Read about the handmade clothes.  What's a bushelman?  What is Glover continuous flow?
At least we have the location of one of the businesses.  600 South Spring Street, Searcy AR.  I tried to find what is at 600 S Spring now and was unsuccessful.  Don can do it!
Just for Ms Debbie, I left a recipe on the page.  That is the entire recipe, not just a part of it.  Sounds pretty easy.
