postcards: Hotel Adrian Heber Springs AR Fireproof Built 1908 Gone by 1916 - 01/31/24 11:30 AM
Old Old Hotel.  Fireproof

Hotel Adrian, Heber Springs, Ark. Did you ever hear of it?
Neither had I but here's an old postcard that seems to prove that there was one.  Let's read what the nearly worn-out card says.  The first picture shows the building and two rooms inside with this written on it.  "Hotel Adrian, Heber Springs, Ark.  New, fireproof building.  Hot and cold running water, suites with bath, steam heat, and all modern up-to-date conveniences.  For any information address T. V. Metzger."
The back of the card reads "Heber Springs, Ark, is famous throughout the whole country for its medicinal waters … (5 comments)

postcards: Methodist Episcopal Church, Searcy AR, postcard. Fences. When? - 03/21/23 11:02 AM

Methodist Episcopal Church!  Was there a split?
I think we have run this picture before but the card appeared on ebay for sale and I took the picture again.  I could read, this time, the fine print where it says Methodist Episcopal Church.  I had never noticed that before.  So, Searcy Methodist Sleuths, did the church go separate directions?  Did the beautiful Episcopal church in Searcy break away from the Methodist?  Go here https://activerain.com/droplet/dBqb to the older blog that has a much larger picture of the church!  I do love the larger picture!  Could some of the lines across it be electric … (3 comments)

postcards: Remember Ben Franklin, parking meters, and old Searcy AR from 50's. - 08/04/21 07:48 AM

Remember Ben Franklin?
This old postcard on ebay brings back memories.  There in the middle of the block stands the Ben Franklin store and then somewhere around the block was the Sterling's store.  Were they both what we called "Dime" stores back then?   I believe the store to the left of Ben Franklin's was a shoe store and there's Security Bank on the corner.  Cars were colorful then vs. ones today.
The old parking meters do bring back memories.  Wasn't there a job for a person to go around and mark how long a vehicle had been parked?  You could get a ticket!
Now … (5 comments)

postcards: Very very old picture of Searcy Arkansas. You'd not recognize it! - 07/30/08 12:12 AM

My friend Don sent this old postcard photo of Searcy and gives the following explanation of this Searcy Arkansas, White County picture.  Thanks Don.  It is a REAL oldie.

1911 May Day ParadeIf you can't read that faint caption, it tells us that those were public school children marching, and that this was taken on Spring Street, looking north toward the Court House. The court house dome can just be seen through the utility pole cross bars. The building on the left should be the Gill House built in 1882 and later replaced with the  Mayfair Hotel in the early … (12 comments)

postcards: Morning Sun, Searcy AR, a place that is rapidly changing - 05/22/08 03:28 AM

Look what I've found this time.  This is a postcard of Morning Sun, Searcy AR.  It is a newspaper copy and not a great picture but who would have thought there'd be one at all?
Morning Sun reminds me of one of our real estate friends who said as a young man he worked at the filling station there for some super salesman.  He was trained to go out and say, "Fill er up?"  Then he'd do the service on the car.  They apparently also had a snack bar.  He was to make a milk shake and … (5 comments)

postcards: Old picture postcard showing Arch Street in Searcy Ark 1912 - 05/15/08 12:28 AM

I have a permanent search on ebay for certain collectibles or memorabilia and one of the searches I have is for Searcy AR, my home town.  The fun thing is ebay will email you any new items for that search.  No looking every night or wondering if you've missed something.  This card is one that I found.  It shows Arch Street before it was paved.
The front says Arch Street.  Searcy Ark.
Made in Germany.  W. L. Baugh, Druggist, Wholesale & Retail Searcy Ark.
The back has a hand written note to Mrs. Mattie Hurt Eureka Springs Ark.  It was from … (7 comments)
