real estate agent: Another one bites the dust. Old house falls in Searcy Arkansas. Center Street - 07/27/10 02:39 PM
It was another double-take look as I drove by this house today.  I drive by all the time and have often wondered how the city let it remain in such bad condition.  It was not habitable and hasn't been for years.
Today, it went down.  Here's what I saw.  The house is (er...was) at the corner of Oak and Center Streets.
For memories we need to walk with Mr. Google just to see what we lost.  Below is the house that was.
I wonder what they'll do with all those trees.
I also wonder if they had any worries about leaving that tractor … (17 comments)

real estate agent: 20 years ago near Harding University in Searcy Arkansas. Apartments. - 07/18/10 11:00 AM
These apartments are NOT for sale now but they were in 1989.  An old real estate booklet with homes for sale had these in it.  First was this set of apartments.

The apartments are ok but what interested me was that water tank in the background. Where is it now and where was it then?  Is it still there but the trees are just too big for it to be seen?
Here's the second set.  We had a company in Searcy Arkansas that started making octagonal houses and two apartment complexes were set up.  They're still in good shape.  I don't know … (17 comments)

real estate agent: The 40's in Searcy Arkansas. So you think our streets are rough now???? - 04/26/10 12:43 PM
My husband says he grew up out in the country.  He says it was W-A-Y out in the country at the time he was a little boy.  I never believed him until I saw this picture.  This house was where he grew up.  It was bought by his parents when he was a wee one.  It had some land which was used to run cows.  The barn which shows in this picture was struck by lightning many years later and burned to the ground.  By that time he was married to me and the whole neighborhood came out to see the … (18 comments)

real estate agent: E. C. Blakemore & Co. Searcy Arkansas. 94 year old calendar hangs on my wall. - 04/22/10 02:45 AM
Bob Collins, a blogging friend who remembers Searcy as he grew up, says lots of mom & pop corner grocery stores existed in Searcy at one time.  Most families had no car or one car and needed to walk to get supplies.
"But the advent of supermarkets with their greater selections and lower prices along with more family cars meant the beginning of the end for these little stores.  Their suppliers such as Searcy Wholesale and the Jobber, Simon Moye, felt the change as well.  Then along came big chain convenience stores and bye-bye mom and pop," wrote Bob.  He can probably … (24 comments)

real estate agent: New restaurant in Searcy Arkansas. The Whistlestop Barbeque is like a museum... - 11/04/09 07:04 AM
A new restaurant has opened at 2315 W Beebe Capps Expressway on the West side of Searcy Arkansas.  Lots of vehicles have been parked around it saying that Searcy is trying it out.  Searcy is great about going to a new restaurant and giving it a try.  Usually ONE try!  If the food is not excellent, that's it!  It's not going to be around very long.
I gave it a try the other day.  Here's what I liked best of all.  The decor will bowl you over when you walk in the door.  There are boats hanging from the ceiling, bicycles … (12 comments)

real estate agent: Reminders of long ago when we didn't have electric clothes dryers. Not necessarily a pleasant memory. - 08/23/09 05:07 AM
Diapers?  Lots of them and they had to be hung out to dry.  Freezing weather?  Hot as hades weather?  No matter.....the wash goes on.
I'm afraid I lived through some of this and saw my mother live through a lot more of it.  I found this old basket the other day that is full of memories.
At  first it looked like a fantastic old basket that was in great shape.  Turned upside down, however, condition was truly exposed.  It had been used and used so much that a newspaper in the bottom was holding the clothes pins in.  Of course I … (30 comments)

real estate agent: 20 years ago the brokers did most closes in their offices. Congratulations Professional Escrow on your 20th Anniversary. - 06/24/09 12:09 AM

20 years ago Professional Escrow opened their doors in Searcy Arkansas.
The owner was a super-sharp and well-trained lady named Hazel English.
She had worked at one of the savings and loan operations that had suddenly become defunct.
She knew all about closes and assumptions of loans.  She announced that her entire business would consist of closing loans for real estate companies or people selling their own homes and the office was to be in downtown Searcy.
We thought she was nuts!  We snickered and said, "Well, why would anyone pay her to close a loan?  Our broker closes them for … (5 comments)

real estate agent: Bounce this Friendship Ball around the state of Arkansas. - 10/22/08 12:23 AM

Charles Buell sent me this Friendship Ball and I consider it either a true gesture of friendship or another one of his "picking on me" schemes.  I met Charles through Activerain along with lots of other fine folks throughout the country.  Charles, Home Inspector Supreme, has taught me all I'll ever need to know about water heaters and crawl spaces and bugs.  UGH!
Our state of AR (that's Arkansas, not activerain) needs attention so I want to bounce this ball to a couple of AR (remember that's Arkansas, not activerain) members.
David Bolick is in Little Rock, about 50 miles from me, and I've never met … (12 comments)

real estate agent: You may need to Early Vote.......and do it early. - 10/21/08 12:29 AM
Monday was to be my big day.  I blogged about it.  I was going to quickly early vote and check on foreclosures that were auctioned at 10:00 am.  I'd be outa there by 10:15 am.  I walked into the lobby and saw a line!  A fairly long line of voters and probably 6 or 8 helpers.  I decided that since I was there I might as well vote as planned and the foreclosure would soon be held in the lobby also.   Wrong!  There were so many early voters the foreclosure was probably held outside.  I couldn't leave my place in line so I … (10 comments)

real estate agent: Spectacular view of downtown Searcy taken from atop the Court House. - 09/13/08 12:29 AM

This old picture is another treasure and I believe it is also from our girl scout photography project done by Paula.  She took them in the 40's.  To take this she must have climbed up to the top of the Court House.  The view she took shows the old Searcy Bank which we've featured before.
What I like best about the picture, however, is the view of the houses barely in the distance.  Little rooftops are everywhere.  House rooftops, not businesses, because Searcy was still a small town and Paula, Don, Ludean, Anita and others could walk downtown at any time!  … (18 comments)

real estate agent: Have you forgotten what it was like to be young? - 09/12/08 01:05 AM
A university student called me about needing a reasonably priced home so that he could live there and possibly rent out rooms to a few friends.  We went to look at a foreclosure that really is in good shape.  It has no fleas!!  It was left clean.  It has been updated.  It has a deck for what I figure would be used for parties. The house is old, though, with no pull-down stair to get in the attic.  The student came with his brother, also in the university but 4 years older.  The younger one wanted to see in the attic.  … (18 comments)

real estate agent: First Baptist Church, Searcy Arkansas, razed to build a new one. - 09/05/08 12:39 AM

Yesterday we looked at First Methodist Church in Searcy Arkansas.  It has been expanded and expanded and expanded til it covers about a block and a half.  But it still has the original building as we saw photos of it years ago and as it is now.
Today, I'm posting some of Paula's photos of the First Baptist Church which was completely torn down and a new one built.  That makes her old photos, made for a Girl Scout's photography project, more precious.  You know, this was a darned big building in the 40's, which is about the time she … (7 comments)

real estate agent: Searcy Landmark, Old and Now. First Methodist Church. Searcy Arkansas - 09/04/08 02:27 AM

Time for another photo of downtown Searcy Arkansas.  The First Methodist Church has stood at the end of Arch Stree on Main Street for so many years.  It is shown here on an old post card that was sold at Snowden's, a 5 & 10 store that has been closed for a long time.
The church, of course, has continued to grow and stretches out over about one and one/half blocks now.  These two pictures just show what is seen from Arch as you drive toward it.  It has always been a lovely old building.

real estate agent: Fleas! More fleas! What a battle in this REO house. - 09/03/08 12:23 AM
I've written two blogs about the fleas in this REO house!  Yesterday I went to the house after stopping at the Dollar Store and buying 3 flea bombs.  I wore my shorts, sprayed my legs and timidly tread through the house to set the bombs off.  I put one in the hall, one in the dining area and one in the kitchen.  Then I fled!! As Steve Smith said, "Get the HEdoubleL out of there!"  (That Steve is so creative.  If you haven't been to his blog, visit it.)
In the yard were some kids whose grandmother lived next door.  They were familiar with … (27 comments)

real estate agent: Searcy old bank and old one being renewed. - 08/25/08 10:42 AM

Some of you have said you like my old photos and I'm glad.  Some have said to give us the present to compare with the old.  I am doing that today.  First Security Bank used to look like the picture below.  It was added on and covered over many times during the years.  Now it is being restored to some of its former majesty.  It's on the court square and the first picture is courtesy of Paula, who took it as a photography project for the Girl Scouts in the 40's.
I like the way it is looking.
