real estate: Important people in Searcy AR in 1949. Can you name them? - 11/03/12 07:45 AM
I love the way these guys are posed with so much confidence.  The tilt of the hat back then must have been a portrayal of personality.  Each man wore his hat differently.
These were on the Searcy AR School Board, I believe.  See if you can name them before I give you the names.  This picture was loaned to me by Benson and Betty Robbins and it is a great contribution to our Searcy historic blog.

real estate: Another Judsonia AR picture of the 1952 tornado. Are these folks your relatives. On ebay now. - 10/28/12 09:50 PM

Here is another very sad picture of Judsonia folks walking after the tornado that hit Judsonia in 1952.  This picture is for sale on ebay right now and does belong in the Judsonia archives so hopefully it will be found and purchased by Judsonia. Click here.
Also, since Judsonia AR is so close to Searcy AR these might be relatives of some of us.  Note there is one building in the background that is still standing.

real estate: Chiropractic ads Searcy AR circa 20's. Dr. Swartz and Dr. Teem. - 10/26/12 11:51 AM
Here are a few interesting ads from an old cookbook that dates back to possibly the 1920's in Searcy AR.
I was surprised to find two chiropractic ads.  Dr. H. O. Swartz gave instructions for a happier and more healthy life.  Dr. Jewel Teem had an office at the Peoples Bank Building that we featured recently on a blog.  Telling where he was located seemed different because most of the ads in this book just say Searcy ARK and give a phone number.

real estate: Old Searcy advertisement for Bethells No. 5, M. C. Johnson, Mgr. Phone 410 - 10/18/12 10:06 AM
Here is another ad from our old Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book.  The book is old but interesting.  It seems to date back to perhaps the 1920's.
I have no knowledge of a Bethells in Searcy AR.  I checked Dr. Muncy's history book and found nothing.  I even Googled and found nothing.  Perhaps some of our readers will have heard of it.
Piece Goods is probably a term that is no longer used.  Evidently it meant, "Everything for the family in dry goods, shoes, clothing and ready-to-wear."  Dry goods?  Another obsolete term?
No. 5?  Was that a department in the store?  … (9 comments)

real estate: I have not seen one of these before! Wooden bathtub. - 10/17/12 04:33 AM
In all my real estate career, over 31 years, I have never seen a beauty like this.
I have seen claw footed tubs.
I have seen different colors of tubs.
I even saw a urinal in the master bath once.
But this is the first wooden tub that I have ever seen.
Look and admire.

It was in a house with a view.  Sit in that tub and see the whole countryside!

real estate: Searcy Wholesale Grocer Co, Searcy Arkansas. Where was this located? - 10/16/12 10:00 AM
More ads from the old Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book.  Notice I made a change which I had not noticed before.  It is NOT Women's but Woman's Missionary Society Cook Book.
This ad is for Searcy Wholesale Grocer Co. and they ran two ads on the same page!  One is for shortening and the other for flour.  I looked at a few past blogs and did not find this particular store.  Perhaps the sleuths will locate.

real estate: Judsonia AR General Merchandise Store before the 1952 tornado that demolished the city. - 10/13/12 12:47 AM
FOR SALE ON EBAY
JUDSONIA AR RHEW MERC. CO. GENERAL MERCHANDISE.

This wonderful old post card is on ebay for sale.  Judsonia AR needs to buy this card and hang it in City Hall.
It shows Judsonia AR before the demon tornado that attacked the city in 1952.  I love the little kids in the picture, the men standing (one in awkward position) and visiting and the old automobile parked in front.  It makes me wonder if the location was the same as this current picture of a store in Judsonia.  Probably not but the before and after pictures … (7 comments)

real estate: A. B. Coffman,W.L. Ragsdale,Searcy Arkansas business owners a long time ago. - 10/12/12 12:44 AM

Here are two more ads from the Women's Missionary Society Cook Book that we think may date back to the 20's in Searcy Arkansas.
Read about the handmade clothes.  What's a bushelman?  What is Glover continuous flow?
At least we have the location of one of the businesses.  600 South Spring Street, Searcy AR.  I tried to find what is at 600 S Spring now and was unsuccessful.  Don can do it!
Just for Ms Debbie, I left a recipe on the page.  That is the entire recipe, not just a part of it.  Sounds pretty easy.

real estate: The Star car. Was this a brand? Just a dealership? Star Cars Moye-Davis Motor Co. Searcy AR - 10/08/12 07:36 AM
This full page ad came from an old cook book that is so worn I can find no date.
Women's Missionary Society Cook Book is at the tops of pages.
Moye-Davis Motor Company was at Searcy AR with Phone 296.
I love the way the description reads,  "ability to climb hills in high gear that most cars crawl up in second......enables it to pull through mud and sand that stall most cars."
But to tell the truth, I've never heard of a Star Car.

This book may even predate some of the Sleuths!

real estate: Truman Baker Chevrolet Co Searcy AR old post card. Phone # 650. - 10/06/12 04:20 AM
It does not seem to have been so long ago that we viewed this site each time we drove on E Race Street in Searcy AR.  But it is gone now.  Now it is the site of a big Walgreen's Drug Store.  Those of you who grew up in Searcy will have lots of memories of this old Armory building.  I think that is what you called it.  You'll need to verify.
This card is for sale right now on ebay.  If you want to add it to your inventory, go check it out.

real estate: Ghostly apparitions? Folks on a rock at Judsonia AR in stereoscopic view. - 10/02/12 12:34 AM

The last blog with all that scientific information about dams and things has made me long for something simple that I can almost understand.....like ghosts!
This half of the stereoscopic view provided to us by Melanie Murphy from Judsonia is full of mystery.  Look at those folks in the side grounds.  They sure have a ghostly look, don't they.  At first I thought there were four pieople in the picture and then I started seeing more. Are there three ladies on the side...or four...or more?
It makes me wonder if the images would show up clearer if viewed through the … (5 comments)

real estate: Sept 2 1921 View of Damsite near Judsonia ARK by A E Burton. Old post card. - 09/29/12 10:35 AM
Here's our latest contribution to our blog sent by James Whitmore, our blog friend who has sent us some great pictures.

Does anyone know where this would have been?  The writing says, "View of Damsite near Judsonia Ark. By A E Burton"
The back of the card is shown below.

Here is what James says about the card.
This scan of a postcard shows and tellsabout a dam being build on the Little Red River at Judsonia. It was being mailed by the Judsonia Chamber of Commerce. Maybe some of your readers can fill us in on what happen … (39 comments)

real estate: Where was this house? Sleuths, do you remember it? Searcy AR rock house. - 09/25/12 03:32 AM

I ran across this old rock house that once lived on a busy street in Searcy and we had it for sale.  One thing about those old listings that were put out by my former company was that they never gave the entire information about a house or property.
The ad was supposed to get the phone to ring.
At that time, no one could go online to find out the "rest of the story."
Now we are prone to just put the entire info in the ad because there are no secrets anymore.
So, Sleuths, test your memory … (10 comments)

real estate: True Americana picture. A D and Frances Dale from Searcy AR. Frances's Antiques on W Race Street. - 09/20/12 11:35 AM

I went into what used to be Frances's Antiques at 701 W Race today.  It is now called Dale's Collectables Antiques and Flea Market.  It is now operated by A D and Frances Dale's children.  Frances has passed on and A D closed the antique shop.
On the wall was this picture of A D and Frances.  I fell in love.  I begged to be able to put this picture on this blog. Not only is it a great picture of A D and Frances but it is telling a story.
Look at the table on the right filled … (15 comments)

real estate: Mushrooms! How I wish I knew which ones are not poisonous! - 09/19/12 07:03 AM
Taking a walk can be rather boring.  But while I was walking this morning I got all excited about the crop of mushrooms that had just popped up.
These are giant mushrooms!  One of them would fill your plate!  They looked like the ones in the grocery store that cost major dollars.

So can someone give us a few lessons on how to harvest a mushroom or toadstool as they are sometimes called in the South?  I have only known one person in my life who felt confident about gathering fresh mushrooms and safely eating them.  She no longer lives … (6 comments)

real estate: An old antique flue cover. Discovered in foreclosure property. Collectible? - 09/15/12 06:37 AM
The colors were so vivid!
It was like a splash of loveliness in a once fashionable house in the country.
If you buy the house, it will come with it but I took a quick picture. Note the reflection because the color and shine were still present.

It is, of course, a flue cover.  The folks with me told me that it was quite common to have a very colorful flue cover to cover that ugly hole that was left when the stove might be removed for the summer months.  He said some were quite large and there was a … (14 comments)

real estate: Bald Knob AR has a mansion too! Judsonia AR is not the only one with mansion. - 08/10/12 05:29 AM

Here's another great postcard photo shared by James Whitlow, who collects post cards.
This house is still in Bald Knob AR on Center Street.  Our last blog was about houses on the same street but they were not mansions like this one.  James thinks that the pictures were all taken on the same day by the same photographer because of their similarity in looks and the dates of postage.

The postmark is 1909. Refer back to the other blog for pictures of the houses nearby. The two links below also have pictures of this lovely house and one … (9 comments)

real estate: Surprise!! Great old card picture from Bald Knob AR that I had never seen! 300 Block Center St. historic homes. - 08/05/12 01:40 AM

We have made a great new friend in James Whitlow, who does not even live in our area but collects cards from lots of areas and shares with us!
Here's the latest.  He sent me this one from Bald Knob AR.  Probably Bald Knob had not named streets then but I recognized the tall two story house as one that has just sold and is now up for resale. It's number is 301 Center Street and the court house says it was built in 1917.
I love the picket fences and the wood sidewalks.  At first I thought I'd have … (22 comments)

real estate: Three faces of 219 Market St., Searcy AR. Historic downtown building. - 08/02/12 10:04 PM
219 Market Street in Searcy Arkansas sold a few months ago.
It sold to the folks who own Salon Bliss and Boutique and they have made it beautiful.  I like the fact that they appreciate history and have actually saved a building from Searcy's past and made it the location of a successful business location again.
So it is time for a review.  First is a picture taken in by Paula Windsor when she was a child and assigned a photography project.  She took lots of downtown pictures and we have had them on this blog.

Next we have … (8 comments)

real estate: They are not historic now but soon will be so save these pictures. Going down on E. Pleasure St. in Searcy AR. - 08/01/12 04:47 AM
 I remember.
I remember when this style construction was so popular.  I loved the look of native rock and frame combined.
I especially liked ranch houses built with this combination.  Evidently Harding University in Searcy Arkansas also liked the look because there are several apartment complexes built along E. Pleasure as you approach Harding that were probably built back then.
They are going down!

Your roving blogster took these pictures.  I like best the rock walls.

They are being replaced with some gorgeous buildings that I blogged about a few weeks ago.  See that blog here.   … (7 comments)
