realtor: Civilian Conservation Corps 1941 Honorable Discharge. Will we need this again? - 12/03/08 10:51 AM
While looking through old things I found this aged copy of a discharge from the Civilian Conservation Corps  a part of the plan to employ young people during the Great Depression.  With our country facing such danger right now, it seems appropriate to perhaps display this.
It goes back to a time when the forms were typed in with an old typewriter or written in ink.  This young man was transported from Georgia to California at the age of 17.  What a journey and what an adventure.  Read about the Corps at Wikipedia.  And pray that we never have to go … (13 comments)

realtor: Skunk hunt. Day # 3. VICTORY. - 11/27/08 03:08 AM
Today is Thanksgiving and I'm thankful for so many things including being free of the skunk who lived near our house.  It all started with our feeding a few little foxes.
We have trapped two possums (as recorded in the last two blogs) and the third night we captured the lovely little skunk.  He couldn't resist the smell of good food in a trap and evidently he didn't remember the agony of the possums last two nights and he gave in to his greed....or hunger.
It is truly amazing that such beautiful animals can smell so bad.  It was also interesting … (15 comments)

realtor: Skunk hunt. Day # 2 - 11/26/08 08:52 AM
Refer back to my blog about feeding God's critters and to my blog yesterday with our bagged possum.
Time for the report about our second night of skunk hunting.
We were sitting at the table eating dinner when the big battle occurred.  We'd carried away the little possum that unfortunately wandered into the trap.  But we saw an even bigger possum out there having a battle with the skunk.
They both wanted the potato peelings and the good left-overs.  The skunk let loose with a good fogging for the possum but the possum didn't stay gone long.  The smell drifted … (11 comments)

realtor: Looks as if this critter is not happy with his manicure. Critter trap Day 1. - 11/25/08 12:30 PM

My blog about critters having to eat a few days ago has inspired me to give you more of the story.  We decided that we really needed to get rid of the skunks who would probably burrow under our house and keep us sprayed or so our friends said they'd do.
So we borrowed a friend's trap in order to catch the skunk.  The skunk came calling but we didn't catch him.  We did catch this opossum (possum in the South).  He seemed to be young and eager and willing to be a star.  He paced back and forth in that cage and … (10 comments)

realtor: No, I will not go to jail for your favorite charity. - 11/17/08 11:42 AM
I thought this stuff about going to jail and making your friends bail you out was over!  It seemed to be the rage a few years back but I personally haven't heard anything about it for awhile. Today, however, during my lunch this voice called me saying someone had turned in my name and I'd be picked up to be carried off to somewhere for this particular charity.   I heard words like for MSD or something and finally I said I'm not going to do it and wasn't interested.  I was still a bit confused and didn't put it all together.  I just knew it … (34 comments)

realtor: The much maligned may be paying off for me. - 11/16/08 11:16 AM
Each year when it comes time to renew my enhanced listing agreement, I shout over the phone to the salesperson, "What!!  Are you joking!!  How can it cost that much!!"
"Well, Mrs. Duncan, you had slightly over xx listings and that put you into a higher bracket so your fee this year went up.....But this year we have added some good new features.  You can put up to 25 photos with your enhanced listing!  And I'm going to give you a break on your featured listing!"  Featured listings pull up when a city is searched.
That sold me last year so … (29 comments)

realtor: Searcy High School Girls' Basketball Team 1915. - 11/06/08 12:01 PM

In 1915 Searcy evidently had a basketball team for girls.  Here's a magnificent picture showing them with possibly their coaches.  The basketball is marked 1915.  In the background is the old school.
I believe that sometime after this the male leaders decided that sports were bad for girls and eliminated all of them.  Girls were ignored until 1972 when Title IX was passed which said basically:
""No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving … (17 comments)

realtor: Historic Black House is our Searcy Arts Gallery - 11/04/08 12:34 PM

One of our most historic homes has become our Searcy Art Gallery.  The Black House as it is called is just two blocks from the court square at 300 E. Race Street and is leased to the city by one of our prominent retired surgeons.
Today as I was headed toward home, I steered into it to see the latest display.
There was a display of lovely hats and shoes and memorabilia from the days when we wore hats.  The display is provided by Irene Crouch and is titled "For the Love of Hats."  The display was impressively laid out … (14 comments)

realtor: Snowdens! Who didn't like a 5 & 10 cent store?? - 11/01/08 07:56 AM
Searcy, Arkansas had its share of dime stores.  At least that's what I heard them called as I was growing up.  Snowdens was one of the dime stores in Searcy.
"Mama, can we go to the dime store?"
When Mama said yes we were happy kids.
Snowdens was still in Searcy AR when I arrived in about 1967.  It was located on the South side of the court square.  The Snowdens lived on Arch Street and evidently they never threw anything away but built a building behind their house to hold all the stuff.
Arch Street wasn't far from where … (17 comments)

realtor: Analysis of a perfect Halloween original art work. - 10/26/08 04:30 AM

With Halloween around the corner and little kids and big kids wanting to go out and trick or treat and dress up in fantasy costumes, I'd like to show you this picture done by a child.  It bowled me over when it was done.  (I'm a former art teacher.)
It was great for these reasons, at least in my opinion.
Kids love two story houses and this one is two story. Kids have noticed that bricks and cracks show through the stucco on spooky houses and this one depicts them in full color. Blue clouds swirl around in the black sky. … (7 comments)

realtor: Arkansas has a law about electioneering within 100 feet of poll site. - 10/25/08 07:32 AM
Our Arkansas Secretary of State, Charlie Daniels, sent out this newsletter and I found one question interesting.
Q:  Is it true that I will not be allowed to vote if I'm wearing a shirt or sticker for a certain candidate?
A:  While it's true that Arkansas law prohibits anyone from bringing or wearing campaign materials within 100 feet of a polling site (called electioneering), you will NOT be turned away from voting for doing so.  Election officials will ask you to remove any buttons, stickers or hats;  if its an article of clothing, the official will ask you to cover the message.  … (4 comments)

realtor: Now that's a balloon!! RE/MAX brand. - 10/23/08 12:08 PM
Time for only a short blog!  It has been a busy day.
I lived through frustrations, almost contracts, and a lot of fun.
So what can one blog about when one has nothing to blog about.
Oh, YES!!!!  The balloon.  I've been planning to post this fantastic balloon.  My friend took this picture for me because I'm a RE/MAX agent. I've been a RE/MAX agent since 1993!   He was at some balloon fest, probably at New Mexico.  He is a fantastic photographer and I questioned where he'd got the card.
"I took it myself,"  he replied.   How'd you like to be in … (19 comments)

realtor: Bounce this Friendship Ball around the state of Arkansas. - 10/22/08 12:23 AM
Charles Buell sent me this Friendship Ball and I consider it either a true gesture of friendship or another one of his "picking on me" schemes.  I met Charles through Activerain along with lots of other fine folks throughout the country.  Charles, Home Inspector Supreme, has taught me all I'll ever need to know about water heaters and crawl spaces and bugs.  UGH!
Our state of AR (that's Arkansas, not activerain) needs attention so I want to bounce this ball to a couple of AR (remember that's Arkansas, not activerain) members.
David Bolick is in Little Rock, about 50 miles from me, and I've never met … (12 comments)

realtor: I'm going to visit White County Courthouse tomorrow for two reasons. - 10/19/08 04:14 AM
Our Courthouse is over 100 years old and is still a busy place.  At 10:00 a.m. on lots of Mondays foreclosures are done.  A person comes from Little Rock or somewhere to read that the house at 111 Address St. is up for auction.  He reads the rules of the auction and places his own bid right there in the courthouse lobby.  He usually says that 222 Mortgage Corp bids ____ amount and are there any other bids.  Almost never are there other bids because his bid for the mortgage company includes what is owed including attorney fees. The auctions are advertised … (17 comments)

realtor: Searcy old bank and old one being renewed. - 08/25/08 10:42 AM
Some of you have said you like my old photos and I'm glad.  Some have said to give us the present to compare with the old.  I am doing that today.  First Security Bank used to look like the picture below.  It was added on and covered over many times during the years.  Now it is being restored to some of its former majesty.  It's on the court square and the first picture is courtesy of Paula, who took it as a photography project for the Girl Scouts in the 40's.
I like the way it is looking.

realtor: The atomic clock passed the test - 11/04/07 04:45 AM
Awhile back I wrote about our new atomic clock, a gift from our daughter.  We'd never heard of an atomic clock. But is is on the wall and keeping great time.  Once it seemed to be losing a few minutes and I had to change the one little battery that runs it.  Sure enough, with the new battery strength, it hustled its way to the proper time.
I was eager to awake this morning and see if it had changed times!  Absolutely it had!  I guess I never wonder about my computer changing the time automatically but that atomic clock amazes me.  … (7 comments)

realtor: A house within walking distance to downtown Searcy. - 10/17/07 06:40 AM

Searcy AR has a lot of nice homes.  Searcy has a very active downtown and this house is within two blocks of downtown.  You could walk to the Rialto, our historic old movie theater. There's an active Theater-on-the-Square that has dinner shows and children's productions.  There's a great little cafe that has famous breakfasts.  Several professional offices are on the square and several places to shop.  If you know of someone wanting to scale down and sit on a nice little porch and watch a tiny garden grow, this is it.

realtor: Be careful what you say when showing a house. - 10/16/07 05:32 AM
We all have different tastes in houses and how we would decorate them.  Through the years I've learned not to express MY opinion too strongly about a house and how it appears.  I remember having this house that was in a pretty good area with a pretty good lot but a widower lived there.
Seems his wife had been dead for some time and he'd never cleaned or dusted the place.  Dust had settled all over everything.  Nothing had been picked up;  it was awful!  I had a tendency to apologize for its condition when I showed it.
To my surprise, an … (6 comments)

realtor: I just love Google Earth and you will too.. - 10/15/07 09:38 AM
It has always been difficult to figure out where property begins and ends if it is a parcel in the country.  I used to order aerial view photos from the Arkansas Highway Department.  I'd pay about $40 for an enlargement of the area.  They were great in helping sell acreage.
Now we have Google Earth, the greatest thing to hit the internet for awhile.  Type in an address and watch the earth come closer and closer until you are there.  I called my husband in and said, "Watch as we go visit the children."  I typed in the addresses of the three … (5 comments)

realtor: I finally got noticed..... - 10/15/07 06:20 AM
As I wrestled with problems in my office, a fellow agent came by and said that he'd found and enjoyed my blog!!  WHAT!!  Someone from my office found it?   Read it?  Enjoyed it?   Well, not exactly.  He'd found it and commented on it but he'd not read all of it.
Not reading it is understandable.  He said he'd put in a search for Searcy AR homes and my blog had pulled up in addition to my website on  That "pulling up" is what we're after, isn't it.....being found on the web and being found by people who want to list and … (3 comments)
