remax advantage: Master artist, master framer, Searcy AR Terry W Williams. - 01/12/17 08:04 AM

I consider this a small masterpiece done by our local artist, Terry W Williams, and I had to do some master bargaining to get it from him.  Terry painted this in 1970 and he says it is a portrait of his dad, Nathan Hale Williams from Sunflower Co, Mississippi.  He titled it "My Share of the Crop."
Terry did not dwell on the real meaning of the title but history tells us how there was a lot of share-cropping in the South.  Farmers worked for their share of the crops and the crops might be too puny to do much sharing.  He … (2 comments)

remax advantage: Rich kid? Poor kid? Adorable child picture from 1939. - 01/06/17 11:25 AM

The portrait of this child is so interesting and appealing.  I bought it years ago and have loved it.  The first thing that I think is that this child was royalty, rich and happy.
Then I look at the child's clothing.  Those little shoes have been passed down a few times.  Notice the shoe polish on the soles.  The outfit he has on doesn't seem anything more than a normal child's outfit. So now I think that he visited some studio for a picture and the photographer had a robe to put on the children just for effect.  And a loving cup … (8 comments)

remax advantage: Duncan New and Used Cars Ole Po-Dunk and others. Searcy AR. - 12/30/16 08:25 AM

This old ad was in a 1956 Searcy AR football program with Searcy Lions battling the Beebe Badgers.  The picture shows Rodger Duncan, son of the personality-plus Po-Dunk whose motto was "What Ole Po-Dunk says it is--it is."  Vernon Duncan was the one who began the firm and all of his children followed in the business in some way.  But this was too early for kids to be involved.
What is intriquing about this ad is what is at the bottom.  It gives the names of others at the firm but only the first names.  Perhaps we need to look back and … (6 comments)

remax advantage: Cotton to Union Ware House, Searcy AR. Year unknown. Historic photo. - 12/17/16 02:51 PM

This picture says Cotton Scene -Union Ware House - Searcy Ark.
Obviously the wagons must be arriving with cotton or they have unloaded the cotton and remained browsing around.  The strange thing is each wagon has standing men (drivers I ssume).  I doubt that they drove standing up.  They must have been told to gather around for a picture!  The two men in the front wagon even appear to be dressed up.
Wonder if any sleuths know where this Union Ware House was or where this farm picture was taken. I believe I captured this picture when it was for sale on ebay and … (6 comments)

remax advantage: A mystery photo from Searcy AR. Who, when, where? Lightles at Hawkins' house. - 12/12/16 11:16 AM

A Searcy Sleuth (Anita Hart Fuller) was going through her old photos and found this one.  It shows a handsome man, a pretty little girl and a sturdy brick house.....all from Searcy AR many years ago.  Oh, and two pretty horses!  She figured out who the people were, and I won the argument about where the house was.
But .......
we are not telling yet!  For the Christmas season it should be fun to see if
any of you read this blog, know or care who these people were and tell us!
To me, it indicates a slower pace of living when folks … (5 comments)

remax advantage: Searcy AR home and old car (1956) but where was the location? - 11/25/16 02:44 PM

I know I have seen this house before but I can't remember where it was located.  Searcy Sleuths, do you remember?  I found this old picture at an estate sale on West Park Avenue in Searcy.  That is the area where so many homes have been removed for Harding's expansions.  So perhaps it was in that area and is no longer there?  One of the Super Sleuths, Don Thompson, knows how to pull up court house information showing how things "used to be."
It is a great picture, though, with an old car that Sleuths will remember the make and year. Bring … (9 comments)

remax advantage: Girls, girls. Familiar faces but no names. Searcy AR 1981 musical. - 10/24/16 04:49 AM

Imagine!  A nice picture like this one with no identification for the future......and the future is now!
This picture was found in an old Searcy Daily Citizen and I know these faces but can't recall all the names.  Please send it around and see if we can identify each of them.  They were to be in a 50's rock-style musical presented by First United Methodist Church in Searcy AR.  That would have been March 22, 1981.
I think they made another mistake by naming the director Barbara Joner.  It would have been Barbara Jones.....
Also, am I seeing one boy in the group?  It … (11 comments)

remax advantage: Holmes Road, Searcy AR. Named after the Holmes family. Old house. - 10/04/16 04:10 AM

The house that Ballard Holmes built.
This old rock house dates way back.  The court house says it was built in 1916 and that makes it 100 years old!  That's a long time and the family who built it loved it!  The family owned land around it before the town grew up all around the property so when streets were named they called the street Holmes Road.  We all travel it from time to time.
I am thinking that I, having married into this family by marrying the first grandchild that was born to the Ballard Holmes family,  took this picture sometime … (8 comments)

remax advantage: What's a spat? Late 19th century style in this historic photo. - 09/21/16 04:25 AM

The first thing that interested me when I came across this old picture was the cigar smoking dudes who looked so proud of themselves posing in their Sunday best.  Then I looked at their shoes.  Gaze down and see one man's shoe is a lace-up one.  It looks pretty worn but was the height of fashion.....probably. Now look at the other man's shoe!  It seems to have a sweater over it! The word "spat" came to mind so I hustled over to dictionary.com and looked up the word.  Mostly today it involves two people having a disagreement but it also has this … (11 comments)

remax advantage: Basketball girls 1919 Searcy AR High School photo - 09/06/16 03:33 AM

We did the boys football team from Searcy High School in Searcy AR a few days ago.  Now we have a picture from approximately the same period of a group of girls who evidently made up the basketball team.  And they are also named on the back.
The girls were:  "Seated left to right, Virginia McCain, Flo Alley (sp) Plant,Helen Williams, Lillian Taylor.
Standing, Margie Armstrong, Nell Gray, Margaret Kelly, Francie Kelly and Nolz Lee Plant."
Personally, I love the picture.  It shows how girls follow trends and always have.  Look at the hairstyles.  They are practically the same except for the girl on … (6 comments)

remax advantage: Beatles's fan. Note from the 60's showing devotion unlimited! - 09/02/16 04:00 AM

I found this note that was carefully folded with "Important!" writen on the side and probably given to a friend.  Inside the note says,

"Judy, this is part of the glove I touched the Beatles things with.  Here is some of the vital information.

Time:  Approx. 8:30 pm
Date:  Nov. 28, 1964, Saturday
Place:  6014 Mulanite, Houston Texas
Touched:  A Scotch bottle, Beatle book, sea shell found on an airplane in the compartment occupied by the Beatles.  Dallas, Texas 1964 (Sept.)

P. S.  Sorry the glove is dirty.  But I didn't have time to wash it before I touched the stuff!"

And inside the note was the … (0 comments)

remax advantage: Yarnell children? Headlee family historic photos. Searcy AR. - 08/29/16 11:11 PM

I love it when I get picture contributions from some of the Searcy Sleuths.  Tom Headlee has given me permission to share this one with you and he gives a little history about it.  He and I are both hoping that perhaps these beautiful children can be identified and the location can be pointed out.  Who knew Searcy may have had "row" houses but these two do look alike, don't they.
Thanks, Tom Headlee!!
Hi Barbara -  Here is one of the more interesting pictures from my grandmother’s (Mildred Yarnell Headlee) collection.  Unfortunately, it was not labeled.  I am sure it was taken in Searcy…likely … (5 comments)

remax advantage: Survived the 1952 Judsonia AR tornado. Now for sale. - 08/24/16 10:45 PM
Blogs live for such a long time!  I had a comment today from another person who survived the Judsonia tornado of 1952. He had found and read the blog that was written in 2008 when I was new to blogging.  If you'd like to review the blog and comments click here.
The picture in that blog, shown below, had this house in it alongside the mansion that is still proudly standing in Judsonia AR.  It was strongly built and the owners have kept it looking good through the years.  It is right now on the market for sale by Jimmie England … (4 comments)

remax advantage: Learning advanced ipad tricks from a 7 year old! - 08/12/16 06:40 AM

Do I know as much as a 7 year old?
Absolutely not!
I have this new ipad that was bought at a charity auction last night and I was needing help learning how to make it work.  Presley, a 7 year old, took charge.  She showed me how to go to Photo Booth and do all kinds of things.  I loved it when she did this circular set of images of herself.  First she made the images with ugly scary faces.  No!  I did not like that one.  Second she did it with a great big smile that showed some missing teeth.  … (4 comments)

remax advantage: U. S. Post Office. Batesville AR and old theater. 1955. - 08/03/16 05:17 AM

An antique shop had reduced the price of this old picture to $2 and that is within my price range. I like it because it makes me think of theaters and old streets and old cars.  See the old theater in the background with a big sign beside the building saying "Untamed."  Was that a picture show way back then?  In Searcy AR we are having our old Rialto Theater redone so I wonder if Batesville still has this theater.
Our Searcy Sleuths can date this thing by the age of the cars but the picture had a date of 1955!  … (2 comments)

remax advantage: White County Court House, Searcy AR, view approx. 1915. - 07/28/16 10:27 AM
This old picture that I found at an antique shop in Keo AR shows our beloved White County Court House as it looked in approximately 1915, as noted on the picture.  It seems relevant to post this picture today because this afternoon in Searcy AR there was a celebration held to note the new improvements to the court square.  Speakers, music, ice cream and lots of enthusiasm were to be shown right around this building.  A big storm blew up and I stayed home but I hope it went well.
The building was built in 1871 and remodeled in 1912, so history … (4 comments)

remax advantage: What's going on here? Weird powers of gravity. Mystery Forest. Angola Indiana - 07/19/16 09:59 AM

This could be me!  I think of "me" each time I look at it.  It is dated 5/30/67 and was taken evidently at Mystery Forest, Angola, Indiana, 3.5 miles North on US 27 and it says it is demonstrating the weird powers of gravity.  It is a postcard.
Why me?  Because of the dress.  She has on a matched pant suit, keds with no socks, and has a short hairdo (black hair which I once had....sigh....) that was popular at the time.  I can't tell if it is double knit but double knit was wonderful!  No iron, never wrinkle fabric that everyone … (7 comments)

remax advantage: Grease, the musical, coming to Searcy AR. How they need to dress. - 07/16/16 12:57 AM

Let's use a little history to be helpful.  Grease, the musical, is coming to town.....to Searcy AR and is to be performed at Theater on the Square  right here in our little city!  I look forward to going.  It will be a huge amount of work and they'll be working on costumes for sure.
So here is where we help out.  This is an authentic picture of what was worn in 1957 by really cool guys.  Notice!  Rolled up jeans, saddle oxfords (two-toned?), letter sweaters and jackets, and flat top haircuts.  And they felt their importance to the extent of being able … (6 comments)

remax advantage: Bill Davis Service Station, Searcy AR. 210 W Race St. - 07/12/16 01:10 AM

This picture came from a 1962 high school year book.  We can certainly remember when there was a filling station on every corner....so it seemed.  The station took care of all our car needs.  Check your oil.  Wash your windows.  Be sure the tires have the right pressure.  Remember how they'd come out and ask, "Filler up?"
We have two full service filling stations left in Searcy AR and I admit that one of my luxuries in life is to visit one of them.  This filling station is no longer here and was eliminated many years ago.  The location was 210 … (14 comments)

remax advantage: Real Estate 1963? Here's a possible example of marketing. - 07/07/16 06:50 AM

Look!  I captured this treasure in an antique store for 10 cents.  It is a card with a house on one side and a description of the house on the other.  Further examination indicates that it was a method to market the house!
I fail to find a state but perhaps you know where Benton Harbor is.  It has the broker's name (Lindenfeld), the price of the house, the size of rooms, the taxes, the terms of showing and just about the same thing we put in our MLS listings today!  It says it has a full basement so that rules out … (10 comments)
