reos: Another completed mural in downtown Searcy AR. Done by Harding University. - 06/03/11 09:39 AM
A few weeks ago I did a blog bragging about the murals that are on the side of a building on Spring Street in downtown Searcy Arkansas.  Here's the blog.  Go back and review that blog.
Now they have finished another one.  It's in my favorite color....blue.  This one seems to be publicizing ASU, Arkansas State University, along with Harding University.  The mural is done by Harding University so it shows our comraderie in our little town.  I think they are all lovely.

reos: The way it used to be in Searcy Arkansas, right on the fringe of town. 1600 W Pleasure. - 05/26/11 01:44 PM
You think we have cookie-cutter houses today and they are all basically the same?  Possibly so.
But it has always been that way.  Style is style, whether you're talking about clothing or cars or houses.  It was the style once to build houses like this one.

How many of these have you seen around town and most of them are just about worn out.  I have to plead guilty to having put this one away to pasture.  I tore it down.  It is not satisfying to be a slumlord and when a house becomes so bad that no one can comfortably … (34 comments)

reos: A new look on East Race Street to an old building in Searcy AR. - 05/23/11 01:13 PM
This building was so old and the real estate company that had been there had closed.  We no longer have a Century 21 in Searcy Arkansas.  I really thought the building would be torn down.  The picture below looks good (made by the google man) but after the real estate company closed it went down further and further.  Too bad I didn't take a picture just before it sold and started a new life.

Now when you drive by you see this magnificent front.  It is impressive to see what the new owners have done.  I'm not sure I like … (6 comments)

reos: Arkansas used to have the best strawberries in the world. Lots of pickers were required. - 05/09/11 03:09 PM
Strawberries are ripe right now around Searcy Arkansas.  Driving from Searcy Arkansas to Bald Knob Arkansas (which used to be called the strawberry capital of the world) along the old highway will possibly find lots of people with freshly-picked strawberries for sale.
They're pretty expensive this year, probably about $4 a quart.  Folks who have a wild desire for strawberries are going to have to pay dearly.
An old family diary indicated that the teenage girl and two of her friends were going to McRae to stay at the home of a family and pick berries.  They stayed a few days and didn't … (19 comments)

reos: Ghost architecture in Searcy Arkansas. Makes you wonder what it once looked like. - 05/06/11 03:06 PM
My blog buddy, Anita, once had me distracted by looking for "ghost signs" which were old signs painted on brick buildings.  We blogged a few of those.
While downtown in Searcy Arkansas I looked up from my parking space and saw "ghost architecture."
Yes, that's a good name for it.  These brick buildings have been renovated but there are signs of the past all over them.

I wonder whether we could get someone who is an expert with Photoshop who could give us the original view of these buildings.  They liked curves!!

reos: It was a snow day in old Searcy Arkansas. Stott's Drug Store. Citizen Publishing. - 04/24/11 02:22 PM
It may not have been the same day..
But then...it could have been the same day..
SNOW excites people in the town of Searcy Arkansas.  It did then and it does now.
These two pictures seem to go together.  I feel as if someone was running around town taking pictures of the snow.  They gathered lots of folks in front of Stott's Drug Store.

In fact, they may have gathered up everyone at this store and left the Citizen Publishing Office, just down the street, empty.  Note Sowell's Furniture.  You Searcy Sleuths will have to name the other stores from … (18 comments)

reos: Parade in Searcy Arkansas. Queen on float and old buildings downtown. - 04/21/11 01:19 PM
Perhaps I'm stuck on parades!  Perhaps you are tired of them but here's another one.  Searcy Sleuths should be able to name this girl and the approximate time of the parade.
What I like best are the buildings in the background.  Searcy Bank , Headlee's Rexall, and some that are not readable but still in the memories of the Sleuths.  Isn't the Dr. Pepper sign where we now find Sowell's Furniture?
A word about the girl's fur coat!  They used to be the thing to wear and now you might be ridiculed if you went out in public in one.  She … (17 comments)

reos: VIPs from Searcy Arkansas in the 50's. Who are they? Searcy Sleuth's puzzle. - 04/03/11 01:59 PM
Searcy Arkansas in the 50's was evidently a fun place to live.  Looking back through an old annual I found two really lovely girls who were important persons in their school years.
First, I found this young lady who was co-editor of the yearbook.  That's a big honor!  Here she is?  Who is she?

Then I found a real treasure.  This lady was named Miss Searcy High School!  What a thrill!  So who was she?  If you know who they are, you need to tell something about them when you identify them.

Be sure to note the styles.  Saddle … (24 comments)

reos: Peace. Quiet. Lake outings and birthday cakes. - 03/20/11 02:42 PM
When have you even thought about folks taking a slow boat trip on a lake?  When did you last see a picture of folks doing that?  It was all in the movies.  The lady would have on hat and gloves and huge skirt.  The man would be dressed to the tails, too, and they'd be floating around with romance in the air.
Here we have a more realistic scene.  Bathing suit.  Taking care of the kid!

And while we take a glance back, let's study this one.  In the past it was not fashionable to have kids get birthday cake … (11 comments)

reos: When REOs are repeated it becomes a challenge. Look for beauty anyhow. - 05/11/10 03:00 PM
For the second time this year I have been assigned an REO that was an REO about two or three years ago and I had the pleasure? of marketing it.  It's an REO again!  The one today required a drive into the country and when I got to it a guard dog wouldn't let me get out of the car.  There's never a dull moment with REOs.
But look what I found on the way!!  The bleached wood on this old building that is falling down in places was priceless. It was easy to see with no shrubs and trees covering … (14 comments)

reos: Linoleum in a pattern that was pretty and servicable. Floor covering from the past. - 04/21/10 12:26 AM

Remember linoleum?  This house, built in 1927, still has a few original things about it, and I think the linoleum on this floor is one of them.  Note the wood floor also.  it appears to have been painted before the linoleum was placed over the wood.
Your grandparents, or in my case my parents, didn't like the ugly wood floors and did what they could to spruce them up.  They might paint them in different colors and patterns or they could go and buy a large roll of linoleum and unroll it on top of the wood.  This floral pattern … (21 comments)

reos: Please tell me that this REO discovery is not Nutsy Wallenda, my little squirrelly godson. - 03/31/10 01:45 PM
I repeat, you never know what you will find at an REO property.  Look what I found at the last one I visited.

It might have been Nutsy Wallenda, my little godson from Bellingham Washington, finally arrived in Arkansas for a visit.  He wasn't afraid of me and posed nicely for this picture.  You know what a ham Nutsy is...........
A little while later I came back near this tree and Oooops!!   I almost missed this view of a worn out squirrel.  It has to be the way Nutsy looks after a round of insults and battling with Mr. C, … (12 comments)

reos: See if you can see the hidden message in this REO photo. Ghosts may be present. - 08/20/09 12:22 AM

We've said this over and over and over.
You never know what to expect at a foreclosure property.
A ghost?
A hidden message?
When I got back to my office with pictures of this REO I noticed something strange in this picture.
I had not noticed it when I was in the bathroom taking pictures.
Spooky!  But here it shows up like a haunting refrain from some lady who might have lived here.  Don't give up.  It took me awhile to realize what it was also.  Then you'll have to laugh!!  Spooky, spooky.

reos: What a difference a little power-washing will make to your listing. - 03/09/09 01:59 PM
In Arkansas, a big problem we have is with mildew growing on the outside of our buildings.  Brick is not so bad or else we can't see it.  Vinyl is tough to keep clean.
A new foreclosure coming up for sale is in good shape except for the look of the outside.  It has an attractive exterior, a shop (GUYS LOVE THESE!) and great kitchen and 4.5 acres!!
The end of it looked like this when I first visited it.
I had the power-washing house-cleaning guy go over and now it looks like this!

Would you agree that whatever it … (19 comments)

reos: You can't make an old house into a new house! - 12/07/07 12:26 PM
It happened again today.  I found the REO that had to be rekeyed and started taking my photos for the estimate of value.  It looks like some folks were busy as beavers working on this old house.  There were indications of someone perhaps living in it for awhile.  They had drawers in the kitchens pulled out.  There was some new sheetrock.  There was crown molding on the floor where they had planned to fix it NICE, with crown molding and all.  There was uncovered old hardwood floors plus some that had to be fixed probably because of rot.  The house was … (17 comments)

reos: Things to look for in identifying a Meth lab... - 11/01/07 03:05 AM
We had a speaker come to our Board meeting yesterday and he gave us information on what to look for when you enter a house and could possibly be stepping into a former meth lab.  I'm passing along his information in case you are in the REO business and may be worried about empty houses or not-so-empty houses.
Things to look for in identifying a Meth lab

Unusual strong odors (like cat urine, ammonia, ether, acetone or other chemicals).
Excessive trash including large amounts of items such as antifreeze containers, lantern fuel cans, red chemically stained coffee filters, drain cleaner and duct tape.
Windows blacked … (9 comments)

reos: Deferred maintenance supreme example. - 10/30/07 08:34 AM

Believe it or not, I had this house listed about 20 years ago.  The tree was crowding the storage room even then. Inside the storage room is also the laundry closet that opens from the inside of the house and backs out into this room.
It has recently been foreclosed and it was interesting to see what the tree had done to the patio and the extension of the house.  It takes a long time for a tree to reach this size so the maintenance was deferred for all those years.  Believe it or not, also, the same people lived here for … (7 comments)

reos: Bullet hole close up.....in cook stove.... - 10/26/07 01:59 PM
REO's are always somewhat scary to go into.  You never know what you'll find.  I walked into this one, however, and thought I was lucky.  It looked clean for a change.  There was a a little broken tile and shattered glass but not bad.
Upon closer inspection, however, I discovered what looked like a gaping hole in the stove and another in the dishwasher.  Going outside, I could see where the holes had begun.  My locksmith and I agreed that someone had SHOT through the house.  Whether it was for spite and hatred or whether it was from a crazy neighbor … (15 comments)
