rock houses: Little kids grown up. Holmes House Searcy Ar revisited. - 06/07/17 01:55 PM

Look at these cute kids but also look at the old house in the background.  This picture was made when the Ballard Holmes family lived there.  They built it and everyone loved it.  It is, in fact, still loved now by the present owners who invited the now slightly older family members to come and visit.
The family jumped at the opportunity and the visit was delightful.  I was able to take a picture of four of the above kids standing on the front porch of the old house.  For fun, see if you can match them with the pictures above.  One … (2 comments)

rock houses: Another rock house, still standing and looking great in Searcy AR. Built 1935. - 01/08/14 11:25 PM
Lots of changes are made in a growing city, which is what our Searcy AR is.
It is a pleasure to drive by a house that is largely unchanged and in apparent great condition.  That is the situation if you drive by 410 E Park.  Roger Dobbins sent me a photograph of this house and says his grandparents, Elbert and Annie Melton built it.  The courthouse records say it was built in 1935.

He doesn't say what year this picture was made.  Look at the size of the tree that was cut down on the right and look at those … (9 comments)

rock houses: Old rock houses and more creativity in Searcy Arkansas. - 06/21/12 11:02 AM
We found another charming old rock house in Searcy.  It needs repairs but still has potential and you know how we have bragged about these things before.  We have featured them several times.  Here goes again.

That is the basic look but lets go up closer for the creativity that shows through.  The grout has had added "bling."

That bling is pretty unusual but look at what I found in the closeup!  7Up!!

The rock artist went one step further in being creative with these kitchen windows.  He curved them and definitely it would have been easier to … (19 comments)

rock houses: The rock house on Holmes Road Searcy AR built by Ballard Holmes a long time ago. - 05/26/10 02:20 PM
This is a continued blog it seems.  We start out with an innocent city slicker accusing the Holmes's of having loud braying mules which actually turned out to be jacks.
Then we showed an old house of the Holmes's which they inhabited before building a fortress of a rock house on the side of Holmes' mountain.  Here's a picture of my now-deceased mother-and-father-in-law during their courting days.  He must have been showing off how he could ride a horse.  He really pursued that pretty Holmes girl named Wyndelene.

Behind them is the Holmes's rock house.  Being almost a fortress it still stands so … (13 comments)

rock houses: Searcy in the 40's continued. Corner of N Sowell and W McRae looking East. - 04/28/10 12:19 PM
A blog a day or so ago showed the mud street leading to the house where my husband grew up on the very fringe of Searcy Arkansas.  In the batch of pictures was this one also showing the street when looking East from the driveway of the Duncan house.
I've never seen a more beautiful child than this happy one playing with his tricycle but the interest is in the houses on the corner behind him. The old one on the right was torn down probably 40 years ago.  You can see a rock house on the left side and it's still … (12 comments)

rock houses: This old house may be from another town? Perhaps Heber Springs? - 01/23/10 06:28 AM
Notice the brick and rock work on this house.  There are hundreds of houses in our area of Arkansas with this finish.  You see them on the side of the highway, on older streets in Searcy, on the main streets of Searcy if they haven't been torn down, and in surrounding towns.
The construction looks complex to me.  Someone once said there was a rock man who did this as his specialty.  If my blog buddies know who he was, give him credit.
I have looked and looked for this house and can't find it in Searcy Arkansas.  I have discovered this light … (15 comments)
