searcy ar: 5 year diary has been replaced by facebook? Absolutely. - 04/19/15 12:11 AM

What a lovely picture.
This is a 1937 five-year diary that was started by my now-deceased mother-in-law.  She added things to it everyday.  She probably also kept it hidden so that little brothers or nosy sisters couldn't find it and read the private notations. The picture is taken on an aged oak desk top that is perhaps older than the diary.
Guess what?
I have been watching facebook and participating somewhat with pictures and opinions from time to time.  But I don't pour my heart out like I have observed others doing.  Folks will sometimes rant and rave about things that probably should … (13 comments)

searcy ar: PEO ladies from Searcy AR. Can you name them? - 04/05/15 06:23 AM
My good friend and blog buddy Anita Hart Fuller has shared this picture with us.  Seems her aunt is in the group and somehow Anita has inherited the photograph.  These dressed-up ladies made up the PEO chapter for Searcy AR, I think.  Don't ask me what PEO means or stands for because I have never been invited to join and the members say the meaning of the initials is a secret.  It is a wonderful picture, however, and I know lots of the ladies.  Some have passed on and all have become older but all were then and are now fine … (2 comments)

searcy ar: Judsonia AR Landis Cafe & Filling Station. Price is Right! - 03/16/15 04:56 AM
Now that sounds like a tricky title.  Sounds as if Landis Cafe and Filling Station is for sale.  And I AM a real estate agent looking for things to sell.  But that is not what I meant.
I meant that I have found a great old post card showing the old Landis Motel Cafe and Station at Highways 64 and 67 in Judsonia, Arkansas.  Their slogan was "We Doze but Never Close."  Air-conditioned rooms, new and modern.  Here is the way it looked in 1958.

It looks so clean and neat, doesn't it?  But what is interesting and surprising is … (8 comments)

searcy ar: Fred Stewart Searcy AR cartoonist remembered. - 03/12/15 10:34 PM

While working on a real estate transaction, I received this book as a gift.  I did not know that Fred Stewart had written a book and was very pleased to receive it.  I have now read it through and looked at all of the cartoons and the book IS a cartoon book with 88 pages.  It shows his talent and makes me wish he was still around.
This is a part of what he says about himself on page two.
"Fred Stewart has been involved in law enforcement since 1964 when he started with the Skokie, Ill. police department.  He … (2 comments)

searcy ar: An original Valentine's Day card. Worth keeping! 1981 by Pugh. - 02/28/15 10:12 PM

I didn't throw this card away!  And I just found it tucked away in a spot where I was searching for something else.  Here's what it said inside,
"Happy belated Valentine's Day!  I know this card is late, but it's well worth it because it has a homemade picture of mom-the-real-estate-monster on the front.  The title is 'I'm sold on you, Valentine. (ah, shucks-- isn't that sweet?!)'
Anyway, don't throw this valentine away (with all the commercial ones) because one of my sorority sisters took time out from heavy studying to make it."
I was new in real estate … (7 comments)

searcy ar: Roseann Motel Searcy AR. Two stories for a short time. - 02/06/15 09:34 AM
Anyone in Searcy AR knows where the Roseann Motel is.  Lots of Searcy folks used to swim there, or had relatives and friends who stayed there.  We did not know nearly as much about it as we thought, however, until Brad Morris wrote about it on Facebook.
Brad began by telling how his parents built the motel in 1953.  He said it was much the same as the current building but where the lobby and restaurant is was a two story with winding stairs that went up to their living quarters.  He said to go to the 1955 Searcy High … (7 comments)

searcy ar: 1948 Ramsey Printing Co Searcy AR Phone 170 - 01/31/15 10:33 PM
This is a page from an old note pad that was probably given away to customers of this printing firm in Searcy AR around 1948.
The strange thing is I have never heard of Ramsey Printing Co but that is not important since I am a newcomer to Searcy AR.  And there is no 601 N 8th Street in Searcy AR today.  This is a definite case for the Searcy Sleuths.  Anita should be able to check her ancient phone book for the number 170.  Don will figure out what happened to 8th Street and find the history of the whole … (5 comments)

searcy ar: Can you advertise your competition? Town and Country Properties. Searcy AR. - 01/15/15 10:40 PM

It probably is not smart to advertise your competition.....UNLESS your competition is no longer your competition.  Thinking that the Searcy Sleuths need another challenge I'm putting up this old advertisement that was in the 1976 high school yearbook without giving the address or the owner of the property.
I love the picture!  I like the car and that driver sure looks like a dapper individual.  I even like the motto, "Happiness Adds and Multiplies as We Divide It With Others."  I also like the fashion in jeans and remember it so well.  The jeans were bell bottomed and had … (0 comments)

searcy ar: Old hospital. Another picture found as follow up. - 01/10/15 05:15 AM

This blog is a lot of fun.  I put up an old picture of a hospital a few days ago and some of the Searcy Sleuths knew where it was and had actually visited there.  They called it the MOPAC hospital that was sponsored by the MOPAC railroad.  I dug down further and came up with this picture which appears to be the same property and perhaps on the same day.
On the back of this one is written "the tow bldg is nurses quarters next high bldg is Col Scott house the tall bldg is city hosp."  I'm … (0 comments)

searcy ar: May Bus Line Searcy AR. Anyone remember it? - 12/29/14 08:45 PM
Sherry Quattlebaum Person has shared a photo with us that might bring back memories for someone.  She says that the bus ran from Searcy to Rose Bud and Center Hill and Joy.  The only people that she recognized from this group were her mother, Frances Hall (to be) Quattlebaum and Willie Corrine Russell Wooten.  She hopes someone may recognize the rock building that the bus is parked in front of and perhaps know why the group was gathered.  After all, it might have been pretty hard to get a group of bus patrons to stand still and pose.

Now, Sherry … (13 comments)

searcy ar: Almost worth a trip to see. 4' long old Searcy AR picture. - 12/19/14 04:18 AM
One of our agents bought this old 4' long picture at an auction.  No one seems to have wanted it and she knew I would like it.  She bought it to the RE/MAX office and has shared it with us.  Now doing a scan of this proved difficult so I just took pictures.  It is a real glimpse of how life was in 1929, the approximate date of the picture.  It shows the school buildings, I think, and old houses in the background.  The dress style of all ages is revealed.  If you have time, just enjoy it face by face!

I … (15 comments)

searcy ar: You wanna see the 50's? Here it is. Beebe AR girl's basketball team. - 11/25/14 04:08 AM
So you think the 50's meant poodle skirts?  I grew up in the 50's and never heard of a poodle shirt.
BUT........this picture is a perfect depiction of the 50's.  It is supplied by Super Sleuth Anita Fuller from her personal collection of photos.  These girls made up the junior Beebe AR basketball team in 1951 and 1952.  Anita played for Searcy.  I asked her for a picture of Searcy's team and she had none.  None!  The yearbook did not have a single picture of girl's sports because they were unimportant.  Later on the Searcy Schools eliminated the team completely!   … (11 comments)

searcy ar: Gill Hotel existed where the Mayfair is now. What happened to it? - 11/09/14 02:14 AM
My friend on the internet is James Whitlow, who collects pictures and postcards and has shared the cards that he has with Searcy or surrounding areas information on them.  He has emailed me another one.  It is the Gill Hotel that was once located where our historic Mayfair Hotel is now.

It is hard to believe that this was in Sarcy AR because it looks almost like a lake behind it and it appears to be on an incline.
However, Muncy's history of Searcy says this about the hotel, "The Gill House experienced a fire four days after Searcy greeted … (9 comments)

searcy ar: Tired of traditional or country style?? Try contemporary!! - 10/09/14 11:27 PM
Tucked away on a nice little 1.22 acre lot just outside of Searcy AR is this unique, one-of-a-kind, custom-built home.  The floorplan is OPEN, way open with bedrooms tucked away at either end of the rectangular great room.  Four (count them) expensive sliding glass doors will open the house to the delightful winds of the outside when desired.  A deck as long as the house will accomodate your guests if you want to have a huge party.  Take a look!  See that little window at the top?  That's a little loft room above the master bedroom that makes a perfect office.

searcy ar: Jack's Saloon, 216 Central Ave, photo op? real bar? Arkansas Traveler - 08/23/14 11:23 AM
A neat old post card.  Post cards must have been easy to have made and could be quite personal.
So what's the deal with this old card.  Was it a real saloon or was this just a place for the Arkansas Traveler to posy up for a picture.  Note the top sign says "Arkansaw Traveler."

The young man posed here appears to be too fancy dressed to be operating a saloon and my eyes are not keen enough to be able to read all the signs.  So I suspect that this was a place where you could stop, pay … (10 comments)

searcy ar: Morris School for Boys, Searcy AR, reunion held Aug. 16, 2014 - 08/17/14 11:43 AM
We have written several blogs featuring some old pictures of Morris School for Boys that operated in Searcy Arkansas for many years.  Some of the boys, now men, got together for a reunion August 16, 2014, and they shared this group picture with me.  And Larry Binz, who forwarded the picture to me, gave me permission to share it with you blog friends.  I have cut it in order to get the whole picture in.

Mr. Binz wrote this about the picture.
Several students who attended the former Morris School for Boys west of Searcy gathered for a reunion … (24 comments)

searcy ar: No! No! I WILL NOT BE USING A DRONE!!! A drone for real estate? - 08/08/14 03:40 AM
During my real estate career I must admit that I have sorta been forced into things by a forceful daughter.  Way back in the early 1990's she made this statement, "Mom, you need a computer."
"What's a computer?" was my probable reply.  She conveniently left hers with me while she wasn't using it and I played around on it and fell in love.  1993 sticks in my mind because that's when I bought my very own computer.....a little laptop that didn't take up much room in my tiny office.  I was able to type all my clients in and let them … (24 comments)

searcy ar: 1950. Ladies from Searcy AR in evening gowns. Ann Lacy included. - 08/04/14 07:20 AM

This picture has a date of May 3 1950.  It shows several Searcy ladies posed in their evening dresses for a picture of some kind.  Perhaps the Searcy Sleuths will recognize the location of the gathering.  The first girl on the left, front row, is Ann Lacy.  I remember her.  She was a gentle and kind teacher in the Searcy Schools.  She died May 20, 2010 and her obit said
"she was greatly involved with the Daughters of the American Revolution, her church, First Presbyterian Church of Searcy, and her love and passion for teaching elementary school."
Searcy Sleuths may … (7 comments)

searcy ar: Morris School Searcy AR reunion planned! 45 or 50 year span invited. - 07/23/14 05:44 AM

Guess what?
I am not a boy and I am not an attendee of Morris School for Boys in Searcy AR but I have been invited to their reunion!  The invitation is because of this blog.  I featured several old pictures of the school that were found on ebay from time to time.
Several comments came in from boys who did attend the school.  Somehow they have joined forces and plan to have a get-together at the location that is now used for church services but used to be their school.  The picture above shows boys studying in the library.  … (10 comments)

searcy ar: History for sale. Less than $12,000 for a big house with lots of character. - 07/16/14 01:48 AM

What a house and what a bargain!  This property is located in Wilbur Mills's home town of Kensett AR, a little town that still has trains going through it frequently.  Kensett is just a few miles from Searcy AR.
It was built, according to the courthouse, in 1936 and has 4 bedrooms, 1.5 baths and 2126 sq. ft.
Sure, it needs work.  Lots of work but buying it and redoing it would keep history alive and well in White County.  For photos of the house and the inside go to my website,, or to the listing agent's website,  … (3 comments)
