searcy ar: Facebook. Surprise! - 01/21/09 11:34 AM
I was just asittin' there playing in the rain when an email popped up.
It said that Johnny S______ wanted to be my friend on Facebook.
Oh, yes!!   That's Johnny from way back when I taught school and he stayed at my house a lot and was best friends with my son and I hadn't heard from him in about 12 years.
So I'm clicking to say I'll be his friend.
What's that pop up thing?   It is saying something like, "Barbara Anne......?"
There's a little cursor thing at the bottom of the pop up that seems to be winking at … (42 comments)

searcy ar: Economy Wholesale, Searcy Arkansas old photograph. - 01/19/09 08:56 AM

Since we had so many Searcy people trying to figure out yesterday's old photo, here's another.  I believe Paula made this with her Girl Scout's project in photography in the 40's.
I can remember, almost, hearing people talk about Economy Wholesale, but being new in town, I certainly don't know anything about it.  So where was this, whose car was this, is this the front or the back and is that Don Thompson standing on the porch?  LOL

searcy ar: Politically incorrect conversation in a hospital or business location. - 01/14/09 11:53 AM
Nurse comes in and asks how the patient is.
Hubby, "I'm fine and how are you?"   Well, he's not fine.  He's there for elective surgery and is sitting in bed with a gown on and a hairnet.
I am sitting in a chair beside him wishing I were somewhere else.
Nurse says, "Well, I don't feel so good.  I'm just getting over something."
Hubby, cringing, says, "Are you just getting over the flu?"
I, sitting in the chair, slide it back a little further from her.  I can see Hubby having a premonition that he was going to be getting more than … (19 comments)

searcy ar: Relocation completed! Skunk has new home! - 01/13/09 12:25 PM

Perhaps you get tired of hearing about skunks and possums and how many we have around my house due to our being too free with food and because my Raven-eating cat has cat food on the porch which she'll share if she has a juicy crow or bird to eat.
But here's another success story.  We had a heck of a time catching this one.  He absolutely played with our minds.  He was so beautiful with the white and black stripes.  As I saw him flaunting his beauty I wondered why no one has ever had a skunk-fur coat.....probably not even Cruella De … (41 comments)

searcy ar: For appraisal purposes, what is a room? How do you count them? - 01/10/09 01:24 AM
We have been educated by Charles Buell's blog about what makes a bedroom.  That man is so thorough!  If you've never visited his blog, do so now.  He is a home inspector who lives in Washington with his deceased friend Raven.  He occasionaly has a squirrel named Nutsy visit him. But with all his quirks he's still a smart guy who writes a good blog.
Unfortunately when I first started blogging I didn't know Charles so he probably didn't see this blog.  In fact, probably no one else did either.
The blog was about something that bothers me to this day.  Each time … (45 comments)

searcy ar: Old Lattimer House, now known as Strother-Wilbourn Land Title Building. - 01/01/09 08:10 AM

Driving around Searcy and admiring some of the old buildings, you're apt to come upon this one.  It is located near downtown at 308 E Market and is one active business location today.
It's known now as Strother-Wilbourn Land Title Company but previously was known as the Lattimer House.  I'll have to call on my Searcy history experts to tell me who the Lattimers were.
The Strothers did most of the title searches in White County for years.  Several years ago Jim Wilbourn became the owner and he still does the majority of title searches in our area.  He also bought … (25 comments)

searcy ar: Jim's Dining Car from old Searcy Arkansas - 12/28/08 08:29 AM

Here's another great picture of old Searcy Arkansas.  I've never seen this picture before and had no idea that there was once a converted railroad car located at the corner of West Race and Pine Streets.  This picture was sent to me by Don Thompson who says he loved eating there because they had the very best BBQ sandwiches and pecan pie.
Don also says that one of the ladies at the entrance is Anita Fuller's mother, Corrine Hart.  Don and Anita are frequent contributors to this blog!  Thanks to both of you.  Now hopefully, we can get a little more … (20 comments)

searcy ar: It's a topsy turvy world when you're 16 years old!! - 12/19/08 11:30 AM

This young man just turned 16!!
He has had a red truck for about two years just waiting for him to be old enough to drive it by himself.  The legal driving age in Arkansas is 16.
His parents agreed to keep him off the roads until he was of age legally.  On his birthday he was up bright and early and eager to get to school early and find a parking space.
Then it iced over!!  Mean old Mother Nature delayed his getting out and trying his wheels.
Since he's a favorite of mine, I called on … (13 comments)

searcy ar: The Praline man came calling tonight and I was delighted to see him! - 12/18/08 11:51 AM
The doorbell rang!
My husband said that I have a guest so get off that computer and come and greet him!
It was the praline man!!!  OMG!!  I was so happy to see him.  He's better than Santa but similar because he comes once a year.  The special treat that he brings is pralines!
What's a praline?
A praline is a special candy that is made from brown sugar, granulated sugar, cream, butter and pecans.  And calories.
It's a delicacy of the South.  Wikipedia says that it dates back to New Orleans colonial origins.  You can buy pralines on the … (19 comments)

searcy ar: A real paint job! Historic Searcy home is getting a face-lift. - 12/17/08 02:00 PM

I once had this house listed.  It's one of Searcy's most historic homes with wrap porch, (note part of the wrap porch has been turned into more living space) sleeping porch, and it even had a small basement where the heating furnace once was found.  The staircases were lovely.  Wood floors, original windows and some seriously beautiful updating had been done when I had it for sale.
As I drove by the other day, I noticed it is being painted!  That will give the painters a job for a long time because the house is all wood and has to be scraped, … (22 comments)

searcy ar: A sad public apology to a friend on the Rain, Mr. Charles Buell, Home Inspector - 12/07/08 04:22 AM
I have tears in my eyes as I write this public apology to Mr. Buell, Home Inspector, Artist, Bird Tamer, and blogger friend.  He has tamed this bird and called it the Raven.  Ooops, I meant he HAD tamed this raven and trained it as an assistant.
HAD is the sadness.  The bird came calling on me in Arkansas since I have bragged on her beauty.
I was in the kitchen and my cat was outside with this really frantic meowing at the door.  I looked out to see what was her problem.  She had captured and tortured something and she … (81 comments)

searcy ar: I believe Obama read my blog about public works!! Thanks, Mr. President! - 12/07/08 01:41 AM
Did you see the papers?  Did you read or listen to the news?
Our new President Obama says he's going to have a huge increase in public works!!  Provide jobs for people!!
He said there will be investments of record amounts for our vast infrastructure program which would include work on schools, sewer systems, mass transit, electric grids, dams and other public utilities.
He will upgrade computers in schools, expand broadband internet access, make government buildings more energy efficient and improve information technology at hospitals and doctor's offices.
This announcement comes immediately after I printed my old Civilian Conservation Corps discharge paper … (10 comments)

searcy ar: Possibly losing real estate agents in Arkansas - 12/05/08 09:32 AM
The license to practice real estate in the state of Arkansas has to be renewed by September 30 of each year or have a penalty.  Brokers were responsible for collecting for their agents up until last year when it became the responsibility of each agent to renew either on-line or through the mail.  I'm sure that brokers were overjoyed to learn that because the agent might not repay the broker if the broker had already paid for the agent. Bill Williamson, the Real Estate Commission Director, said that as of last week we have 15,072 licensed real estate agents in Arkansas but … (19 comments)

searcy ar: Civilian Conservation Corps 1941 Honorable Discharge. CCC. Will we need this again? - 12/03/08 10:51 AM
While looking through old things I found this aged copy of a discharge from the Civilian Conservation Corps  a part of the plan to employ young people during the Great Depression.  With our country facing such danger right now, it seems appropriate to perhaps display this.
It goes back to a time when the forms were typed in with an old typewriter or written in ink.  This young man was transported from Georgia to California at the age of 17.  What a journey and what an adventure.  Read about the Corps at Wikipedia.  And pray that we never have to go through … (13 comments)

searcy ar: Blume's Eat Shop. Rock Lodge Cafe. Elm and Mulberry. Searcy AR history - 11/30/08 08:38 AM

This is one mysterious photo that says it is a Searcy AR eat shop and Tourist Court but I have never heard of it.  I'm posting this for my Searcy readers to identify it and tell me where it was.  The car's age may help to identify the time frame.  Notice the flat roofed construction which was not a popular thing.  And it appears that the tourist court had covered parking for the cars?

searcy ar: Looks as if this critter is not happy with his manicure. Critter trap Day 1. - 11/25/08 12:30 PM

My blog about critters having to eat a few days ago has inspired me to give you more of the story.  We decided that we really needed to get rid of the skunks who would probably burrow under our house and keep us sprayed or so our friends said they'd do.
So we borrowed a friend's trap in order to catch the skunk.  The skunk came calling but we didn't catch him.  We did catch this opossum (possum in the South).  He seemed to be young and eager and willing to be a star.  He paced back and forth in that cage and … (10 comments)

searcy ar: West Race Baptist Church hosts a free Thanksgiving Meal each year! - 11/22/08 09:56 AM

All along the streets of Searcy Arkansas, White County are signs inviting people to a free Thanksgiving Meal at the church on West Race Avenue.  Several dedicated church members started this free meal several years ago.
It has grown and grown.  The meals will be delivered to folks who can't get out to come to the church.  At the church, turkey and dressing and all the things that should accompany it will be served.
I think it is one of the best things that can be done at this time of year and I applaud them for it.  I'm posting … (4 comments)

searcy ar: All God's critters have to eat, don't they. - 11/21/08 11:22 AM

We live on the edge of the wilds.  Actually we live with the golf course behind us but trust me, there are some WILD WILD people out there, real people swinging golf clubs with uncontrollable balls!
Lots of critters come up to our yard.  Since our cat lives on the back porch the critters come up to eat her leftovers.  Our favorite visitor was the cutie fox.  He'd sneak up and eat almost anything we left out. We started putting out all the leftovers, including bones and the next morning they'd all be gone.  Then a possum came calling.  And then....and … (36 comments)
