searcy ar: Searcy Arkansas has an impressive historic Court House that we love! - 09/27/08 01:42 AM
Searcy Arkansas, White County, has one of the oldest court houses in the state.  It is a beehive of activity everyday despite how old it is.  I'm posting three photos of the building.

The one above is the earliest known photo shortly after its construction in 1870. It later had wings added on the North and South sides.

This one is by our famous photographer, Paula, who did her Girl Scout duty in the 40's and took pictures all around the town. Note it now has attractive wings added.

This one was probably made in the 40's also because we … (9 comments)

searcy ar: Searcy Arkansas city license plates. Did your town have them? - 09/26/08 01:15 AM

These small license plates hang on the wall in my kitchen along with lots of other collectibles (junk) and I have one friend in particular who covets them.  So I called him and asked what the deal was with these little license plates. They measure 10"x3" so they are much smaller than regular license plates.
He said that if you lived in the city limits of Searcy Arkansas, White County, you had to buy a license plate for your vehicle.  They cost $5 and his dad griped a lot about having to buy one just because he was in city limits and … (13 comments)

searcy ar: The copper thieves are still out there. - 09/25/08 02:27 AM
The latest copper theft was a surprise in Searcy Arkansas.  The house had been remodeled by investors and they had found a buyer.  The house was in city limits and not isolated.  One of the investors had been in the house a few days before the close and flipped on the lights and they didn't come on but he checked the breaker and noticed it was off.  That would explain the lights not coming on.
The close took place.  The new owner went to his house, turned on the lights and the breaker and he still had no lights.  Closer examination found that thieves … (23 comments)

searcy ar: Truman Baker Chevrolet. A big name in Searcy Arkansas for years. - 09/24/08 02:21 AM

Here's another one of friend Paula's pictures.  She won a camera and went around town snapping pictures for a Girl Scout project.  It was sometime in the 40's.
This was the Truman Baker corner at the corner of Race and Main.  The Truman Baker Chevrolet dealership took up this corner for many years.  It has been less than 5 years, probably, since they closed it down and moved it to a larger spot near the freeway.  The corner now has a Walgreen's drugstore.  All buildings have been torn down.

searcy ar: Searcy High School Building built in 1908. Picture from the past. - 09/22/08 12:21 AM

My friend Paula took photos with a camera she'd won sometime in the 40's.  The assignment was for Girl Scouts and she was to take photos of buildings in Searcy AR.  She dutifully went around snapping photos and we've been featuring them on this blog.
Here's another one.  It is a school building.  I looked it up in Ray Muncy's "Searcy Arkansas: A Frontier Town Grows Up With America" book and he says it was built in 1908 and called it Searcy High School.  His book, by the way, was written in 1976 to celebrate the American Revolution Bicentennial.  Dr. … (21 comments)

searcy ar: Never visit the grocery store when you're hungry. - 09/21/08 04:39 AM
I made the mistake of going into the grocery store to get a few items and it was near dinner time and I was hungry.  I threw in two porterhouse steaks hoping my spouse would cook them on the grill and went on around to the deli.  There they had some fresh fried catfish.  Well, a couple of pieces of the fried fish would be good for an appetizer, wouldn't they? So I got four pieces of fish. Passing the dessert area in the deli, I decided I'd been good all week and deserved a special dessert.  All of it looked … (18 comments)

searcy ar: Mystery church in Searcy Arkansas not lost at all. It is still there. - 09/20/08 02:51 AM

Yesterday's blog about two mystery churches has been solved. One is still there.  I just didn't recognize it from the picture.
My friends, Don and Paula, quickly found me a current picture of it.  They'll probably send me a book on "Dummie's Blogging" if I don't get better.
But they do understand that being a newcomer with a mere 40 years in a town puts you at a disadvantage.
This church is at the corner of Arch and Elm near downtown, Trinity Parish Episcopal Church, and it is really one of our oldest and most charming churches.  It is still small and hasn't … (16 comments)

searcy ar: Mystery churches in Searcy AR....where did they go? - 09/19/08 12:45 AM
My Searcy friends and I have a thing going.....where did this property "used to be?"
Not having grown up in Searcy and not having roamed the streets of Searcy like my friends Don and Paula and Anita and Ludean, I can't remember these places.
My history is only 40 years so I'm a newcomer! Going through my picture collection, and these were taken by Paula (I think.) for her Girl Scout photography project, I found these churches.
Where were they??

searcy ar: Still standing and still lovely! Old Searcy AR post office on Arch Street. - 09/17/08 02:21 AM

This old building dates back to WWI, according to Dr. Ray Muncy's book called "Searcy Arkansas, A Frontier Town Grows Up With America."  He reports that the Federal Government gave approval for this building as a Post Office when post office buildings were rare in small towns.
Most communities with  a population of less than 3000 at that time picked up their mail at a cage in the corner of a merchandise establishment, said Muncy.  It still occupies a place of importance on Arch Street just about a block from downtown Searcy AR, White County.
I really feel proud of this … (13 comments)

searcy ar: This picture is too sensuous for my home. You can have it. - 09/16/08 12:25 AM

I posted a picture yesterday and will post it again below.  It was this magnificent mansion in Searcy AR, White County, very near downtown, that was torn down many years ago.  At least I think it was this house.  If not this one, one so similar.
Before it was torn down, they held an auction of the things inside.  I went and took my children.  We went all over the house looking at things.  My kids ran up to me and  whispered, "Mom, we found something upstairs that you will love!  Come see!"  So I went to the attic with them … (26 comments)

searcy ar: My own political straw poll, not planned and not pleasant. - 09/14/08 01:47 AM
It was just a pleasant night out with four couples, meaning me and my husband and three other couples.  We had a pleasant chip & dip beginning. We had a lovely meal. Someone, possibly me, made some statement like, "Can you believe that...........?"  And this pertained to politics and political candidates, etc. Bad results!  I was attacked.  I was pounded!  I was drenched and hung out to dry!  I was the only one supporting this particular party!  I was the only one in the room who could see things clearly!  My plea turned to, "I can't believe that none of you … (24 comments)

searcy ar: Spectacular view of downtown Searcy taken from atop the Court House. - 09/13/08 12:29 AM

This old picture is another treasure and I believe it is also from our girl scout photography project done by Paula.  She took them in the 40's.  To take this she must have climbed up to the top of the Court House.  The view she took shows the old Searcy Bank which we've featured before.
What I like best about the picture, however, is the view of the houses barely in the distance.  Little rooftops are everywhere.  House rooftops, not businesses, because Searcy was still a small town and Paula, Don, Ludean, Anita and others could walk downtown at any time!  … (18 comments)

searcy ar: Have you forgotten what it was like to be young? - 09/12/08 01:05 AM
A university student called me about needing a reasonably priced home so that he could live there and possibly rent out rooms to a few friends.  We went to look at a foreclosure that really is in good shape.  It has no fleas!!  It was left clean.  It has been updated.  It has a deck for what I figure would be used for parties. The house is old, though, with no pull-down stair to get in the attic.  The student came with his brother, also in the university but 4 years older.  The younger one wanted to see in the attic.  … (18 comments)

searcy ar: This guy just can't keep his nose out of my business!! - 09/11/08 12:23 AM

Yesterday was a busy day.  I had no  time to check on my favorite bloggers.
The flea house, which still has fleas, is listed again.  I told them that I'd just put a warning on the door to watch for fleas or spray or wear waders! ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!  An agent at the office accused me of being a carrier because she found a flea in our workroom!
I then took photos of another property that has ten acres with a barn and an old house that the owner is redoing.  He has some classy looking stuff in the part … (14 comments)

searcy ar: First Baptist Church, Searcy Arkansas, razed to build a new one. - 09/05/08 12:39 AM

Yesterday we looked at First Methodist Church in Searcy Arkansas.  It has been expanded and expanded and expanded til it covers about a block and a half.  But it still has the original building as we saw photos of it years ago and as it is now.
Today, I'm posting some of Paula's photos of the First Baptist Church which was completely torn down and a new one built.  That makes her old photos, made for a Girl Scout's photography project, more precious.  You know, this was a darned big building in the 40's, which is about the time she … (7 comments)

searcy ar: Searcy Landmark, Old and Now. First Methodist Church. Searcy Arkansas - 09/04/08 02:27 AM

Time for another photo of downtown Searcy Arkansas.  The First Methodist Church has stood at the end of Arch Stree on Main Street for so many years.  It is shown here on an old post card that was sold at Snowden's, a 5 & 10 store that has been closed for a long time.
The church, of course, has continued to grow and stretches out over about one and one/half blocks now.  These two pictures just show what is seen from Arch as you drive toward it.  It has always been a lovely old building.

searcy ar: Searcy Arkansas court square changing. LOOKS GOOD! - 08/26/08 01:59 AM
Comparing the old with the new in Searcy AR, White County, is interesting.  Here's another shot of yesteryear vs. today.
In the old photo, the old Security Bank is on the left and the building in the background is Lee Biggs old office building.  It still is, as a matter-of-fact.  But the upstairs has changed.  It has become private living quarters for a Searcy couple who also has a home in Little Rock and Aspen and no telling where else!
Living upstairs in downtown Searcy may become very fashionable as more of the old buildings are renovated.

searcy ar: Searcy old bank and old one being renewed. - 08/25/08 10:42 AM

Some of you have said you like my old photos and I'm glad.  Some have said to give us the present to compare with the old.  I am doing that today.  First Security Bank used to look like the picture below.  It was added on and covered over many times during the years.  Now it is being restored to some of its former majesty.  It's on the court square and the first picture is courtesy of Paula, who took it as a photography project for the Girl Scouts in the 40's.
I like the way it is looking.

searcy ar: Look what those little brats did! Bad kids! - 08/22/08 01:38 PM

On my way to work, I thought I saw birds on the power line.  Look again!  Not birds.  Shoes!  Two pairs of shoes wrapped around the power line.  Little brat kids have been throwing shoes up in the air!
BUT THEN....BUT THEN....I started thinkin'.....little brat kids playing outside!!  HOORAY!!
They got away from the computer games, the TV, and actually played outdoors.  I can even hear them.
"MMMOMMMM. Brother threw my tennis shoes onto the power line!"
Mom, "Brother, what did you do that for!"
Brother, "I didn't mean to.  I just threw them in the air and they landed … (21 comments)

searcy ar: Gem Cafe, Old Searcy Arkansas 1900 photo. - 08/20/08 12:10 AM

This great old photo of Searcy AR comes from the White County Historical Society collection of photos.  It dates back to 1900 and also looks like a photo from an old Western movie.  This quote below is from the WCHS explanation of the photo.
This scene is from approximately 1900, when Gem Café operated on the southwest corner of Spring and Center in Searcy. Directly behind the café, Giles Walker had the City Meat Market. And, as the giant sign on the side of the building proclaims, Cokes were only a nickel. The name at the top of the … (14 comments)
