searcy high school: Boys & Girls State Searcy AR. Handsome crew. Where are they today? - 12/18/18 11:31 AM

Boys and Girls State Members?  What year?
I used to teach at Searcy High School, Searcy AR, so I remember most of these young people.  I can't read the shirts but I think they were the Boys and Girls State members who got to go to the state meeting and possibly run for office and get a real taste for leadership.  It would be fun for them to perhaps check in and let us know what is going on in their lives.  I remember that my son, Paul, was a selected member one year and these were friends.  He may have taken … (11 comments)

searcy high school: Searcy AR High School Pep Squad of 1939-1949. Old picture. - 08/04/18 12:19 PM

"The way we were" was evidently a feature that was run by the Searcy Daily Citizen many years ago.  How do I know that?  Because I was just going through old things and stumbled upon a bag full of Citizen clippings that I'd forgotten we had.  The papers and clippings were saved by my now deceased mother-in-law, Wyndelene Holmes Duncan, who was a person who saved almost everything.
This picture is not very clear but the names are under it and you can read them.  They even put the married names of the girls so that you'd recognize their changed names.
Of interest … (1 comments)

searcy high school: 1984 Class Reunion of 1954 graduates, Searcy AR. So who do you know? - 07/22/18 07:22 AM

Class reunion 1954 graduates, 30 years later.
So who do you recognize?  I see lots of faces in here that I know or did know bacause some are no longer with us.  You might have fun, if you grew up in Searcy AR, trying to name them.  The picture was loaned to me by a friend for me to place on this blog.  Interesting is the man seated on the front row.  He looks like a builder friend of mine who did a popular Searcy subdivision.  Is it Billy Davis?  And I see Sidney Quattlebaum on the back row.  He was a … (7 comments)

searcy high school: We should have bought that Searcy HS band uniform! - 06/19/18 05:47 PM

A friend and I were visiting an estate sale a few days ago.  The sale was for property from a very well known Searcy AR person who had passed away.  She had grown up in Searcy, moved away for years and years, and then moved back.  There in the house was hanging a white-looking jumpsuit thing with letters on the back.  Searcy High School Band.  It was tiny looking so she must have been a small high school girl when she wore it.
But we passed it by and went on our way.  Then, look what has popped up!  A picture with … (4 comments)

searcy high school: Is it still there? Lion on gym floor Searcy High. 1981 painted. - 12/27/17 11:55 AM

The way it used to be!
Getting your picture in the local newspaper held lots of prestige and I know the parents of these two young artists back in 1981 felt pride when this large picture came out.  My memory is that they were in my Art class when I taught at Searcy High School.  I reviewed some of my saved student art work a day or so ago and came across this clipping.  I think it should be shared.
I am also curious about whether the art work is still there at the center court mark.  Someone check and see if … (2 comments)

searcy high school: Melody Maids 1961 Searcy AR High School girl singers - 08/09/17 01:40 PM

**************************************************************************************************
Looking through old yearbooks is so much fun!  You see folks that you know now when they were very young.  You see fashions at that time.  And here's another fun picture!  The Melody Maids make me think of sewing!  All the dresses are the same and some seamstress had to do them (in my thinking) and lots of moms then were also good at sewing!  Wonder what happened to all those old sewing machines?
You also notice the dresses all being the same length.  The shoes are also matched and the hairstyles are similar.  Now I wonder if Searcy High School still … (6 comments)

searcy high school: Basketball girls 1919 Searcy AR High School photo - 09/06/16 03:33 AM

We did the boys football team from Searcy High School in Searcy AR a few days ago.  Now we have a picture from approximately the same period of a group of girls who evidently made up the basketball team.  And they are also named on the back.
The girls were:  "Seated left to right, Virginia McCain, Flo Alley (sp) Plant,Helen Williams, Lillian Taylor.
Standing, Margie Armstrong, Nell Gray, Margaret Kelly, Francie Kelly and Nolz Lee Plant."
Personally, I love the picture.  It shows how girls follow trends and always have.  Look at the hairstyles.  They are practically the same except for the girl on … (6 comments)

searcy high school: Football players early 1919 Searcy AR High School - 09/06/16 03:22 AM

What a good looking crew!  These young men don't look as uniformed as the football players of today do but they do show personality better.  They even have some names on their shirts.  And they are named on the back of this old picture.
"Front row, left to right are Lee Lason, Joe Dale, Jim Paul Watson, Ray Mason, Boogie (Fletcher) Holleman, and Oris Henry.
Middle Row, Bill Barton, M. P. Jones, Joe Bill  Patterson, Morgan Thomas and Frank Burkett.
Back Row, Jim Findley, Ernerst Butler, Mr. Woodard (Supt.), Lester Mason, J. L. Taylor (Prin.) and Raymond Guthrie.
Seated as played about 1919."
Great picture of … (6 comments)

searcy high school: Searcy AR High School rules 1960. Tuition collected. - 03/21/16 01:30 AM

History is fun, isn't it?
I found this old Searcy High School handbook from 1960.  They were strongly made so it is still in good shape with a pretty red cover.  On pages 10 and 11 I found some rules that made me wonder.  First, I noticed fees that students paid.  I sorta halfway remember that when I got to Searcy in approximately 1967 my kid had to buy her books but that would have been in grade school.  It makes me wonder if in High School the books had to bought PLUS fees were charged.  The book mentions Tuition Students but … (2 comments)

searcy high school: Searcy AR. High school's first girl's tennis team. 1976. - 02/20/15 09:36 PM
Iced in.  Can't get out to go to work!  What do you do?
Well, for one thing it is lots of fun to look at old yearbooks from the local high school.
That's what I did and it brought back lots of memories of which this picture is a great reminder.

The reason this picture is so special and means so much to me is that my daughter is on the left and this was the ONLY page in the whole yearbook with girl's sports.  There were about 40 pages in the yearbook with boy's sports.  Title IX which … (5 comments)

searcy high school: High School yearbooks. Treasures from the past. Now changed? - 01/18/15 09:21 PM

Did you realize that old year books are becoming treasures?
Go to ebay and check them out.  Folks want a lot of money for the historic books.  Of course, since I have not been teaching school or keeping up with anyone in school since 1985 I am not current on what they cost now if they are still published. I did browse one from somewhere around 1990 and was surprised to see that the back part of the book where the yearbook staff always sold ads and where we now find lots of historic photos of the area was filled … (4 comments)

searcy high school: Graduating class at Searcy AR a few years ago. - 12/01/14 09:13 AM

Look at this great group of graduating students at Searcy High School.  This would have been somewhere in the 1950's, I think.  Perhaps some of the Searcy Sleuths are in it?  Or perhaps the Sleuths know some of the students.  There are no dates on this picture and there are no names.  Sadly, we do know the building is gone but the students in front of the building made for perfect composition for this picture.
So how many students would be in our graduating class this year?

searcy high school: 32 year old Lion hiding in my bedroom drawer. Art by Bobby Van Patten. - 05/12/14 11:16 PM
Take some time off.
Check to see what is hiding in your house.
In my case, I found this 32 year old Lion. (No wonder he looks sad.)  It was made by a Searcy artist, Robert Van Patten, for the 1957 Searcy High School class reunion being held in 1982.  He made 57 of them and this one is #27.  That is called a limited edition art work.  Hubby was one of the folks at the reunion and after returning from the party the lion was dropped in a drawer.  It has now resurfaced and is more appreciated.

Bobby Van … (18 comments)

searcy high school: The old Searcy AR Junior High School.....High School? It burned several years ago. - 01/19/14 09:53 AM

I admit that I am confused.  This says Searcy High School.  I remember it as Searcy Junior High, don't I?
When it burned, which I do think I remember, it was used as a Junior High.  Roger Dobbins contributed this photo and it looks as if the school was new at the time of the photo.
So the Searcy Sleuths can perhaps date this photo and tell me if the old High School became the Junior High.  In fact, I think I taught an art class on that upper floor somewhere back in the early 70's.  I do remember teaching … (29 comments)

searcy high school: Sophomore Class Searcy High School, AR. Teacher Lois Thornton. Thanks Don Thompson. - 12/10/12 08:44 AM

Blog buddy Don Thompson bought an old yearbook from ebay that shows the classes in Searcy AR in 1920.  This one is of the Sophomore Class and gives the class roll.  What was significant to him was that one of these lovely young women, second from left middle row, was Lois Thornton who because his teacher at Searcy High when he was a student many years later.  The name of the yearbook was The Reveille.  Somewhere, sometime later it became the Lion.
Here's the closeup of Lois.  She influenced many student's lives.
