white county courthouse: White County Court House with a hand painted look. Searcy AR historic. - 02/17/17 04:10 PM

Well, I'm guilty again.  I bought another historic post card on ebay.
This one of our historic White County AR court house appealed to me because it was different.  It is not a photograph.  It seems to be an artist's rendering of the historic building.  It does not have an artist's signature on it and if it was newer we could say it had been edited to appear as original art work.  The back of the card calls for a one cent stamp so that puts a little age on it.  Perhaps the Sleuths will know something about the card and can … (4 comments)

white county courthouse: 1976 News Article White County's Old Clock Searcy AR - 11/07/16 10:11 PM

Do you like the old clock at the White County Courthouse?
If you do, you will want to read this article that was written in 1976 after the clock had had some repairs done.  It gave the age then as 104 years old.  Add another 40 or so years and it becomes something like 144 years old!  That is an old clock!
I seem to remember that a member of the Robert Joe Dacus family was able to work on this clock but would like a Searcy Sleuth to clear my memory on this.  I don't believe it is working right now.

white county courthouse: A look at White County Courthouse in about 1926. J. B. and Albert Parker. - 12/23/13 02:27 AM

This photograph has been sent to me by Valerie Hunt who wrote this with the picture.
"This is the East side of the courthouse.  My grandfather, J. B. Parker is on the left and his brother Albert on the right.  My great grandfather, Nat F. Parker was a custodian at the courthouse at the time.  The picture is from about 1926 because my grandfather was born in 1922.  If you can enlarge it, check out the car in the background."
The picture is so delightful and you have to really study it and still wonder if you have it right. … (10 comments)

white county courthouse: Great find! Old pictures of First Methodist Church and White County Courthouse Searcy AR. - 08/15/12 11:57 PM
We have a new friend!  Melanie Murphy from Judsonia shared some great pictures with me to share with you.  They are stereoscopic views of mostly Judsonia but perhaps a few from Searcy Arkansas.  She does not have the viewer and we do have a question for the sleuths here because we need an explanation of how the stereoscopic viewers worked.  The pictures scanned nicely, however, and we share two of them here.
First we will do the First United Methodist Church of Searcy with the two views that are used for the viewer....if we had it.

Next let's do a … (25 comments)

white county courthouse: The old court house in Searcy Arkansas had a big party. Get Down Downtown 2010. - 09/27/10 02:28 PM
The court house in Searcy Arkansas dates back to 1869 when bids were taken to build it. Bids were taken and it did cost more than the $25,000 that had been appropriated.  It had the North and South wings added around 1912.  The picture below was sent to me by a blog friend and shows a band some time a LONG time ago posing outside the courthouse.

The court house has been in continuous operation since built and has seen some great festivities and some sad times.  At the Get Down Downtown Festival Sept 25 and 26 people gathered from miles … (14 comments)

white county courthouse: I'm going to visit White County Courthouse tomorrow for two reasons. - 10/19/08 04:14 AM
Our Courthouse is over 100 years old and is still a busy place.  At 10:00 a.m. on lots of Mondays foreclosures are done.  A person comes from Little Rock or somewhere to read that the house at 111 Address St. is up for auction.  He reads the rules of the auction and places his own bid right there in the courthouse lobby.  He usually says that 222 Mortgage Corp bids ____ amount and are there any other bids.  Almost never are there other bids because his bid for the mortgage company includes what is owed including attorney fees. The auctions are advertised … (17 comments)
