bird photography: Dog Watching Birds Watching Dog - 05/04/14 03:43 PM

Dog Watching Bird Watching Dog

This was so funny as the birds were sitting on my new chaise lounge we put on the patio.

Slowy, Coco crept up to the glass door and then the birds were looking back.

They must have sat there for 2-3 minutes before flying off. So funny to watch!

bird photography: Hawk in My Backyard Hunting - 01/16/14 01:23 PM
Hawk in My Backyard Hunting

There he was just sitting there having breakfast. Luckily my little chihuahua was inside.
As you can see there, there are a lot of white feathers there so I think he got a pigeon and sat down to eat. I think Raptor birds are so beautiful and I love to watch them in nature but I hate to see a poor little bird or gopher swept up in their talons. Hawks have great eyesight and are amazing hunters. I love to see them flying in the wind as they just coast for hours and I am … (18 comments)

How Many Birds Can Hang Out on the Lamp Post?

How about 1 bird?

How about 2 birds?

Well, how about 8 birds?
And guess why they are huddled up there....a Red-Tailed Hawk who is lurking over the area looking for a treat? Do they think safety in numbers will save them? Maybe......

Red-Tailed Hawk up in the Clouds

Early this morning on an extremely overcast day, while walking I saw this Red-Tailed Hawk sitting up on a light post. I tried to get closer but he flew off as my dog must have disturbed his food hunt. Viewing nature is so exciting and always a surprise.

bird photography: The History of Scarecrows - 10/22/13 03:11 PM
The History of Scarecrows
The History of Scarecrows

Hungry birds have always been a problem and they eat the crops in the fields. The first recorded history of Scarecrows were over 2500 years ago when the Egyptians and Greeks put them in their fields to protect the wheat from large flocks of quail and other hungry birds.
Immigrants who moved to the United States during the 1800s brought with them a variety of ideas for making scarecrows. In Pennsylvania, German farmers built human looking scarecrows called a bootzamon or bogeyman. His body was a wooden cross and his head was a … (28 comments)

A Killdeer Walked Across my Driveway

I am moving to a slightly rural area so I am experiencing a lot of birds and animals running amok. Today while driving down the street, I noticed this cute little killdeer be-bopping down the sidewalk.

At first I thought it was a roadrunner but the cute stripped forehead helped me determine the specie.

Spring Migration 2013 has Brought New Birds to our Neighborhood

We had an early spring but then it got extremely cold for a few weeks. During this time, we started getting an early influx of birds and three new species I had not seen before. So I am not sure if the birds just stopped in due to it being warmer here in Southern California or what the reason was. All I can say is “Welcome and Stay a While”.

Here is the recipe for the Artificial Nectar.

Use one part ordinary white cane sugar to four parts water.

It's not necessary to boil the water. The microorganisms that cause fermentation don't come from the water; they are transported to the feeder on hummingbird bills. Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

This mixture approximates the average sucrose … (25 comments)
