Watching Birds in My Neighborhood

Yesterday I noticed one of my dogs quietly watching the patio area and her tail was wagging. I snuck outside using the side door and there was a cute little bird sitting on my garden wall.

This bird is called a "Black Phoebe" and has distinctive marking with the two tone coloring and their sharp whistle call.
I had a family of these birds at my previous home and they would have 3-4 nests per year. The entire family of Phoebes will  bring insects to the birds in the nests and the birds fledge in about 14 … (16 comments)

During the Winter Months, Do Not Forget to Feed the Birds

I live in Southern California but even here, the food for birds becomes scarce during the cold winter months. I try to feed the backyard birds and also the hummingbirds who stay for the winter. Last winter, 2013-2014, when there was only about 10 homeowners in my neighborhood so we did not have many birds but this year we have over 50 homeowners and many birds stuck around for the winter.

Here at the 'Plantation on the Lake' I spotted a mother duck and her ducklings; all 6 of them resting under the sign 'Duck Crossing'.

 
They are so cute all huddled up together.

I guess she didn't like me taking her picture so she headed for the water.
 

And here is the happy family enjoying California's warm weather and swimming in the lake.
