central pennsylvania: Good Luck and Superstitions - 03/17/15 09:25 AM
Today we heard it a hundred times, “it’s the luck of the Irish.”  Last week there were mumblings about “Friday the 13th.”

In the past few days, I’ve given some thought to superstitions.  Yesterday (Monday) I celebrated a rather significant birthday, but began the festivities on Sunday – why?  It is believed that you should only celebrate your birthday earlier or on your actual birth day.  If you celebrate it after it is considered very bad luck.  I'm lucky though, since I'm Irish I'm able to celebrate once again.  So if you decide to throw a belated surprise birthday … (21 comments)

central pennsylvania: This May Be the End, But the Work Isn't Finished - 10/29/14 11:35 PM
The end of October is the usual time when frost kills our tender plants. Some parts of central Pennsylvania already have had a light frost, so it looks like it’s the end of our growing season.

It’s with great sadness Cede (the dog) and I picked the last tomatoes, tomatillos, spaghetti squash, basil and eggplants a few days ago.

So, we take a deep breath, relax and get ready for the hard work cultivating and amending the soil.

Before you know it, the Spring seed catalogs will begin arriving in the mail. I must admit, this is the type … (30 comments)

central pennsylvania: Wordless Wednesday: Meet Music Cow Extravaganza - 08/20/14 12:42 PM

Driving back home from the market at the Farm Show, I stopped by Riverfront Park in Harrisburg to take a photo of this beautiful cow, Music Cow Extravaganza.  Anyone who knows me well, is aware of my love for cows.

A little history about the life-sized fiberglass cows you may see in Central Pennsylvania:

In 2004 CowParade Harrisburg was organized as a fundraiser for Central Pennsylvania regional charitable arts organizations.
One Hundred bovines were painted by mostly local artists and put up for auction.  They may be found in all over Central Pennsylvania in such places as train … (35 comments)

central pennsylvania: Flower Power - Don't Let the Summer Be a Bummer in Central PA - 07/12/14 10:53 AM
This is the time of year in Central Pennsylvania we find plant leaves are wilting and failing to pollinate.

It is likely the problem is we are in smack in the middle of the “dog days of Summer.” Central Pennsylvania isn’t a stranger to summer temperatures in excess of 90 degrees.    In an average summer, we get about 25 days in that range. With global-warming, we are probably looking at a higher average as time goes along. We can’t A/C the yard, so what do we do to help our plants thrive and pollinate?

central pennsylvania: Speechless Sunday: Dogs are the Only Ones Not Sick of Winter - 02/16/14 01:50 PM

Our Leos, Dreyfus and Mercedes, have a great enthusiasm for the winter wonderland that dumped nearly two feet of snow on Central Pennsylvania this past week. They are so eager to get outside at daybreak to run, jump, prance and romp through the piles and mazes of snow.  Over the last several days, Dreyf and Cede have given us more joy than you could ever imagine, -- the one thing about the snow that continues to make us smile.

central pennsylvania: How Quickly Do You Respond to Leads? - 02/15/14 09:33 AM

Need for Speed When Responding to Leads

How quickly do you respond to a client leads, whether they are online leads, sign inquiries, advertising calls, listing calls or emails?

From my own experience, getting back to people within the hour is vital. If not, they will have gone elsewhere by the time you call them "later."

With today's short attention spans and "need an answer now" mode of business, the “need for speed” is critical. We’ve all heard the saying about “the early bird getting the worm.”  The same applies when it comes to … (71 comments)

central pennsylvania: What is the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day? - 05/23/13 12:37 PM
Visit Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery this weekend.  The Memorial Service is 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, 2013.

Each Memorial Day, people thank my husband for his service in the military,  --  “Memorial  Day” isn’t for him, but he always graciously accepts with a  “thank you.”
Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  Memorial Day and Veterans Day have everything to do with honoring the living and the deceased. Both observances are intended to honor military personnel, but Veterans Day pays homage to all Americans who have worn the nation’s military uniforms, both living and dead, while Memorial Day is … (29 comments)
