episcopal: Sad Update on Austin Street Shelter - 03/15/13 09:48 PM
A few years back, Patty and I volunteered to help serve meals at Dallas’ Austin Street Shelter.
Patty’s been a licensed professional counselor (a psychotherapy designation) for more than thirty years, and had a very active practice until she took semi-retirement a couple of years back.
I wanted to tell you that up front so that you would know that there was some education and experience that backed the piece I wrote for Active Rain just after our first visit there.  Here's that AR piece.

Since then the priest who founded and operated the shelter for its entirety, the Rev. … (2 comments)

episcopal: I'm Always Prepared to Answer "The Call." - 02/19/13 09:02 AM
It’s interesting how often people borrow my religion and me.
Let me tell you, I’m what is known as a Cradle Episcopalian.  As you can guess, that means I’ve always been a member of the Episcopal Church.
But while I do my best to live the highest spiritual life that I can, I glide through life pretty much not mentioning my spirituality unless someone asks me about it.
Nevertheless, I cannot tell you how many families of agnostics have asked me to do their relative’s funeral service.  I’ve never turned anyone down.  I figure it will become my show and I … (0 comments)

episcopal: I Believe This Is the Most Profound Message from Jesus. - 02/13/13 12:27 PM
As I write this posting, it is Shrove Tuesday (also called "Fat Tuesday).
"Shrove" is the past tense of "shrive."
In the main “shrive is the practice of confessing our sins to God, providing penance, (which is where “giving up something from Lent” comes from) which will then result in our absolution (forgivness) from sin by God.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent.
The Episcopal Church Lectionary pro-vides this Gospel reading for Shrove Tuesday.
I believe it is one of the most profound messages from Jesus.

I’m feeling pretty pleased with myself this morning.  This is of course the Feast of All Saints, and I have actually found a bona fide ‘All Saints’ Day’ joke.  It’s not a great joke but it’s the real thing.  Want to hear it?

An old time pastor was galloping down the road, rushing to get to church on time. Suddenly his horse stumbles and pitches him to the ground.  In the dirt with a broken leg, the pastor … (0 comments)

THE MASTER'S HAND
By Realtor Bill Cherry
I honestly don't think people act as civilly as they did in my mom and dad's time.  Not even as they did when I was growing up.  In fact, not even as they did when I was a young businessman.
Somewhere along the way, the once precious sanctity of getting along with our neighbors seems to have, in many instances, defaulted to determining resolution to disagreements by who can afford to be the biggest bully.
It's a means that is indisputably borne in despicable effusion.
There was a very fine attorney who served the … (6 comments)

episcopal: EVENSONG - A SERVICE DATING BACK TO THE MID-1600S - 10/22/07 09:19 AM
The Church of the Incarnation is an Episcopal church in downtown Dallas with a membership of some 5,000.  The church is of gothic revival architecture.  Congregants worship among glorious stained glass windows and the superior fullness of an organ that boasts more than 4,000 pipes.
With frequency, members of other denominations join Incarnation members for a service held each Sunday at 5 PM.  It is known as Evensong.
The tradition of Evensong, which dates back to the middle 1600s, is totally sung by Incarnation’s exceptional choir.  The big organ’s background accentuates the loveliness of the service.
The Holy Eucharist, as a short additional service, … (2 comments)

episcopal: Austin Street Shelter with Harry and Bubba - 09/28/07 10:12 PM
Carrying in loads of aluminum trays of noodles loaded with chicken, mountains of green salad and hot vegetables, fresh rolls by the hundreds along with multiple gallons of milk, orange juice and lemonade, and package after package of cookies for dessert, we arrived at the Austin Street Shelter within the deepest of the bowels of downtown Dallas.
Two hours before, our washing machine had frozen on it annual "won't run after it's filled itself to the brim with water" position.  That had been the last straw for Patty and me as we had tried to traverse through the one crisis … (14 comments)
