hurricane ike: NEW BOOK: GALVESTON - A CITY ON STILTS - 12/26/08 10:45 AM
There is a new historical pictorial titled:Galveston: A City on Stilts (General History: Texas) by Jodi Wright-Gidley and Jennifer Marines (Paperback - Oct 13, 2008)It is primarily a selection of photos taken by a professional photographer named Zeva B. Edworthy, who lived in the city for about eleven years after the famous 1900 Storm. The photos were inadvertently found by his daughter, Judith Wray. She had stored them along with other of her mother's possessions after her mother's estate was settled some years ago. When she found them recently, she donated them to the Galveston County Historical Museum.

hurricane ike: HERE TO HELP -- A SIGN ON A HOME'S PORCH IN IKE-RAVAGED GALVESTON - 11/27/08 02:18 PM

This large banner is not hanging from the gallery of an Episcopal Church.  It's hanging on the front porch of one of Galveston's famous 19th Century Victorian homes, a private home that has survived many hurricanes.
And it came through one more time as Hurricane Ike totally ravaged more than fifty percent of the homes, businesses, schools and hospitals on Galveston Island.  Many residents -- some educated estimates are one-third of the population -- have left and promised not to return.
Interestingly, the home in this picture is the private residence of The Reverend Ronald D. Pogue, D.Min., who is the … (2 comments)

hurricane ike: HURRICANE IKE MEETS THE FAMOUS GAIDO'S RESTAURANT - GALVESTON - 10/01/08 09:48 AM
Since 1911, the Gaido family has owned and operated Galveston's most famous seafood restaurant.  For at least the past half-century it has been on the corner of 39th Street and Seawall Boulevard.
Millions of meals are served there every year.  Generations of tourists come to the island every year for a dual-purpose -- to enjoy the beach and to eat at Gaido's.
When Hurricane Ike struck Galveston in mid-September, the devastation was like nothing that has been experienced there since the famous 1900 Storm.  Fortunately early evacuation combined with the island's seawall saved most from injury and loss of life.

hurricane ike: New Galveston Insight: Another Hurricane Ike Legacy - 09/25/08 04:23 PM
Since World War II, Galveston has had increasing numbers of federally funded housing projects for the poor.  One reason is that the city has a huge state medical school and hospital known to Galvestonians as UTMB but that stands for University of Texas Medical Branch.
Loads of charity patients are treated there every year, in fact they move there from all over Texas for free treatment.  And it's now to the point that the hospital is continually finding itself in the red and looking for more money.
WELL HERE'S WHAT THIS BLOG POST IS REALLY ALL ABOUT:  You are probably aware … (0 comments)

hurricane ike: HURRICANE IKE & LIFE ON GALVESTON ISLAND -- TOTALLY INCONGRUENT - 09/13/08 11:40 PM
Galveston, Texas is a barrier island.

And it is where I was born and lived for most of the first 65 years of my life; the last three in Dallas.
I know the island so well -- its past and its present -- that for 10 years I wrote its history and its people's stories through weekly columns for the Galveston paper.  And I told them on camera for a Houston TV station's news reports.
I continue to write them for the monthly editions of Texas Escapes magazine.
My book, Bill Cherry's Galveston Memories (Van Jus Press 2000) has sold thousands.
