Before digital radio transmitters and receivers, and before many AM radio stations were allowed by their FCC license to increase their transmitting power, there was a phenomena that was called DXing. Since AM radio signals are sent to the heavens, bounce off of the ionosphere and then come back to reach the radio receivers, often during the nighttime radio signals from a station would reach outside of its intended coverage.
