Many years ago, as a fourteen-year old junior high student, I talked the owner of one of my hometown radio stations into letting me have a weekly, Saturday afternoon program.
I quickly learned that the money in radio was a combination of commercial sales and talent fees.  Being on the air gave you the "star power" you needed to make the sale.

Before digital radio transmitters and receivers, and before many AM radio stations were allowed by their FCC license to increase their transmitting power, there was a phenomena that was called DXing.
Since AM radio signals are sent to the heavens, bounce off of the ionosphere and then come back to reach the radio receivers, often during the nighttime radio signals from a station would reach outside of its intended coverage.

            There was a time when American Airlines was one of the most respected passenger carriers in the United States.  I'm talking about a time when fares were regulated and the number of direct flights was far less than today.
            In the 1950s, American Airlines advertising and marketing consultants came up with a brilliant idea.  The company would broadcast a nightly program on the biggest radio station in each market the carrier served.  Dallas, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C. 
            The list goes on.
