He holds the record for the most highly decorated enlisted man in the United States Navy. He was born in Fort Mill, South Carolina but raised in Darlington, South Carolina after his parents moved two months after he was born. He finished high school in St. John's High School and married Elaine Weaver. They had five children and seven grandchildren.

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) an occasional singer and a fulltime jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer. He was one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time and made big contributions to the music industry. He built the virutouso style of Roy Eldridge by adding layers of complex harmony which was unknown at that time in the jazz industry.

Althea Gibson (August 25, 1927 – September 28, 2003) was the first African-American woman to be part of the world tennis tour and to win the first gold in Grand Slam in the year 1956. She is sometimes called the Jackie Robinson of tennis for breaking the color barrier and she was one of the best tennis players in the world. Gibson is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
She was originally from Silver, Clarendon County in South Carolina, born to her parents Daniel and Annie Bell Gibson. She had a brother known as Bubba and her sister was Mildred.

John Gaillard (September 5, 1765 – February 26, 1826)
Born in the St. Stephen District in South Carolina, Gaillard was of Hunguenot descent. He was a senator who was elected to replace Pierce Butler. During the time he was a senator, he voted for the war of 1812. He then served as a President pro tempore at the Senate in part of the 11th congress. After the death of Vice President Elbridge Gerry he became the acting vice president.

David du Bose Gaillard (1859–1913), the army engineer who was responsible for the construction of the Panama Canal.
He was born in Manning, South Carolina and graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in the year 1884. He was placed in charge of the construction of the Canal in the year 1907. Unfortunately he died of  a brain tumor in 1913 just months before the canal's completion. There was a part of the Canal named after him called Gaillard Cut.

He is the very first bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of the Upper South Carolina. Born to his parents James Finlay and Marian Ponsonby Gun who were orignally from Scotland but moved to South Carolina a few years before he was born.
