Since last Sunday my wife has overseen a folk art camp here in Kinderhook. The teacher, Cynthia from Ohio, originally from Texas drove the eight hours to help students with the art of rug hooking. Now in it's 14th year the students arrive on a Sunday and stay until after lunch on Thursday. Each student, men and women select a design drawn on linen usually (the first rugs were done on old burlap bags) and a color selection is worked on. Cynthia starts at 9am and goes right thru until 3PM helping beginners and those who have been doing it for … (0 comments)

hudson valley: ICE ICE BABY here in Kinderhook NY - 01/20/09 04:48 AM

All the attention on Broad Street in Kinderhook NY this weekend was because of the spectatular display of ice creatures on the front yard of John Hanaham.
John's friend, Haminio is a graduation of culinary school and has been doing ice sculptures for quite awhile. He started out with one or two last year, but this season he went all out. There are eight now. This morning they were all hold OBAMA signs and American flags. Quite a sight for Rebuplicans and Democrats alike.
The cold weather has helped to maintain the statues. My favorite is the lion, being a … (0 comments)

The Town of Stuyvesant Recreation Committee is hosting a snowshoe walk at the Ken Hummel Memorial Park. Ken was a great guy and the town never forgets how important he was to the community. He was a politician, carpenter, father, husband, Library Board member. He had a great sense of humor,he was fair, honest, and a friend of mine. The Park is on Sharptown Road in Stuyvesant. Join local community members for the walk, stargazing, looking for nocturnal wildlife, a bonfire, and warm refreshments. Bring snowshoes or cross-country skis and a flashlight. Beginners are welcome. A limited number of snowshoes will be … (0 comments)

hudson valley: Don't be a couch potatoe in Kinderhook, NY - 01/06/09 02:28 AM
With another snow storm on the way Wednesday it looks like another day off from school. Here is something to think about while we sit infront of the fire. Get up and start running. Every year the Kinderhook Memorial Library forms a team to run the Kinderhook Bank's OK-5K run in June. But what about the rest of the year? Would you like to be part of a friendly active running club? It would be a great way to meet new people in the area if you have just moved here and it would be good for your health. The Kinderhook … (0 comments)

hudson valley: Winter Nights - 12/27/08 06:59 AM

After the ice storm canceled our Kinderhook Candle lite Night, and left us with no power, the snow storm canceled the Winter Walk in Valatie and left no one on the streets. Now today another snow storm is making Columbia County a Winter wonderland and the ski resorts are so happy with this white gold. Our village square is a picture from a Currier and Ives post card. Most of the small retail stores are opened, the Christmas bells in the trees continue to shine as our two man public works team work hard to clear the parking spaces. … (1 comments)

hudson valley: Snow shovels, take your places. *********** - 11/20/08 01:33 PM
The temperature here in Columbia County will not be out of the 30's during the day this week and the nights will be down in the teens!!!! Snow flakes will fall occasionally, while the ponds will have the first sheet of ice on them in the mornings. A sudden snow squall is not out of the question. The bird feeders should be filled on a steady routine now. Once you start them you need to continue. The birds count on you and don't know where to look if they are depending on you to eat during the winter. Most of the corn … (0 comments)

hudson valley: Villages are connecting via sidewalks - 08/13/08 12:53 PM
Today the Mayor stopped at the office to tell us the Villages of Kinderhook and Valatie will be connected soon by a new sidewalk. This will be great for senior citizens who can expand their early morning walking routine. Also the many runners we have will be able to run safe on the sidewalks and not in the road. I hope the bikers we have will take their turn too. Street lights will be coming next I am sure. We already share some of our road crews with Valatie and some day maybe the septic will be shared. Kinderhook, old as it … (1 comments)
