homeowner hints: Fall Back...Daylight Savings Times Ends this Weekend - 10/31/08 02:20 AM
This Saturday night, before you go to bed, be sure to set your clocks back one hour, as we end Daylight Savings Time.
Sunday morning, check your computers, PDAs and other technology tools to make sure they have all been updated accurately.  If they have not changed their time overnight, then check to see if there are available updates to download to adjust for this new Daylight Savings Time schedule.  It may make sense to check for those updates before Sunday.
While you're at it, take this opportunity to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors.  Replacing the smoke detector batteries … (3 comments)

homeowner hints: Oil Prices - 10/14/08 02:30 AM
It's that time of the year again.  At the bus stop each morning, we all discuss oil prices and what each company is charging...
These are not fun conversations these days.
I received an oil delivery this morning.  I looked at the ticket and saw a price of $3.55 per gallon.  Ouch!  I called around to different companies and found pricing around $3.20 per gallon.  A little better.
So I then called my current company.  As I started my question, he said, "No!  No!  No!  Do not look at the price on the ticket from the delivery truck!"  Apparently, being a customer … (2 comments)

homeowner hints: Alternative Heating Options for your Connecticut Home - 07/24/08 07:43 AM
I heat my home with oil - I have a hydro-air forced warm air heating system with three zones. When I built my home three years ago, has I suspected the price of oil would more than double in three years, I might have considered different heating options.
Back in 2005 when I built the home, I contracted for oil for about $2.05 per gallon.  This past year, I've been paying $3.59 per gallon.  Now, I'm hearing quotes of $4.70 - $5.19 per gallon.  Ouch.
Just by conservation - and the fact that now all of our kids are in school during … (25 comments)

homeowner hints: Spring Forward This Weekend - 03/07/08 05:22 AM
This Saturday night, before you go to bed, be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour, as we begin Daylight Savings Time.
While you're at it, take this opportunity to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors.  Replacing the smoke detector batteries twice each year - coinciding with when we change our clocks - ensures that you will be protected in your home in the event of fire.

homeowner hints: Sellers: Buyers are Watching HGTV. Are You? - 06/23/07 01:11 PM
I've been busy lately, showing lots of homes here in New Fairfield and Danbury, Connecticut to many buyers.
Each of my buyers have their own particular needs.  Number of bedrooms.  Price.  Location.  Single family home or condo.  Each is unique.
But, lately, they all have one thing in common:  They have been watching HGTV.
These buyers know that:
Homes need Curb Appeal Homes must be Designed to Sell It takes staging to Get it Sold Buyers are watching.  Buyers know what it takes to sell a house today.
And every single one of my buyers these past few weeks has asked … (14 comments)

homeowner hints: Sellers: Spring Clean-Up for Your Yards - 04/22/07 02:17 AM
Spring has finally arrived here in Connecticut.  That means it's time to clean up your yards, especially if you're marketing your home for sale.  Winter can be tough on our lawns and our gardens.  A little work now can lead to great results for the rest of the spring and summer.  If you're selling your home, a little work now will make your home stand out from the competition.
Take a walk around your yards.  Pick up and sticks and branches that have fallen off of the trees over the winter.  Remove any rocks that have heaved up through the soil.  … (7 comments)

homeowner hints: Selling with Pet Odors - 03/12/07 04:49 AM
REALTOR Magazine posted a great article online today titled, Seven Ways to Get Rid of Pet Odors.  One item they left off, that I've heard rave reviews about, is Nature's Miracle, to remove smells from pet accidents.  Nature's Miracle is readily available in most pet stores.
When selling your home, it is imperative to remove any and all odors, including those pesky pet odors. Pet bedding should be washed frequently.  Litter boxes should be cleaned at least daily, if not throughout each day.  If a pet has been having "accidents" on your carpets, it may be best to replace the carpeting prior … (5 comments)

homeowner hints: Spring Forward: Daylight Savings Time - 03/09/07 01:01 AM
This Saturday night, before you go to bed, be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour, as we begin Daylight Savings Time three weeks early this year.
While it is thought that starting Daylight Savings Time early will save energy (if it stays light later in the day...that's less electricity we will need to use to light our homes and businesses...), there are dissenting opinions which doubt that any substantial energy savings will actually occur.
Sunday morning, check your computers, PDAs and other technology tools to make sure they have all been updated accurately.  If they have not changed their time overnight, … (0 comments)

homeowner hints: Sellers: Shovel Your Snow - 02/21/07 04:47 AM
It's been a week since our last snow storm.  Yet, just yesterday when I was showing homes to buyer clients of mine, we encountered a home that has not shoveled their driveway, the walkway to the front door, nor the front steps.
This home is on a narrow "country" road, so parking in front of the home created an obstacle course for neighbors to get around our cars.  Not a great way to create neighborhood unity.
Given the last storm was a mixture of sleet, freezing rain and snow, and that we've experienced mostly sub-freezing temperatures since then (with the wonderful … (4 comments)

homeowner hints: Wintry Weather Arrives in Connecticut - 02/14/07 01:04 AM
We were originally expecting 12-18 inches of the white fluffy stuff we've seen so rarely this winter.  Instead, we've woken up to about 1-2 inches of a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain.  It's nasty outside, and last I heard, we can expect this to continue all day.
The kids are off from school today (NBC30 reports 658 closings or delays as of this writing).  I can't see the road from my house, so I have no idea if the roads are clear or safe.  But with the continuing sleet falling and the winds blowing, I figure it's best if we stay … (3 comments)
