dallas green streets: Do Compact Florecent Bulbs Really Last? Try SEVEN YEARS! - 05/26/11 08:36 PM
Tonight my partner, Warren, and I took a walk around our Carrollton, Tx neighborhood and coming home I discovered that the outdoor light on my flagpole was out.  Actually, it went out about a week or so ago but I've just forgotten to change it.
So I went out to the garage and got another CLF Spot light and went to change out the bulb.  The one I removed had a small note written on it in marker.  It read MAY 04.   We moved here in July of 03 and put the pole in around September of that year.  The first … (3 comments)

dallas green streets: Green Your Home Meeting - January 4th 2011 - 12/27/10 06:35 PM
Every month I hold a dinner meeting for people interested in Greening up their homes. We've had moderate turn out (between 4 to 10 people per meeting). We meet at a local diner (Cafe Brazil in Carrollton, TX) and share green ideas and business contacts. We talk about everything from simple projects like light bulbs or more expensive things like solar panels. Home owners need to reduce their energy costs and I hope this can help. I try not to be concerned with meeting size. I think that the people who need help are the ones that show up. If it's … (2 comments)

dallas green streets: Here comes my report card - aka The Electric Bill - 12/20/10 06:02 PM
As a GREEN Realtor I really strive to live the life and walk the walk. As such, I record and graph my utility usage so I can show what efforts are working and what efforts are not.
From 2004 to 2009 we reduced our electrical usage 41% . This is great but I still think we can do better. Plus, if we can get our usage down to 15,000 kwh annually solar or wind alternatives become more cost effective.

I was on track to bring our usage down to 17,000 or 18,000 this year and then life got in the … (3 comments)

dallas green streets: Irving Think Green festival on Saturday - 10/17/10 05:10 PM
Texas Pride Realty had a booth this weekend at the Irving Green Festival. The booths were free which was a nice surprise and the attendance was about 100 people. In 3 hours I met two buyers who were considering green options in housing and I made contact with lots of other people who took our information and kept my card.
I've been doing booths every month this year. I think I've done 15 or 18 so far this year. It has been a great way to meet people, networking with buyers and sellers directly. So far it hasn't led to … (2 comments)

dallas green streets: A Greener way to do Flyers - a work in progress - 06/05/10 01:10 PM
For a long time I have been frustrated with flyers. They get taken by the neighbors, stolen by kids or destroyed by rains. It seems like a waste of paper, yet sellers like to have the information in front of the house and drive-by buyers want to know about the house.
I'm trying two solutions at the same time. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK:
Solution 1 -- All the signs in my brokerage say at the bottom: To see this listing go to m.TexasPrideRealty.com which is version of our website set up for mobile phone browsers.
Solution 2 -- I … (4 comments)

dallas green streets: New R50 insulation added to our 1983 home. - 05/22/10 04:47 PM
This week we had insulation added to our home. We went from 6 inches of insulation, installed when the house was built in 1983, to 20+ inches of insulation with a radiant barrier. This should save us a lot of money over the years. That said, we have a vaulted ceiling so there's still other solutions to find. A lot of our roofline doesn't have attic over it.

Be sure your soffit vents stay clear. Looks like we're inside a Jiff-pop.

BEFORE with 6 inches of old insulation and no barrier

We went with the film because it offers 99% … (9 comments)

dallas green streets: The Dallas Home & Garden Show - March 2010 - 03/09/10 06:41 PM
Warren and I went to the Dallas Home & Garden Show last weekend and I took about 200 pictures to document the day. There are a lot of different vendors at the show and I tried to get shots of all the booths. I've spent two days trying to tag the photos but I still have some more to do, but I'm going to post this blog and catch the others later.

dallas green streets: Hangin' it out to dry - Saving money with Solar! - 03/06/10 08:20 PM

Every year we try to take measures to reduce our electrical load. In six years in our house we have brought our bills down 41%.
Last year I invested $65 and purchased an umbrella-style clothesline. Now I know some of you won't want to do this, but we saved about $350 last year not running our 220 electric dryer and also not putting that dryer heat into the house.

Plus it did me good to have to get up off the sofa every hour and go outside and hang the laundry. I tend to put things out in … (10 comments)
