Times are tough - we've all heard that over and over. The Charities in our communities are receiving fewer donations because of everyone tightening their belts and purse strings. The numbers of those in need are growing as the resources to help them shrinks.
As the winter holidays approach at breakneck speed, we are running around trying to connect with friends and family. Business planning seems to take a backseat and we say "I'll get to that after the first of the year."

Seven months ago I left an established career to work for free. Why would anyone in their right mind do that? Especially in today's economy. Because something in my heart convinced me to "Pay it Forward" - that the cause would justify the sacrifice and in the long run - it would make me a better person and reward me with new opportunities.

Veterans Day comes and goes and few of us take the time to really reach out and say "Thank You." Few of us realize what they have gone through to protect our freedoms and our families. Many Vets won't even talk about the terrors of war and wouldn't claim to be a hero. But they are - all of them, past and current Military personnel.

Fall is the time of year of harvest, stowing things away and hunkering down for the winter. The old phrase of "Fall back and Spring forward" is a reminder for our clocks and smoke detector batteries. But too many people take the phrase "fall back" in the fall too literally!

Keep our Fire Fighters in mind this week as we collectively remind ourselves how to keep our families and our homes safe from fires happening. There are many little things we can do so check out their website (www.nfpa.org) and apply the knowledge to your homes and your customers homes too.
Also, take the time to stop buy your local fire department to thank them for their service to the community (a basket of cookies or fruit wouldn't hurt either). Labor Day is the "day we've all earned" right? Well, while you're out enjoying this free time, remember a couple things. That freedom in general came at a price. Our fallen military heroes are why we have a free America and safe communities to raise our families. And while you're out this weekend - notice the Police, Firefighters, EMT's and National Guard that are out there working. Take a moment to thank them - because they rarely hear it. It will mean alot to them - and you'll feel good too.

Homes for Heroes has heroes from across the country logging on to our website for assistance. They are all looking for help in buying or selling a home. The Homes for Heroes program was conceived by a family of Realtors after the 911 tragedy as a way to give back to those who do so much for us. The program grew from state to state. Homes For Heroes was created by a group of Realtors after 9/11 as a way to give back to the Military, Police and Fire Fighters in the community for risking their lives to protect our country and communities. After a report on the CBS Early Show, heroes from across the country started contacting the Minnesota group. Now Homes For Heroes has a website and heroes in 46 states. The problem is we need realtors and lenders in those states to help these heroes. This seems odd to me. I write a blog about helping heroes in the community and I got a blog comment that is advertising something to do with shoes. What's up with that? Shoes? How do these people even get on this site. Isn't there a shoe blogging zone somewhere else out there in cyber space? Maybe they thought ActiveRain meant a good place to advertise rubber boots.

Father's Day was another opportunity to Talk with my dad about what he remembers about being in the Services. As a young man in Minnesota - he sold his tractor and nine cows and joined the army. Patriotism ran very deep back then. Now days there are also these men and women who give all for their country. Recently a Realtor posted a blog regarding her interpretation of our Homes For Heroes marketing program. And everyone is entitled to there views. This Realtor must already have a program in place to give back to the community that works. Some Realtors are looking for a way to give back and differentiate their company from the many others in their community.
