The cat's out of the bag! Or, should we say 'the bagel's out of the bag'? The iconic, community loved, BagelWorks, is up for sale. Initially, we kept it (the name of the business) under wraps so as not to alarm anyone and keep things 'business as usual'. Our biggest hope in doing so was that an uneventful transaction would take place and whomever purchased the business wouldn't change a thing. Because, well, we love the place exactly how it is. Catapalooza, live music, crowds, and free give-a-ways, this event is like many the Bozeman community celebrates only its target audience is very specific to the 2500+ students arriving back onto campus this week. Businesses are showcasing what they can specifically offer to students: Costco is here with Ramen Noodles and Pizza promotions, banks are scattered around to assist the education of saving versus spending, and the largest majority of tables set up are school sponsored clubs, teams, and organizations.

Spring is just around the corner! Biking is one of the most popular ways of celebrating the warmer weather (although I have seen some bikes out there no matter the temperature or amount of snow…). So great news for all you bikers out there! The already comprehensive trail system throughout the city is looking to get upgraded.
If getting out of Bozeman is your ideal form of escapism on a bike, Hyalite Canyon has trails for both road and mountain biking. Check out the Gallatin Valley Bicycle Club website at www.gallatinvalleybicycleclub.org for additional information.

Coming to Gallatin County Fairgrounds is a 35,000 sqft, $4.5 million indoor ice arena to be used all year long. Valley Ice Garden, the only other indoor rink in the area, closed its door in 2006 and ever since volunteers have been raising money to construct the rink. bozeman community: Keeping Out the Chill

Bozeman’s Warming Shelter for our local homeless opened this November, the day after Thanksgiving. Located in an old office building at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, this winter has seen several improvements to the Shelter. Indoor plumbing, additional bedding, and a small TV mark the minor upgrades that serve the 18-24 people who can accommodate the space.
“We’re happy to have a place for people to go, a place to refer individuals and families that have no other options, and that is safe and healthy,” said Stephanie Gray, youth director at the nonprofit Human Resource Development Council.

What Happens to All the Trees?
New Years comes with a daunting task… un-decking the halls. Here in Bozeman, we are trying to ease the impact of this process by finding a productive use for all the brittle Christmas trees. Sites have been set up all around Bozeman to collect the trees so that they can be taken to the local landfill and used as “Merry Mulch.” This compost will be spread across the acres of garbage to encourage the reclaiming of the land by native grasses.
