about me: Cayamo - The Music Cruise
- 01/30/14 08:15 AM
For the second week of February, I'll be on a cruise from Miami to Tortola and around the Caribbean. Now, I wouldn't go on an ordinary cruise. This is no ordinary cruise. Cayamo is music 24/7. The musicians this year include Lyle Lovett, Brandi Carlile, Kris Kristofferson, Ricky Skaggs, Buddy Miller, Todd Snider, Jim Lauderdale, David Bromberg, Chuck Cannon, Kat Edmonson, Elephant Revival and about twenty other acts. Past years when I've been on the cruise have included Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Patty Griffin, Nancy Griffith, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Shawn Colvin and a lot more. The main acts perform concerts at (3 comments)

about me: Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish
- 01/19/14 12:16 AM
Dateline: Saturday night, Plymouth MA Subject: Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish These guys have been rocking the South Shore and the Cape and Islands for years! I had no idea they were playing nearby last night until I walked past a sandwich board on the street in Plymouth announcing that they were playing in the back right then. I had to go in. Had to. So many good summer memories from those wistful days of youth. Brought it all back. And it still feels good! The dancing crowd was filled with kids from 20 to 70. He's such a great (8 comments)

I just showed a house that is being well-lived in. That is, there is stuff everywhere because the occupants are enjoying life. We looked past it, knowing why, and loving it. There's always something that grabs me in each place I go. This permanent piece of artwork was hung on the chimney. Such good words to hold.

about me: Orchid
- 12/29/13 08:00 AM
Orchid I used to grow orchids like this. I didn't grow this orchid or take this picture, but I wanted to share my friends' skills in those two areas with you all. Orchids grow landing pads on which bees and other pollinators are encouraged to alight. As they pull back, after injesting the sweet, sticky pollen at the end of the runway (here, the pollen is yellow and red), the pointed hook hanging from above the opening breaks off and sticks in the pollinator's back. This is what is carried to another flower to pollinate it, and perpetuate the species. (13 comments)
I'm so blessed to be able to see all of my immediate family and quite a few other people I love and care about during this last week of the year. For me, the reason for the season is these two kids, my son and my brother's daughter. We'll all be together in my car when we leave my mom's in D.C. and drive to my dad's in NYC later this week. Thank you all for making this first year on Active Rain a good one for me, both professionally and personally. Quite a few of (15 comments)

Eilean Donan, the clan castle of the MacKenzies, sits at the meeting point of Loch Long, Loch Duich and Loch Alsh. It's origin is shrouded in the mists of time (okay, about 600 C.E.). The first fortified stronghold was established in the reign of Alexander II (1214-1250). In 1263 Alexander III gave the castle to Colin Fitzgerald, son of the Earl of Desmond and Kildare (later to become MacKenzies) as a reward for services in the Battle of Largs. The famous battle culminated in the defeat of the Norwegian King, Haco. Following (4 comments)
about me: When things are good, things are really good
- 10/24/13 07:47 AM
When things are good, things are really good I sing-song that title as if it were a Dr. Seuss rhyme! I can't point to just one thing. The last couple of weeks have been "better and better". Great clients, great opportunities, great friends, and great developments all around. It's about time. I've been up, I've been down. Up is better! Would you let me know if things are really good for you?

about me: My flight in the cockpit of a commercial airline!
- 10/21/13 01:24 PM
Well I just had a fabulous evening! My most excellent client, Todd, a JetBlue captain, told me he had to make a maintenance check-out flight on an Airbus A320, a commercial aircraft that's about the equivalent of a Boeing 737 with a bigger cockpit, in a few hours, and asked if I had time to join him! You bet I did! I learned to fly about six years ago, but I never flew anything except a single-engine Cessna. My client is former Navy pilot who is now a captain for JetBlue. I had the enormous pleasure of learning much more about (21 comments)

The best baseball game ever - Red Sox v. Tigers, ACLS Game 2, 2013 The single most exhilarating event I've ever witnessed in baseball was last night's grand slam home run in the 8th inning by Big Papi, David Ortiz, designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox. I haven't come down yet.
On the first pitch, with bases loaded, Papi unleashes. Fenway Park went absolutely berzerk. The whole inning just kept setting up for this incredible moment. . . . Here's six seconds of me and Grayson just before the game! The first seven innings were just depressing. After losing (5 comments)
about me: Keep the beard?
- 10/09/13 06:01 AM
The biggest post-World Series decision the world must make is: Should I keep the beard I grew in support of the Red Sox as they pursued their quest for, and inevitable acquisition of, the title of 2013 World Series Champions? The votes are coming in. I'm surprised there isn't a clear answer! Help me. Help the world. Vote thumbs up or down on my YouTube video page! And thank you for doing your part to make the world a more beautiful place.

Before the autumn sets in, and I put the focus machine in forward gear for the next few months, here are two more from Maine and the summer memory department. Julia June is my niece, my brother Doug's incredible 4-year old spitfire daughter.
Grayson is my awesome and inspiring 15-year old.

about me: My grandmother, Erma "Jonnie" Fisk
- 07/20/13 11:46 AM
My grandmother, Erma "Jonnie" Fisk The Bird Lady This picture hangs in the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences in Plymouth, Massachusetts, an institution for which my grandmother was a founding board member. "Amah" to us, and "Jonnie" to her many friends around the world, was an ornithologist. When she told children what her work was called, and they would invariably respond, with a quizzical look, "An ornith . . . huh?", she would lean down and say, "A bird lady, honey, a bird lady." Her work with the Audobon Society included travels around the world. While working for the Nature Conservancy, she (6 comments)
