information: Open doors without a key - 06/14/13 07:47 AM
House keys and punch pads may become things of the past as technology lets us open doors without a key or a password.

Keyless entry with a sensor or mobile phone app. These devices aren't on the market yet, and I suspect there will be more options available soon.
Would you use one of these?
Goji is my favorite. It takes a picture of the people at the door and sends it to your phone. Goji works with your smartphone, two programmable key fobs or mechanical keys. Indigogo is selling it now for $278 with 24/7 customer service, but it won't … (7 comments)

Endangered Piping Plovers nest on Duxbury Beach - Beach closed to cars indefinitely

18 pairs of Piping Plovers have decided to make Duxbury Beach their home for the summer. Town government being what it is, the announcement that the birds' presence triggered state and Federal protection laws that are intended to limit human interaction with and damage to the Plovers and their habitat was handled in an inelegant, insensitive and blunderingly blunt fashion. Predictably, closing the beach for an indefinite time has created a human backlash of thunderstorm proportions.
As the grandson of the woman who invented the Cape Cod … (3 comments)

information: Should I rent or buy a home in Plymouth? - 05/27/13 05:16 AM
"Should I rent or buy a home in Plymouth?" is a more specific question than the questions I've discussed in Should I Rent or Buy a Home?, Should I Rent or Buy Calculator: A Free, Comprehensive Tool, and Using the Should I Rent or Buy Calculator.

The bottom line is that -- right now -- it is hard to find a good home to rent in Plymouth that wouldn't be less expensive to buy. There also aren't very many rental homes available.
Plymouth has a very small rental pool for single-family homes. There are condos and apartments, but few homes. … (3 comments)

Summer in Hingham, Massachusetts

Hingham is primarily a residential town, but it offers some great summer activities. Some of them are year-round, too.
The Weir River Farm is a 75-acre working, family-friendly farm, one of the last farms in Hingham, with its own family of horses, pigs, cows, chickens and sheep. You can follow one path to the barnyard and visit with the horses, pigs, and chickens. Another path takes you across a grassy avenue before entering The Grove, woods with an open understory reminiscent of a British woodland. A Garden Path, bordered by flowering shrubs and flowers, within the Grove, creates … (5 comments)

information: Housing report you need to see - 05/24/13 06:59 AM
Just the facts. When I re-blog other peoples' content, it is because the information is very helpful.
While we are certainly seeing an active market, with properly priced homes selling in a very short period of time, the short-term positives are tempered, in my mind, with some very significant longer-term issues.
The "recovery" is biggest, in percentage terms, in certain markets that were very hard-hit. The recovery is from very low levels. If interest rates rise, buyers' purchasing power will dry up. If sellers start putting more homes on the market, that could slow or stop advancing price levels in … (3 comments)

Summer in Cohasset, Massachusetts

Cohasset is a residential town, with some great things to do. Cohasset has a walkable downtown, with shops and restaurants in the Village. Main Street and Elm Street are lined with historic homes. At the east end lies the beautiful protected harbor with its lobster boats and historic Minot's Lighthouse. Along the coast, magnificent homes and ocean vistas from Atlantic Avenue and Jerusalem Road comprise the “Gold Coast”, one of the loveliest waterfront home areas in the country.
Like much of the east coast of Massachusetts, the area is packed with early American history, and Cohasset has … (4 comments)

Summer in Duxbury, Massachusetts
The biggest summer draw in Duxbury is the Duxbury Beach. Over six miles of barrier strand beach is accessible by the Gurnet Bridge from Duxbury, and from the north, arriving through Marshfield. Daily parking fee is $15, and parking stickers are available from the town for both residents and non-residents.
Directions to Duxbury Beach:  Take Route 3 to exit 11, Duxbury. Take a right off the ramp and go straight onto Rt 139 past the Duxbury police station. At the fork in the road bear left and continue 2 miles. At the intersection, go straight and continue another … (5 comments)

information: Neil Diamond shows up to Sing "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway! - 04/20/13 11:18 PM

This was really, really cool.
Neil Diamond "just showed up", as the sportscasters said, at Boston's Fenway Park on Saturday to lead the crowd in a sing-along of his classic hit, "Sweet Caroline."
We sing the song during the eighth-inning of every Fenway game, and we've been doing it since 2002.
On Tuesday night, every Major League Baseball park in the country played the song in tribute to Boston. When the Yankees played it, that really warmed the hearts of Red Sox fans.
This was the first game at Fenway Park since the bombings, a day after the city had been locked … (11 comments)

information: Return on your investment in home improvements - 04/15/13 04:32 AM
What's the return on your investment in home improvements?
When you're selling your home, you obviously want it to look as good as possible for potential buyers. When you are evaluating whether to make an improvement or not, the most important question you will be asking is whether the cost is going to pay off in a higher price for your home.
I'm going to give you the short answer today, and we can talk more about the specific options that will give you the best ROI in your home.
In many situations, there are really two sides to this coin. … (9 comments)

Did you know you can download and print the Red Sox 2013 schedule?
It's here: Red Sox 2013 Schedule.
It's going to be a great year.
It's nice to be tied for first place!  I'll take it while we can get it.  Then again, perhaps this is our year.
I know some people who read my blog are Yankees fans. That's okay with me. I mean, after Fenway, Yankee Stadium is the best place to see the Red Sox win!  Heck, after Fenway and Wrigley, Yankee Stadium is the best place to see baseball.
Here's to a great summer, and to … (5 comments)

information: Coldwell Banker Previews International Luxury Market Report - 04/05/13 11:17 AM

I'm a big fan of our Coldwell Banker Previews International Luxury Market Report. It's gorgeous. It's informative. It's fun.
Before I moved back to the South Shore, I lived for most of a decade in Telluride, Colorado. Telluride features the best ski mountain in the United States, and is tucked away in the southwest corner of Colorado, making it delightfully difficult to get to, and sometimes, in a good snow storm, delightfully impossible to leave. It's better than Aspen, but Aspen has higher-priced real estate.
The Coldwell Banker Previews International Luxury Market Report spends a bit of ink on Aspen this time … (3 comments)

information: The Most Expensive Billionaire Homes in the World - 03/30/13 02:57 AM
Morgan Brennan writes a column and blog for Forbes.com. Her most recent article, The Most Expensive Billionaire Homes in the World, provides an outside glimpse on the locations and values of the most expensive homes ever sold, or for sale, in the world.
My sense is that the list covers properties for which there is a public market value, and whose buyer is included in Forbes list of billionaires. Except for the most expensive of them all, the rest of the list is heavily concentrated in U.S. and U.K. properties.
Ms. Brennan hints at this, although that is not her point, … (3 comments)

information: Four factors that you can control as the seller - 03/24/13 03:26 AM
Within the myriad of factors that play into the value of your home, there are four factors that you can control as the seller of your home: condition, access, marketing and price. Everything else is either an external, "environmental" factor or within the control of buyers.
For example, you cannot control the location or floor plan of your home, the style or historic value of your home, the schools in the area, tax rates, interest rates, job growth, similar homes that compete with yours, or other market activity.
In addition, you can't control your assessed value, the price you … (19 comments)
