stories: Cayamo - The Music Cruise - 01/30/14 08:15 AM
For the second week of February, I'll be on a cruise from Miami to Tortola and around the Caribbean. Now, I wouldn't go on an ordinary cruise. This is no ordinary cruise.
Cayamo is music 24/7. The musicians this year include Lyle Lovett, Brandi Carlile, Kris Kristofferson, Ricky Skaggs, Buddy Miller, Todd Snider, Jim Lauderdale, David Bromberg, Chuck Cannon, Kat Edmonson, Elephant Revival and about twenty other acts.
Past years when I've been on the cruise have included Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Patty Griffin, Nancy Griffith, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Shawn Colvin and a lot more.
The main acts perform concerts at … (3 comments)

stories: Super Bowl Telluride: Planting the flag atop the mountains I love - 01/27/14 03:48 AM
These places and these faces are near and dear to my heart. The painter in the street, the horse rider and several others are the Telluride people. I'm no Broncos fan, but I love the spirit and imagination and talent the people of this wonderful, mystical, magical town in southwest Colorado have put to work in this piece of art. Summit!

stories: Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish - 01/19/14 12:16 AM
Dateline: Saturday night, Plymouth MA
Subject: Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish
These guys have been rocking the South Shore and the Cape and Islands for years!  I had no idea they were playing nearby last night until I walked past a sandwich board on the street in Plymouth announcing that they were playing in the back right then.
I had to go in.  Had to.  So many good summer memories from those wistful days of youth. Brought it all back.  And it still feels good!
The dancing crowd was filled with kids from 20 to 70.
He's such a great … (8 comments)

stories: Pretty cool Emerson chalkboard - 01/18/14 02:17 AM
I just showed a house that is being well-lived in. That is, there is stuff everywhere because the occupants are enjoying life. We looked past it, knowing why, and loving it. There's always something that grabs me in each place I go. This permanent piece of artwork was hung on the chimney. Such good words to hold.

stories: Miramar sledding hill, Duxbury Massachusetts - 01/03/14 04:00 AM
We've had a bit of a snowstorm here, in case you haven't heard. Some people are saying that, as a storm, it's a bit disappointing even: not really a snow "event"!  The sun has poked through here. taking the edge off of the cold. Driveways are getting plowed out, and the snow has stopped.
So the kids need to get out of the house! It's a school snow day. Mid-year exam schedules will be scrapped, but that's a worry for tomorrow. Today, it's time to go sledding!
Miramar is a religious retreat at the foot of Bay Road. The hill is … (13 comments)

stories: Where were you? - 11/22/13 05:12 AM
The two big "where were you? questions are JFK's assassination and 9/11. The moon landing was another, but it was different: it was the first national television-event shared experience where we all tuned in to watch a planned event. Until JFK, no one had asked that question before and been able to get an answer from everyone in the United States and in many other countries as well.
Where were you? I was two. I grew up in Washington, D.C. I don't remember the assassination, but perhaps my earliest memory was the backwards boots on the horse at the funeral. That … (5 comments)

stories: Eilean Donan Castle, ancestral home of the MacKenzie clan, Scotland - 11/19/13 03:20 AM
Eilean Donan Castle
Ancestral home of the MacKenzie clan
Scotland

Eilean Donan, the clan castle of the MacKenzies, sits at the meeting point of Loch Long, Loch Duich and Loch Alsh. It's origin is shrouded in the mists of time (okay, about 600 C.E.).
The first fortified stronghold was established in the reign of Alexander II (1214-1250). In 1263 Alexander III gave the castle to Colin Fitzgerald, son of the Earl of Desmond and Kildare (later to become MacKenzies) as a reward for services in the Battle of Largs. The famous battle culminated in the defeat of the Norwegian King, Haco. Following … (4 comments)

The Cardinals plane is scheduled for an on-time departure tomorrow

Middlebrooks won't be obstructing the Cardinals' return flight to St. Louis tomorrow morning!
This photo is on the internet because a sportscaster was asked if Middlebrooks was also responsible for the 7-hour runway delay of the Cardinals plane last night. It's said the Cardinals are in good spirits today. That attitude will be somewhat different by about 9 p.m tonight, I reckon!

stories: When things are good, things are really good - 10/24/13 07:47 AM
When things are good, things are really good
I sing-song that title as if it were a Dr. Seuss rhyme!
I can't point to just one thing. The last couple of weeks have been "better and better". Great clients, great opportunities, great friends, and great developments all around.
It's about time. I've been up, I've been down. Up is better!
Would you let me know if things are really good for you?

stories: My flight in the cockpit of a commercial airline! - 10/21/13 01:24 PM
Well I just had a fabulous evening! My most excellent client, Todd, a JetBlue captain, told me he had to make a maintenance check-out flight on an Airbus A320, a commercial aircraft that's about the equivalent of a Boeing 737 with a bigger cockpit, in a few hours, and asked if I had time to join him! You bet I did!
I learned to fly about six years ago, but I never flew anything except a single-engine Cessna. My client is former Navy pilot who is now a captain for JetBlue. I had the enormous pleasure of learning much more about … (21 comments)

Red Sox win on SECOND  grand slam - But WHY? Manager Do-Something-Itis
By now you know that the Boston Red Sox won the sixth game of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers and are going to the World Series.
They won with a second astonishing and absolutely exhilarating grand slam, this time by Shane Victorino. I love it. You know that.
But here's my question. WHY? What exactly do managers do, and why do they do it? Why, that is, do they sabotage their teams at crucial moments by sending in relievers when the starter is doing just … (8 comments)

The best baseball game ever - Red Sox v. Tigers, ACLS Game 2, 2013
The single most exhilarating event I've ever witnessed in baseball was last night's grand slam home run in the 8th inning by Big Papi, David Ortiz, designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox. I haven't come down yet.

On the first pitch, with bases loaded, Papi unleashes. Fenway Park went absolutely berzerk.
The whole inning just kept setting up for this incredible moment. . . .
Here's six seconds of me and Grayson just before the game!
The first seven innings were just depressing. After losing … (5 comments)

stories: Keep the beard? - 10/09/13 06:01 AM
The biggest post-World Series decision the world must make is:
Should I keep the beard I grew in support of the Red Sox as they pursued their quest for, and inevitable acquisition of, the title of 2013 World Series Champions?
The votes are coming in. I'm surprised there isn't a clear answer! Help me. Help the world. Vote thumbs up or down on my YouTube video page!
And thank you for doing your part to make the world a more beautiful place.

stories: Alan Lomax's Archive goes online - 08/25/13 11:18 AM
For music lovers everywhere . . .
Alan Lomax's massive music archive goes online From NPR.org
Folklorist Alan Lomax spent his career documenting folk music traditions from around the world. Now thousands of the songs and interviews he recorded are available for free online, many for the first time. It's part of what Lomax envisioned for the collection — long before the age of the Internet.
Lomax recorded a staggering amount of folk music. He worked from the 1930s to the '90s, and traveled from the Deep South to the mountains of West Virginia, all the way to Europe, the Caribbean and … (3 comments)
