stories: Bruins amazing come-from-behind OT win! - 05/14/13 03:38 AM
The Boston Bruins scored two goals in the last two minutes of regular play to tie the seventh game of the playoff with the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-4. Then they scored to win in overtime.
I gotta tell you, I had written them off and wasn't watching the TV anymore, though it was still on in the background . . . until the goal that made it 4-3.
NY Rangers?  Bring it.

stories: May's Cloudburst of You - 05/12/13 01:24 PM
I just completed and submitted the form for the contest "May's Cloudburst of You".
My blogging is focused on market reports and hyperlocal posts, in addition to luxury homes, company listings, and local information about people, places, events and fun. You can find the categories that I blog about in the list of links on the right side of this page.
I also hope to be useful and to give back to the communities in my service area and to the Active Rain blogging community.
I am grateful for your help, friendship, support and feedback.

I offer you Thomas Dowd's photograph for Wordless Wednesday. If you missed my post about his work, please take a look here.

stories: Thomas Dowd, Photographer - 05/07/13 05:41 AM
Thomas Dowd, Photographer
A lifelong resident of the South Shore, Thomas Dowd is a photographer who revels in the beauty of our smal corner of the planet. It shows in his vibrant, breathing portrayals of the landscape, whether his feet are on the ground or a thousand feet in the air.
Remember dark rooms? Tom is glad that the days of developing his pictures in the darkness of a room filled with trays of chemicals is over. Now, like nearly every photographer, his vision, once it is captured on a digital canvas, takes shape in a photo editor. The results are … (9 comments)

stories: Chiltonville morning, Plymouth - 04/27/13 10:27 PM
This is a photographer friend's photos of a foggy morning a few days ago in Chiltonville, a neighborhood in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Chiltonville is a quiet, secluded area famous for its horse farms and homes dating back to the time of the Pilgrims.

stories: Duxbury Beach - 04/26/13 08:27 AM
Duxbury Beach, on an April afternoon.
The Gurnet Bridge is still under re-construction, so the only approach is from the Marshfield side, on Route 139.
Well, unless you want to risk incurring the (friendly) wrath of the Harbormaster if he catches you crossing the construction zone.
I took a few minutes, after viewing a lovely beach home on the Gurnet this afternoon, to walk in the sunshine.

April has been cold and gray here, and the warmth of the sunshine took the edge off the chill that lingered in the steady onshore breeze.
In town, the smell was … (11 comments)

If you didn't already know, Matt Damon's Miami Beach home on Biscayne Bay is for sale for $20 million. The star of Good Will Hunting, the 1997 film set in South Boston, is selling.
(Please don't ask me if he is "looking" for another home. You know; it's too easy.)
There are several ways to see pictures and learn more about this interesting and exceptional home at 6020 N. Bay Road, Miami Beach.
See the listing on The Jills' Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate site.

stories: Neil Diamond shows up to Sing "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway! - 04/20/13 11:18 PM

This was really, really cool.
Neil Diamond "just showed up", as the sportscasters said, at Boston's Fenway Park on Saturday to lead the crowd in a sing-along of his classic hit, "Sweet Caroline."
We sing the song during the eighth-inning of every Fenway game, and we've been doing it since 2002.
On Tuesday night, every Major League Baseball park in the country played the song in tribute to Boston. When the Yankees played it, that really warmed the hearts of Red Sox fans.
This was the first game at Fenway Park since the bombings, a day after the city had been locked … (11 comments)

stories: One thing . . . at a time - 04/17/13 04:42 AM
The Active Rain challenge on the book, The One Thing, asked me to read a chapter and write a report about what I was thinking as I read it.  Here's the link back to the original post so you can enter the challenge if you'd like.
I read all three chapters presented and am writing about the multi-tasking chapter. Essentially, it says multi-tasking isn't helpful or productive, and that the term is commonly misunderstood.
Multi-tasking isn't really doing two things at once. It's about allocating computer resources to the most important task, and using those resources on other tasks that are … (7 comments)

stories: My son and ex-wife were directly UNDER the explosions, on the subway - 04/15/13 10:18 PM
One of the fun parts of Patriots Day in Boston is the early Red Sox game. The whole point of an 11:00 a.m. start is that the Red Sox win early and the fans can stream out into Boston and take in the Marathon.  It's hectic because it's a whole crowd of happy people.
My son and my ex-wife are safe and okay.  But they had a harrowing day.
Also, an agent from our office was running in the Marathon and she was on the last mile or so at 2:50. She was stopped and was not able to finish. I'll … (5 comments)

stories: Castle Island, Roscommon, Ireland - 04/13/13 10:44 PM

Castle Island, Roscommon, Ireland
Lough Key is in the northeast of Connacht, near Boyle. The lough is named after Ce', a druid who drowned when the lake was created, according to legend. The castle is known as MacDermott's, or McGreevys, Castle. The Annals of Loch Cé report that the castle was burned down in 1187 by lightning.
During the conquest of Connacht in 1235, the castle came under siege by 500 knights, a raft-mounted catapult and fire ships.
A poem to the MacDermot King of Moylurg (1421-1458) tells the story of the Hag of Loch Ce who lived on the … (12 comments)

stories: Congratulations To Me Contest Entry - 04/07/13 11:43 PM
Congratulations To Me Contest Entry What?!? Congratulations to me?
You bet.
The challenges I set for this contest are twofold.  The dietary goal is to maintain the juicing diet I describe in the video, and the physical goal is to run stairs, run distance or lift weights every day through the end of April.
This is obviously the blog post outlining my goals and including the congratulatory video.
The video appears below.
To complete the contest requirements, I'll comment now at contest central with a link to this post.

I love this stuff.  What a great community we have here! Thanks.

stories: The King of Diamonds, Harry Winston - 04/05/13 04:55 AM
Alyson Pitarre, writing for Coldwell Banker Previews, has a nice piece about The King of Diamonds, Harry Winston, in the current issue of Homes and Estates magazine.
She gives us an overview of the story of the 601-carat diamond, Lesotho, part of which became Jacqueline Kennedy's engagement ring.
Then there's the 128.25-carat "Ice Queen" that was so blindingly bright that when Eugenie Niarchos wore it out, "the city lights went dim by comparison".
There's a new book about Harry Winston called Harry Winston. It sounds like an interesting story about a passionate man. I am going to read it; let me … (3 comments)

stories: I wish I knew - 04/02/13 07:45 AM

I wish I knew that I was coming back to real estate after 10 years doing other things.
I'm writing this post for the April Active Rain Challenge called "What do you wish you knew . . . "

My path through life has been multiple, varied and colorful. I've done a lot of things, been a lot of places and met a lot of people. I suppose I've slowed down the rate of change in the past decade, but when I was in my 30's, people would often say, "Wow, you've done a lot for your age!"
I've … (38 comments)

stories: Body dryer for your shower - 03/24/13 04:17 AM
This gizmo, a body dryer for your shower, made me smile, and tingle all over.  Okay, maybe not tingle, but warmer just from the memories of stepping out of a hot shower into a cold bathroom. I read about it in this Coldwell Banker blog, and reproduce the feed I received here.
Lindsey Listanski writes:
What if I told you there was product that would prevent you from that awful moment you encounter every time you step out of the shower into the cold air. Would you be interested? What if I told you this product would save you from … (1 comments)

stories: The 30-Year History of 30-Year Fixed-Rate Mortgages - 03/18/13 10:30 PM
The 30-Year history of 30-Year Fixed-Rate Mortgages The 30-year history of 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates is that those rates have been in a slow, fairly steady, continuing decline. Did you know that? Do you remember the gas crisis of the '70s? How about the inflation? I do.
Look at the chart below. It shows the very long-lasting trend of falling long-term rates.
Right now, "everyone" is saying that rates can't stay this low: everyone with a vested interest in getting people to borrow money right now, that is.
I'm asking, why can't they go lower? Why are interest rates sure to go … (7 comments)

stories: Happy St. Patrick's Day! - 03/16/13 11:51 PM
Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Have you met my friend, Pat O'Butter?
He's a fine fella. Found in all the best pubs and rolls. A slice o' Pat'll give ya a taste of the good times.
Now go out there and find an Irish joint and stand in line to get a pint!

stories: Seller's market strategy? Sure . . . if and when - 03/16/13 12:50 AM
Active Rain, my blogging platform, is running a contest based on the idea that market conditions are shifting toward a "hot" seller's market, and AR is asking what changes I will make in the way I do business to address this shift. This AR contest has a very interesting premise that we are hearing about in the news and from certain areas of the country. I keep seeing the news in the media, and reading blogs written by my peers and colleagues all over this fine country, and wondering, "When are we going to get some of that action?"
Market conditions … (3 comments)
