kids: Click to help Fowler Memorial Free Dental Clinic - 04/02/10 06:59 AM
Last year, the Fowler Memorial Free Dental Clinic opened in the Human Services building of the Pleasant View Complex here in Monroe.  This clinic provides free dental care to lower income children:  xrays, cleanings, fillings, flouride treatment, and sealants.  This clinic serves a strong need in the area.  While finding a doctor who accepts patients on medicaid or Badgercare is realatively easy, finding a dentist who will accept new patients with this insurance is much more difficult.  Fowler Memorial serves a population that is otherwise underserved.
Fowler Memorial Free Dental Clinic is currently trying to win a grant through Pepsi's Refresh … (0 comments)

kids: Speechless Sunday: Summertime... - 05/31/09 02:41 PM

All rights reserved. Photographed in rural Green County, WI, on an early summer day in May, 2009.  This tiny little pond is located on private property or I would tell you where you can go to stick your toes in the water and watch the butterflies flitter on a warm day.

kids: Shopping for kids in the Monroe area? - 03/14/09 09:17 AM
There is a window on the south side of Monroe's Downtown Square that often shows little hand prints and nose marks. The kids cannot help themselves; the toys and clothes in the window display at Kidz Kloset are so colorful and fun that getting closer is the natural thing to do. Kidz Kloset has a great selection of clothing and shoes for infants and toddlers, plus a selection of wonderful pieces for preschoolers and elementary age boys and girls. Once glance, one touch will let you know these are not big box store items. Finding durable children's clothing locally is a … (6 comments)

kids: Area Business Spotlight: Nicki's Diapers - 02/23/09 07:57 AM
There is a strong entreprenurial spirit here in the Green County area.  Many small businesses call this area home.  Some are well known outside of the area, but little known here. One of these businesses is Nicki's Diapers. Nicki's Diapers opened up a retail storefront in New Glarus last year under the name Planet Wise, but they have been operating online for considerably longer than that. Nicki's Diapers and Planet Wise show the half-hidden environmentalism that is surprisingly strong here in the Green County area.As a cloth diaper user myself, the opening on Planet Wise made it even easier to keep my … (1 comments)

kids: Roller skates anyone? - 02/03/09 06:55 AM
We all need to get out and exercise this time of year. With that in mind, our family spent the afternoon roller skating at The Den in Monroe for the first time in far too long. It was such a great place for the entire family.  Skating at The Den is much more fun than a treadmill, and the kids will love it too. The Den changed hands a while back, and the new owners are certainly doing a wonderful job making their establishment a place that is fun for kids of all ages as well as adults. They have a choice … (0 comments)

If you have not heard of the South Central Wisconsin Archers (SCWA) Youth League, you are not alone. They seem to be one of the better kept secrets in the Monroe Area. SCWA has a shooting range in the lower level of the commercial building across from Wisconsin Community Bank, underneath Tommy Thompson's Chiropractic office.  They run a number of tournaments each year, both indoor and outdoor, and all are open to the public.  The indoor archery range is open for public use during posted times, and members have the open of using it at any time.  Fees are minimal.

kids: Lending a Helping Hand - 11/17/08 01:48 PM
Like most rural communities, Monroe has a very strong community of people who are willing to lend a helping hand when needed.  There are many service groups in our area - Kiwanis, Jaycees, Knights of Columbus, Optimists.  You can find a listing of the many groups in our area via our website.  We have thrown our membership hat into the Optimists ring.  If you are not a member of the Optimists, consider attending their meeting this week.  The morning club meets from 6:30 to 7:30 am every Thursday morning at Swiss Alps.  Come for breakfast, listen to the weekly speaker, talk … (2 comments)

kids: Meet me at the YMCA - 11/06/08 07:01 AM
The remodelling at the Green County YMCA  has been going on since later summer.  It is now complete, and what a great job they did!  It is a much more intuitive space now and more user-friendly for those of us living and working in the Monroe area. All the great Y programs for children and adults are still in place, including partnerships with many of our local employers and health insurance companies.Members have often questioned why the main entrance was not the doors by the parking lot, and the YMCA has listened. With this renovation, the front and back spaces have … (4 comments)

Summer means spending time outdoors for many people, and community sporting events are often a popular place to be.
There is still time in Monroe to sign the children up for softball, baseball or tennis. The eight week long little girls softball or little league baseball season is only $16 for residents. Adult slowpitch league sign-up is over, but if you contact Park and Rec, perhaps they have a substitution list for you to sign up on. Call Carol at 329-4666.
