The cost is only $7.50, and I've been told that YPs can feel free to bring the family. monroe: Town or city? - 12/22/08 07:21 AM
What make a small town?
As with so many things, size is in the eye of the beholder.  I often refer to our community, Monroe, WI, as a city, but then a couple of days later, I will call it a town.  It really is both, depending on your point of view.
I grew up in the country, first on a dairy farm and then in a home that could not see a single neighbor.  The nearby towns that I call my hometowns are each home to about 2000 people.  Those to me are small towns.  The closest city was Madison, … (4 comments)

monroe: Ringing in 2009 in Green Country, Wisconsin - 12/20/08 03:41 AM
It feels like I am skipping head in the holiday scheme of things, but I just realized that it is already December 20.
If you have not made your plans yet for New Year's Eve, there are a few events going on in the area.
Tofflers New Year's Eve with Joel Pingitore and the Play Ground of Sound:  Toffler's in New Glarus often features live music, and New Year's Eve is no exception. monroe: Youth Archery League in Monroe, WI - 12/01/08 10:33 AM
If you have not heard of the South Central Wisconsin Archers (SCWA) Youth League, you are not alone. They seem to be one of the better kept secrets in the Monroe Area. SCWA has a shooting range in the lower level of the commercial building across from Wisconsin Community Bank, underneath Tommy Thompson's Chiropractic office.  They run a number of tournaments each year, both indoor and outdoor, and all are open to the public.  The indoor archery range is open for public use during posted times, and members have the open of using it at any time.  Fees are minimal.

monroe: Driving Down Your Driving Time - 10/24/08 09:02 AM
As we in the United States are waking up to the end of cheap oil, many are starting to reevaluate how we get around. Around Monroe, we saw many more bicycles out this summer, and we noticed that the Badger State Trail going through Monroe had a great deal of pedestrian and bicycle traffic this year.
As more people start using self-propelled transportation, home buyers are starting to pay attention to nearby amenities. What is nearby, what can they walk to? Monroe itself is a highly walkable community. I recently visited Walk Score to check how walkable some of our homes … (1 comments)

monroe: Singin' the Blues - 09/18/08 05:24 AM
As mentioned in my last post, Berghoff and Blues is happening this weekend in conjunction with Cheese Days.
The festival, now in its 11th year, features excellent blues performers and Berghoff Beer, brewed locally by our own Minhas Craft Brewery. Our brewery is the oldest continuously operating brewery in the Midwest, and it turns out wonderful products like Minhas brews, Huber beers including Berghoff and Blumers sodas.
The brewery is open for tours this weekend, as it is most weekends. Come, learn about the brewing process and then stay for some music and refreshments. Concessions stands will be operated … (1 comments)

monroe: Cheese Days in Monroe, WI - 09/15/08 04:13 AM
Every other year, Monroe is home to the oldest food festival in the Midwest. I don't call this blog "Cheese Country Realtor" for nothing. The area around Monroe is dotted with cheese factories, and this coming weekend, September 19-21, is their time to shine.
The Square will be filled with festival attractions. The popular Cheese Tasting Tent is always the big draw on the west side. The south side of the Square is home to the stage and the ever popular Optimist's Cheese Curds stand. Get in line early for your cheese curds tickets, and remember to bring your patio chair … (0 comments)

monroe: Concerts on the Square Part 2 - 08/07/08 03:04 PM
A recent question asked about the Monroe Main Street Concert on the Square series for this summer.
The concerts are on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month this summer. There are two concerts remaining, one on August 14 and one on August 28. The concerts start at 6:30 pm and generally last about 2 hours. I do not have the information on the specific bands right now, but the concert next week will be jazz and one at the end of the month will be bluegrass.
Boxed dinners are available at downtown restaurants prior to the concert, … (1 comments)

monroe: Deli-ghtful Dining - 06/02/08 04:26 AM
If you are looking for a place for a quick yet satisfying lunch, skip the fast food. Visit to Monroe's Downtown Square and the Garden Deli.
The Garden Deli is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite to eat. It takes no longer than the chain fast food joints, yet the food is a world apart. Sandwiches are made to order from fresh ingredients. I am big fan of the turkey with spinach and provolone on whole wheat. They also offer white buns, sourdough, french and croissants for bread choices. Get the sandwiches hot or cold, whatever trips your trigger. … (3 comments)

monroe: A Sure Sign of Summer - 05/19/08 06:13 AM
After the winter that we had here in Wisconsin, summer has seemed a long time in coming. It is nearly Memorial Day weekend, yet we do not dare to put away the long sleeved shirts and light coats just yet.

Summer is slowly coming, though, and one sure sign is the opening of the Monroe Farmer's Market. The market opens this Wednesday, May 21. As in other years, the market will run on Wednesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings.

Things are expanding at the market this year. Plans are to enlarge the market to three sides of the … (1 comments)

monroe: Play Ball! - 05/16/08 07:40 AM
Summer means spending time outdoors for many people, and community sporting events are often a popular place to be.
There is still time in Monroe to sign the children up for softball, baseball or tennis. The eight week long little girls softball or little league baseball season is only $16 for residents. Adult slowpitch league sign-up is over, but if you contact Park and Rec, perhaps they have a substitution list for you to sign up on. Call Carol at 329-4666.
Youth tennis lessons run only $20 for residents. They run in two week sessions either in the first half or … (0 comments)

monroe: Hidden Gems April 25, 2008 - 04/25/08 09:14 AM
Green County is home to many artisan businesses, and one of the tastiest is on the east side of Monroe's downtown Square. Chocolate Temptations is one of the Hidden Gems of Green County.

The exterior colors of cafe au lait and bittersweet chocolate hint at the delectable treats awaiting inside. Step through the doors, and the gentle aroma of chocolate and coffee envelope you.

The Buol family has been creating gourmet hand-dipped chocolates in Monroe since 1995. Their truffles are exceptional - a domed shell of chocolate encasing a rich, superb blend of cream and chocolate. They offer a … (1 comments)

monroe: Spring Fever - 04/19/08 09:06 AM
Spring has finally sprung here in Cheese Country. After the long, hard winter we have had here, people are peeking outside, eager to start the spring activities. Tops on the list of many people in our area is working in the garden.
The garden center choices in our area are numerous. Up in New Glarus, Brenda's Blumenladen is loaded with plants, trees, shrubs and garden ornaments. Near Brodhead on Greenbush Rd, Ahrens Acres is a full service greenhouse as well. Just west of Monticello on Hwy N, Garden Path Greenhouses is a popular spot. A few miles north of New … (2 comments)

monroe: Hidden Gems April 11, 2008 - 04/11/08 07:02 AM
If you have children and live in the Monroe area, sooner or later you are bound to meet the smiling face of Miss Kris.Miss Kris is the heart and soul of the children's room of the Monroe Public Library. She is there with a smile, greeting children by name and quick to remember their interests and personalities. Many young kids happily bounce up the stairs to the children's section to give her an update on their lives. She listens patiently, taking the time to pay attention, ask questions and genuinely care. Older kids play on the computer, read, do homework and … (2 comments)

Vote in one category or all twenty-seven, but go vote. Tell us all about your favorite hidden gems in the area.
