real estate: Leland NC Changes - 08/17/10 08:59 AM
Brunswick County commissioners Monday approved some rule changes designed to make it easier for small businesses to get started in the county.
Proposals included relaxing some of the stringent requirements governing landscaping, lighting and parking that caused headaches for business owners trying to comply with them.
One change approved at Monday's board workshop bumps the number of parking spaces a lot must have before it needs a landscape island up from 10 to 20. Another decreases the number of trees needed as a buffer between a business and the road.
They are all part of the county's unified development ordinance, which dictates land … (0 comments)

real estate: New Hanover Tax Hike - 05/07/10 05:25 AM
New Hanover County residents already approved a one-quarter cent sales tax increase. Now the county commissioners plan to raise property taxes too.

At the direction of the majority of commissioners, County Manager Bruce Shell will produce a recommended spending plan that uses the extra sales tax and a 1.3-cent property tax rate increase to balance the budget. That document will be presented to the commissioners on May 17.
The preliminary budget plan does not impose drastic cuts to "quality of life" programs such as libraries, parks and others. The commissioners had said that those programs … (0 comments)

real estate: Skyway Bridge - 04/30/10 04:17 AM
There are more than a few unanswered questions about funding, planning, routes associated with the Wilmington/Leland NC Skyway Bridge. This bridge was the brainchild of former Governor Easley. Taking into account that another key player in this saga (Lanny Wilson) has resigned his seats on the NCDOT as well as the NCTA, I find myself thinking that the original intent of this bridge was to put large sums of money into the hands of certain well-placed individuals.I also find it strange that funds mysteriously appeared to complete the southern leg of the I140 bypass (to connect US 17 with 74/76), while … (0 comments)

real estate: Sell your Home Faster ! - 04/24/10 04:27 AM
1. CLEANESS: Nothing turns off a buyer quicker than a dirty house.
A big mistake is not getting the home in the best possible condition.
Sellers should go the extra mile, from steam-cleaning tile and grout to replacing carpets.
If the carpets are old and smelly, you should put in new. If they're relatively new, you should at least have them shampooed.
The home should be neat and clean and free of all debris. If it smells like animals or the kitchen sinks and counters are filthy, buyers hesitate even to look around.
2. Odors
Buyers, it's said, buy with their noses. Make sure your home smells … (5 comments)

real estate: Tax Refund - 04/16/10 04:05 AM
Paying income taxes is never fun, but there's a silver lining when you get money back. The average tax refund fluctuates from year to year, but lately it's been in the neighborhood of $2,500. An extra $2,500 from the IRS can do a lot of good around the house, from insulating an attic to sprucing up a dated bathroom. It can also pay down high-interest debt, help you get ahead on mortgage payments, or improve it to sell.Tips for investing a tax refund in your home depends on your life stage and financial circumstances, sometimes it makes sense to invest the money … (0 comments)

real estate: Tips for Avoiding Foreclosure - 02/20/10 05:58 AM
Do your homework. Housing advocates say the reason many homeowners end up in unaffordable loans is that they either did not understand the terms of their loans.
Call your lender while your head is still above water. If your credit has already tanked, you will lose negotiating power.
Open all mail from the bank. Some subprime lenders, like Washington Mutual, are calling or writing ARM customers six or more months before a reset to offer assistance.
Locate a free or low-cost housing counselor. Go to the U.S. Department of U.S. Department for Housing and Urban Development website to find HUD-certified counselors .

real estate: Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity - 02/06/10 07:59 AM
This is the first home Jenkins owns, and it comes from Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, the New Hanover County affiliate of the Christian housing ministry. The international nonprofit provides volunteers, building materials and affordable mortgages for those making 30 to 60 percent of the area's median income.
Jenkins likes to help build her own house - a requirement of homeowners in the program - and learn to fix things herself. She said she's glad she's getting this before the New Hanover affiliate has to leave Navassa, where it has built houses and relationships for the past four years.
She said she … (1 comments)

real estate: tax credit information - 01/24/10 01:57 PM
Some questions and answers about the homebuyers tax credit:
Q. What's the purpose of the credit?
A. Congress passed the tax credits in an effort to boost the struggling housing industry and fight recession. Indications are that it's had an impact. The National Association of Realtors reported that November sales of existing homes were up 44 percent from a year earlier. Although new home sales dropped in November, figures from the Commerce Department show that they're up 8 percent from the low in January 2009.
Q. How many people are claiming the credit?
A. "In all, 4.4 million households are … (0 comments)

real estate: New Leland NC Skyway - 10/23/09 08:36 AM
The Brunswick County Commissioners are poised to put their support behind the Cape Fear Skyway, including protecting a corridor from development as planning for the road continues.
State law allows municipalities to file "transportation official corridor maps," preventing building on a road's planned path for three years. We're in agreement with the idea and concept, but only if they use the northern route.
It would pass primarily through undeveloped parts of Brunswick County, largely avoiding major developments and missing the existing neighborhoods of Snee Farm and Stoney Creek altogether.Brunswick County's support would appear to be a boon … (0 comments)
