charlotte: Creative loafing is charlotte's free paper - 03/14/09 04:55 PM
Charlotte NC has a ton of different things to do and different people with different interests.
Creative Loafing is the free paper that serves the community. The idea is to create a publication that serves readers who don't necessarily care about the stuff that goes on at the city council meetings.
The paper is aimed at younger people who go out to bars and art shows. The paper doesn't mind being edgy and doesn't censor much. They print curse words and go after subjects that would never make it in the Charlotte Observer, the daily paper.
I'm not endorsing it. But … (6 comments)

charlotte: Charlotte and Mecklenburg work together - 03/14/09 04:50 PM
Since Charlotte NC has experience such amazing growth in the past 20 years, the city has expanded to the size of the county almost. There are several towns outside of Charlotte, but inside of Mecklenburg county. Many departments of city and county government have merged to provide better services to these communities and the county as a whole.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department is one of the department. I really don't know all the ins and outs of the policing in Charlotte. But there are Mecklenburg county Sheriffs. I have no idea what they do though. If the city and county … (0 comments)

charlotte: Fit city Challenge in Charlotte NC - 03/14/09 04:46 PM
Charlotte and Mecklenburg county have come together to issue the Fit City Challenge in Charlotte NC.
Its basic mission is to try to make people walk 5 miles a week and eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day. The idea is to get as many people moving and eating healthy so that the city's medical bills start going down instead of up.
I don't think that there are very many ways that you can slice it that this is a bad thing. Encouraging people to be fit is a great way to build community and to help people become healthy. The more … (3 comments)

charlotte: Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte - 03/14/09 04:41 PM
The Mecklenburg Aquatic Center is the downtown pool for the county. There are some high schools with olympic sized swimming pools already in them in Charlotte, but this serves the high schools with no pool as well as holds tournaments for big events.
It is a great pool, cool enough that the men's olympic decided to do their training there as they ran up to the Beijing Olympics. The word on the street is that Michael Phelps and the rest of the relay team trained at this complex in uptown Charlotte.
The pool is massive and is home to many of … (0 comments)

charlotte: ImaginOn a center for Children in Charlotte - 03/14/09 04:37 PM
ImaginOn is a building in uptown Charlotte on 7th street that hosts shared events for young people. There were two competing service groups who came together to share this facility to teach children.
The public library and the childrens theater of Charlotte joined together to make this happen.
I've already posted about an event going on at the venue, but I wanted to write about what the space is all about.
It is named after Joe and Joan Martin, two people who gave to their community. Joe was an author who published two books.
The building was finally completed in 2005 … (0 comments)

charlotte: Robin Williams wowed the crowd in Charlotte - 02/28/09 03:52 PM
Robin Williams gave a performance in Charlotte NC on his stand up comedy tour. The performance featured jokes that were unexpectedly local. The Charlotte Observer said that he included a lot of material about Charlotte and it's NASCAR museum and a lot of other local current events. Huh. Robin isn't the type of comedian everyone likes when he does stand up. There are a lot of people who wouldn't take them home to meet their mother. But, that's okay. I thought that it was interesting that he used so much local material because as I understood it, stand up comics usually … (4 comments)

charlotte: Jonas Brothers Come to Charlotte NC movie theater - 02/28/09 02:48 PM
I read in the Charlotte Observer today that the Jonas Brothers, the ubiquitous musical group that is taking America by storm, visited a bunch of movie theaters to promote their new movie this weekend. They stopped by Regal Cinemas in Stonecrest, near Pineville and Ballantyne.
Nick, Joe and Kevin are surprising all kinds of people this weekend on their tour, which will take them all over the place on a private jet. They are met by screaming teenagers wherever they go.
They only jumped out of their car for a second before jumping back in and heading off to Atlanta. They … (0 comments)

charlotte: Where to buy a TV for the Superbowl in Charlotte Nc - 01/24/09 01:27 PM
The big game is coming up next week and if you have still got a 13 channel cathode ray tube tv that you got at goodwill, maybe its time for an upgrade.
There are a bunch of places in Charlotte that you can find yourself in TV land. Circut city is closing its doors after getting beat at its own game by best buy and the market downturn. If you hurry you might be able to score a good deal there. There is one on South Boulevard in the Starmount neighborhood. It is south of South End I haven't been by … (0 comments)

charlotte: Bank of America in Charlotte NC - 12/13/08 08:31 AM
Bank of America makes its headquarters in Charlotte. It is the largest bank by assets and the second largest bank in America if you count the deposts. It is only one of the several banks with a major presence in Charlotte NC's uptown.  There are a few headquarters and a few large subheadquarters here. What is amazing is the story of how Bank of America wound up on the East Coast.
The story of any bank is the story of almost endless mergers and name changes over the years.  Bank of America, was BankAmerica and headquartered in San Francisco.  The company … (0 comments)

charlotte: Panthers undefeated at home - 12/13/08 08:12 AM
The Carolina Panthers, with their win over Tampa Bay recently, have made themselves undefeated at home.  That is quite a distinction when you look at the competition.  In the NFL, everyone is good. But the Panther's division is really good. It is likely that one of the wild card teams in the playoffs will come from the Panther's division.  Thankfully, the Panthers wont be in the wildcard race.  It seems more likely that they will win their division and get into the playoffs normally this year.  Especially since they beat Tampa Bay.
The panthers are an important part of Charlotte and … (0 comments)

charlotte: Carolina Panthers featured on Monday Night Football in Charlotte NC - 12/06/08 01:54 PM
This is a really big game folks.  The Panthers have been on a roll lately, but it could all come crashing down with this game on Monday, played in front of a national audience.  The Panthers play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday in Charlotte, next to some wonderful uptown Charlotte Real Estate.
Currently the Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied in their division, a sad thing, because this division is so competitive this year.  Compared with the NFC West this year, where the Cardinals have the best record at  7 and 5, and two teams in that division … (1 comments)

charlotte: Expo in Concord, NC - 11/21/08 02:56 PM
This weekend marks the beginning of the Carolina Green Living Expo.  This is the first annual event of it's type in Concord, NC.   It aims to provide people with information about how they can live healthier lives with less impact on the envirnment.  The event held on this date was formerly called the Mid Atlantic Farm Show.  It goes to show how much the region around Charlotte NC real estate has changed in the past few years.
Charlotte was once an cotton town.  However, large banks and other industries arrived that turned Charlotte into a major metropolis.  That change has … (1 comments)

charlotte: Carolina Panthers Win in Charlotte NC on Sunday - 11/18/08 02:39 PM
In a not-so-surprising game on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers beat the Detroit Lions in Charlotte NC. The Panthers are 8-2 while the Lions are stuck at 0-10.
However, the game wasn't as clear cut as it seems.  Detroit came out swinging and scored two touchdowns early.  I was actually scared for a few mintues.  I also forgot that Daunte Culpepper, the Lion's quarterback is a huge guy, that isn't easily tackled.  The program said he weighs 260, but he could weigh more.
Despite the cold weather, the stadium was far from empty.  It's even more surprising that the stadium … (0 comments)

charlotte: A great time to move family closer in Charlotte NC - 11/06/08 03:09 PM
I spent some time with my grandmother the other day, who relocated to Charlotte NC to be near me and my family.  That got me thinking that it's a great time to reunite the family.  With real estate prices the way they are, this is the perfect time for retired relatives to move to be closer to their loved ones.  Charlotte NC is a great place to relocate because its less expensive real estate lets folks who are relocating from most anywhere buy more house for their dollar.  In this market in particular, the time to buy is now and these … (5 comments)

charlotte: Hit the slopes in NC, a short drive from Charlotte NC - 11/06/08 02:29 PM
Charlotte, North Carolina is uniquely positioned in the foothills of North Carolina.  It is easy as pie to get away to the east, and hit the sand dunes on the Outer Banks, and even easier to ride up into the Blue Ridge Mountains for a weekend getaway.
Charlotte, NC is a short drive from many mountain towns like Asheville, which offers a walkable downtown filled with shops and restaurants nestled right in the heart of the Carolina Mountains.  If you go further north to Boone, you get closer to some of North Carolina's ski slopes.  You heard right, North Carolina … (3 comments)

charlotte: Beach Trip from Charlotte NC - 11/06/08 02:13 PM
Just a few short hours from Charlotte, NC, the North and South Carolina Beaches wait for you.  In the summer, they are havens for tourists.  Hilton Head Island, Emerald Isle and Myrtle Beach are in South Carolina and accessible from Charlotte NC Real Estate.  Wilmington and its beaches like Wrightsville and Carolina Beach are also accessible as are the famous Outer Banks.  Although they are farther away from Charlotte, they are well worth the trip.  See the horses at Corolla, or the lighthouse at Hatteras.
Although summers are fun times to hit the beach and bask in the sun with … (0 comments)

charlotte: Nascar Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC - 10/24/08 06:05 AM
The NASCAR Hall of Fame is all set for construction. Plans are for the building to sit right downtown right across the street from the new convention center in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. It will be at the corner of Martin Luther King Street and Brevard. When it's completed in 2010, the hall will be a major tourist attraction for devotees of NASCAR, the fast-growing stock car racing organization. Located in the heart of uptown Charlotte, the hall will be easily accessable to residents of downtown neighborhoods like South End, NoDa, Myers Park and Eastover.
But, racing has its roots in North Charlotte, … (1 comments)

charlotte: The Blue Line connects Charlotte to suburban real estate - 10/24/08 03:48 AM
The Blue Line is the first installment of the light rail line in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Initally a success, the rail line, which travels from I-485 to uptown Charlotte, eased expenses for commuters from Charlotte Suburbs by offering parking decks for commuters who ride the rail lines in to work.
Commuters from Pineville, Matthews, Tega Cay, Weddington, Ballantyne, and Lake Wylie benefit the most from this first leg which runs down South Boulevard along one of Charlotte's most important Southwestern corridors.  Thousands of riders ride everyday into and out of town to commute to jobs in uptown Charlotte.
Thousands more Panthers … (0 comments)

charlotte: Bear Market Means Opportunity in Real Estate - 10/23/08 07:04 AM
In any downturn, including the Charlotte real estate market, it's important to consider your options carefully.  When gas prices spiked six months ago, many people reacted by selling their large cars for a loss to buy smaller cars.  However, they lost more money selling their car for a loss than they gained by buying a more efficient car.  If you have the itch to sell your house in the Charlotte area for a loss without reinvesting in the real estate market, read on, you might be surprised. Acting too hastily could result in a bigger loss than you anticipated if you … (0 comments)

charlotte: Uptown Charlotte entertainment gets a leg up - 10/23/08 06:29 AM
Uptown Charlotte just became a more interesting place to work and live. The EpiCenter, a new mixed use development, will spring up in place of the old Charlotte convention center.  The EpiCenter will feature new dining and nightlife venues when it's completed.  This new development will make Charlotte more liveable and more attractive to new homebuyers.  The EpiCenter is just steps from Uptown Charlotte and the Blue Line, the first piece of Charlotte's light rail project.
Light rail in Charlotte makes it easier than ever to enjoy the city's first-rate ammenities without living uptown.  Charlotte offers the small town feel of living in … (0 comments)
