pets: A Pet's Ten Commandments - 07/10/10 02:51 AM

I saw this and wanted to share it with everyone.  I think it is self-explanatory.

A Pet's Ten Commandments

1.  My life is likely to last 10-15 years.  (Horses 25-40.)  Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2.  Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3.  Place your trust in me.  It is crucial for my well-being.
4.  Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment.  You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5.  Talk to me. Even if … (4 comments)

pets: 7 Steps For Keeping People, Pets and Livestock Safe During Disasters - 03/22/10 08:58 AM

With all the rains and snows we have had recently, and being a volunteer with the Lehigh Valley Animal Response Team (LVCART), I thought I would post these 7 Tips for Keeping People, Pets and Livestock Safe During a Disaster.

1.  Planning.  Create a family and business emergency plan for people, livestock and pets.  Know the risks for your community.  Livestock operations must implement bio-security practices to protect their operation from accidental or intentional outbreaks of devastating animal diseases.

2.  Preparation.  Involve all family members or employees in practicing your plan.  Gather all necessary supplies you will need during … (4 comments)

pets: Pet Food Bank in the Lehigh Valley, PA Opens It's New Doors - 10/07/09 07:30 AM

The Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania now has an all volunteer organization that helps low-income pet owners.  And it all started out as a Girl Scout project.

Yesterday a ribbon cutting ceremony occurred iin Bethlehem at the Northampton Community College's Fowler Family Southside Center.  It was for the Animal Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley.

Four years ago, a 19 year old girl scout came up with the idea for a project of accepting donations of pet food for people who frequented the soup kitchen at Bethlehem church.  Originally it was to be a temporary project.  Instead it grew.

pets: Charity Formed by REALTOR to Save Abandoned Pets During Foreclosure - 07/16/08 07:52 AM

As more and more foreclosures escalate and home owners are forced out of their homes, pets end up abandoned in the homes with little food and water.  The former homeowners assume a real estate agent or bank official will be by the home to inspect it, but in most instances that is not the case.  Pets end up with no food or water in hot or freezing homes with utilities shut off.

Some owners make attempts to place their beloved pets in no kill shelters or pet rescues, but most end up turned away.  Most of these shelters … (9 comments)

pets: Retorts to a Non-Pet Owner - 03/31/08 06:47 AM

Ever have a non-animal owner give you these odd looks, while at your house, when a little hair shows up on their clothes, or when a nudge from your dog leaves a stain?

Well, here are some come backs to say to your non-pet owners who visit and complain about our pets:
"They live here.  You don't."
"If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture."
"That's why they call it "fur"niture."
"I like my pets better than I like most people."
"To you, they are an animal.  To me, they're adopted kids . … (19 comments)

pets: Lehigh Valley Animal Response Team - Ready To Go Into Action! - 02/19/08 06:13 AM
As some of you may know, I volunteer with the Lehigh Valley Animal Response Team (LVCART).  We have been in the organizational stage for about a year now and we are just about ready to go live.
When disaster strikes, there are many organizaations that come to aid humans.  But, there are people that will not evacuate because they do not wish to leave their beloved pets behind.  This is where the LVCART comes into play.  LVCART will respond to any emergency situation affecting animals.
Awareness of animal response teams was raised back in 1998 when Hurricane Floyd hit.  The need was there … (4 comments)
