health: On the hot weather...stay hydrated. - 07/10/14 02:20 PM
I was surprised when a Doctor talked about marathons and how many people get To much water.
Drinking to much water can make us literally drown in ourselves.
He, don't get him wrong, but to much water isn't a good thing.
He would prefer to see people drink something more like Powerade or Gatorade.
When we sweat a lot we lose vital minerals.
I personally know that if I get dehydrated, water just not cut it.  But, Powerade will get me back on track in a very short time.
Energy drinks and pop do just the opposite and rob you of … (5 comments)

health: I am taking control of my health... - 03/25/14 02:12 AM
My Doctor asked me if I was going to go Bass fishing this year.
"Of course"  I responded.
Well, you better change your ways or you may not live that long.
So, I am taking control of my health...
I joined 5 baseball teams for excercise.
OK OK, so they are fantasy teams, but it keeps my mind sharp.
I am jumping to conclusions...great for the legs.
My doctor said I need more greens...

So, now if I get out and fish more I can eat more fish and less red meat.
It's a WIN WIN situation!

health: Losing weight is the hardest things I have ever done. - 03/02/14 08:39 AM
I am great at finding things I have lost
Especially when it comes to weight.
But, when I find what I have lost, it seems that I find a bit extra.
I have tried many different ways to lose, but life style usually gets n the way.
So, I am thinking of going the old fashioned way...

health: New Health Care Law could hit your pocketbook....Hard! - 02/10/14 04:33 AM

Randi has made some great points.
Low wages or high, we are all going to see a higher tax burden.
But what will it be.
Talking with a professional is paramount in protecting your next egg.
Don't wait, do it today for tomorrow may beway to late in the game.
While we don't know all the implications of the new law, we do know that there will be some.
Especially for higher wage earners.
But low wage earners need to be watchful also.
You need to get informed NOW so you are ready for next year.\

health: Top 10 Indoor Houseplants For Your Air Quality - 01/25/14 03:49 AM

David hits upon a great part of our lives.  Happiness.  This is one way that you can make your life better in more than one way.
Our health is very important  and plants can help 2 parts.  Our physical and our mental.
Not every one can have a dozen plants, but even a couple is a benefit.
Houseplants are great for decorating. They can brighten up any room. Plus, houseplants can increase the air quality in a room. That makes you happier, healthier and reduces stress.
Speaking of stress, these plants won't create any at all. All of the plants on … (8 comments)

health: Yes...the flu season is upon us. - 12/31/13 04:19 AM
In our area at least they push the Flu shots heavily.
I for one have never gotten one.
I don't use the germ-X of other similar products.  I wash with soap and water, but I don't go over board.
I believe there are enough germs I can acquire to help me stay healthy without trying to kill off everything I touch.
But, I watch as others poor on the killing agents and then suffer from the sniffles and coughs.  Other have come down with the Flu anyways, mostly because the shot only cover a few strains.
Prevention is always bestand if … (8 comments)

health: Dementia...Very hard to watch. - 10/18/13 09:47 AM
A family friend has this condition.  We have watched it progress.  It has been a slow process.  Hard on the loved ones to watch, but also hard on the person who has it.
I has to be hard knowing you are losing your mind, sort of, not being able to remember the simplest things.  Asking the same question time and time again.
It can frustrate the ones around the person.
I can only imagine how it has to frustrate the person with it.

health: A short Story about Tom. - 09/20/13 08:02 AM
This is a short story about Tom.
Tom was a young 20 something.  Good job, wife and 3 great kids.
Like most 20 something's, Tom was invincible.
He had a desk job and the in town home gave him a lot of time to watch the tube.
Tom's greatest workout was using the remote for the TV when games were on multiple channels.
Potato chips, beef sticks and all kinds of fatty foods were his norm.
But he was young and although his wife pleaded with him to get a checkup, he wasn't over weight and he was Young.
End of … (6 comments)

health: Pre-hydration...That's the key. - 07/24/13 09:11 AM
WE have a lot of summer left. The hot humid days are hear for some and will return for the rest.
We talk a lot about getting de-hydrated.
A key to stave that off is drink a large glass of water BEFORE you start your activity. This gives your body something to start on and you won't de-hydrate so quickly.
I have done this for years and it works very well.

health: My favorite CD - 03/26/13 08:02 AM
When I need to unwind from what ever has me tight, I grab my favorite CD.

The sound of the rushing water will calm me down in minutes.  I just imagine myself walking along a babbling creek and my cares melt away.
It really doesn't matter what you do to unwind, but it is good for your health.

health: Norovirus...Hard to kill - 01/28/13 07:22 AM
This new virus strain is hitting the Nation and experts say there is very little you can do.
Hand sanitizers will NOT kill it.  Basically...other than BLEACH...it is one tough bug to beat.
Washing hands is still very important, but it needs to be more than 30 seconds and under the nails also.
This virus will spread on everything and it doesn't wash off easily.  Even hand washed dishes will still have the virus on them because you can't get the water hot enough.
Hand shaking is the worst thing you can do...Direct Contact is out!
The information available is pages … (31 comments)

health: My Doctor says laughing is good for me. - 10/20/12 12:12 AM
My doctor says I am in good health and I should keep doing what I am doing.  So, I am going to help others with a smile...
Little Johnny found a wallet and doing the rightful thing he found the owner and returned it.
"Young man, you did a very nice thing." and she opened her wallet and looked..."But, when I lost my wallet I had a $20 bill in it and now I have 20 singles."
"Yes" said Johnny.  "I know that.  The last time I found a wallet the lady didn't have any ones for a reward, so I … (19 comments)

health: The reason we were told not to swallow your gum. - 09/26/11 02:30 PM
I stopped by the local fitness club to talk business with the owner.
We were chatting for a while when he asks me...
"Did your parents ever tell you not to swallow your gum?"
"Yea, I guess they did, why?' I asked.

"Come with me." he said

So we headed towards a room in the back and here is what I saw...

Never again!!!

health: I am as healthy as a horse... - 09/12/11 01:18 PM
"Yea, the 'Old Grey Mare'" my wife chimed in.  "Did you forget how you felt when you back went out and you stayed home last week?"
Sure, got a little sore and now I am an invalid.
So to prove that I am right, I made my Drs appointment.  Went through the testing and was told I have the mind of a 30 year old!  My body is still in it's mid 50's but my mind is young!
The check up did give me a chance for the Dr. to explain a few things to me, like where some of my … (3 comments)

health: Rain, Heat, Humidity....GO AWAY!!! - 08/06/11 07:28 AM
I will say that I am not the only person ready for some cooler weather.
I usually don't get all bent out of shape because of the heat and humidity, but I am getting very far behind on my personal work because I can't work as fast or hard.
The weather man said cooler and less humid for next week.  I sure hope so, otherwise the two or six of us are going to have a talk!
Don't forget the pets and other animals that depend on you for water and food.

KEEP COOL!!!

health: Problem losing weight? Read on! - 06/18/11 12:19 PM
I have a small weight problem.  I work hard to control it, but it is not easy.  But I think I finally found the answer and it was so simple!
I should have figured this out sooner!
It is the shampoo I use in the shower. When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down over my entire body.Written very plainly on the lable it reads..."For extra volume and body!"
Well DUH...That is exactly what I DON'T want.
So, I have gotten rid of my Shampoo and I have bought 'Dawn Dish washing Soap'.It's label reads..."Dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to … (19 comments)

health: In Minnesota...it is Deer Tick Season - 04/25/11 03:12 PM
It is that dreaded season again.
Tick Season.
The Deer tick is known for transmitting Lymes disease.  This can be and is a very debilitating illness.   Deer Ticks, unlike Wood ticks burrow into and under the skin.  I had one that had to be cut out.
A woodtick usually only bites and stays in one place.
If you get a Tick bite and you get a large red circle after wards...See your Dr. right away.

health: I find that I am aging, but not real gracefully. - 01/14/11 03:15 PM
With another birthday coming soon, I am reminded, especially by my wife, that I am not as young as I used to be.  I can't do what I used to do, or, at least not as fast.
Even my Dr. commented the other day when I was in to see  him...
"Bill, I am afraid I have some bad news.  You are dying."  The Dr. told me...
"Well, How ling do I have?"  I asked nervously.
"Ten" he replied.
"TEN! TEN what?!  Months, weeks, Years?" I asked excitedly.
To which he replied..."Nine...."

health: Snow Shoveling Safety... - 11/13/10 12:32 PM
Every year the ER's are filled with people who have pulled a muscle or thrown their backs out and even Heart attacks.  Some of these people do not survive.   So, once again here are a few tips to help ease the pain...

1)  Stretch!!!  It does not matter if you work out or are a desk sitter, a few minutes of stretching the muscles can save a major muscle pull.
2)  Take smaller scoops!  I see many people buy a shovel that they have no chance in filling and then moving the snow in it.  A smaller shovel will … (7 comments)

health: Do you have a private well? Have you had the water tested lately? - 04/19/10 02:38 PM
This is something that many people don't think of doing, especially those with a shallow well.   Contaminated can filter into the underground water source without you even knowing it.
I can't count the times that A water test has come up with a problem during the sale process.  Even my Daughters water was bad with out her knowing it and making my granddaughter sick.  Only because they were selling the home that it was discovered.
After the move and now with good water...she felt better within days.
Do Yourself and your family a favor and do the test.  Usually less then … (12 comments)
