hunting: Minnesota Deer Hunters....Wake up!!! - 10/24/11 02:26 PM
The Minnesota Firearms Deer season is nearly upon us.
Below is what many of us are looking for, (Although, this is a bit small in my book and he is just a young deer)

But, you had better be ready.  90% of you have not shot your rifle or shotgun since last year.
Most have no idea where all their gear is.
Over 1/2 only have an idea of where they will hunt and most of the others have not even stepped into the woods to check out the stand s that they use every year.
All of this leads … (5 comments)

hunting: It is 4 am and my alarm is still sleeping. - 11/05/10 11:09 PM
I was in bed early...11 pm.  ( Well, that's early for me. )
I woke up at my normal time of 4 am.  OK, my normal time for Deer hunting Opener.  But, this year (and last as I now remember) Starts an hour later because we have not turned our clocks back.
The alarm would have gone off at 5, but I shut it off as not to wake Sleeping Beauty! Although, I have little doubt that she knows I am already up.
Now, I am not sure if it is the early hour or if I am going crazy, but … (5 comments)

hunting: NO...I am not Santa, but I am checking my list. - 11/05/10 01:51 PM
My wife just informed me that I have checked my list twice for the 5th time tonight.   No, it isn't Christmas, it is something that I hold almost as important.
Minnesota's Firearms Deer Season Opener.  My wife just shakes her head.  She says I have more planning for Deer Hunting than I do for vacation.
Well, this is true.  I have a note pad with 4 legal pages full of things I need to do, AND, I don't even stay over night!   But I will be out of town and no way for me to run back for what I forgot.
So, … (10 comments)

hunting: The Progression of Fall. - 10/14/10 12:57 PM
Fall in my area is like the end of a horse race..."And down the straightaway they come..."
What started out like this...

Has now given way to this...
Just a pile of brown leaves waiting for the next resting place as they return to dirt.   It didn't take long this year, about 2 weeks.  Some years we will get close to 4 weeks of the pretty bright colors.
The bright side of the early fall of the leaves is that I get them picked up before Hunting season comes and I get more time in the woods that … (8 comments)

hunting: It's the first of August...Time to start thinking about 'Hunting Land'. - 08/01/10 03:10 PM
I know, many of you are thinking that it is still summer.  In most people's minds it is, but those of us who hunt...fall is fast approaching.
For those wanting to buy a chunk of land to hunt on, now is the time to start looking.   There are many things to consider.  Here are just a few...
1. What will you be hunting for?
2. Will this property be used solely for hunting or will it have other uses?
3. What area would you like to stay in.
4. Will your hunting interests be full filled in the area you are considering.

hunting: It's not quite fishing time, My Turkey season is 2 weeks away...What's a country boy to do? - 04/18/10 11:00 AM
It is the annual Snipe Hunt!  and our Victim is...Umm I mean, Hunting Partner is a good friend, one of whom has never been Snipe Hunting.  That would be Jack.
It was the perfect night...Very dark and overcast.  Just a slight wind crossing our quarries lair, and just cool enough to see a hint of your breath.
Now, I know many of you are saying, "Just how do you Snipe Hunt?"  Well, I am just the guy to tell you.
First of all, a Snipe is a delicious bird that we hunt in early spring.  They mate mainly in the fall, so … (12 comments)

hunting: Feeding Wildlife...What does your Local Government Say? - 11/19/09 09:36 AM
There is some big concerns about the feeding of wildlife.  Anything from Birds to Deer to you name it.   Many say that it is unnatural and if you stop feeding, the wildlife suffers from the lack of 'Needing' to look for food.
Many concerns are about disease.  This one is more of a large game issue.  The big issue on this one is that by feeding large amounts of food to deer and bear, always in the same spot, and animal with a disease will transmit it much more quickly in the close quarters of a feeding area.
SOLUTIONS:
First...birds.  Most … (15 comments)

hunting: It's just after 3am...and my alarm still didn't go off... - 11/06/09 08:03 PM
No it's not Christmas or Easter.  There is a great reward awaiting for me if I can only catch up to it.   I have been really busy and have not had the time to prepare as I would like to have.  Although, not much changes from year to year and I have been in the same place for the last 17 years.
Images are Dancing through my head...and sugar plums are not it.   I am sure Dad is nearly awake also as we have not missed this day together since we started 39 years ago.  Things are not the same as they were … (7 comments)

hunting: Build, hunt or play in North Branch,MN - 10/16/09 09:18 AM
This property has potential galore.  Some developement could be possible, but it will make a great home site.  50 acres total, 40 of it is wooded and access to major roads only a mile away.  The area is sparsly populated and wildlife run the area as if they own it.
The property is the top oange boxand teh road access is on the bottom(south) side of the property.  Don't let your dream get away.  $250,000 is a great price for all these otptions.

hunting: Care is needed when walking out in the woods this fall! - 10/11/09 10:17 AM
I am not worried about you falling and getting hurt.  Nor am I afraid you will get lost.  It is hunting season and I am worried that you will walk around out in the woods wearing a brown coat and look like this...
To a hunter that is a distance away.  True...a hunter should not shoot unless he is sure of the target, BUT, do you want to take that chance?  Many people are in the woods, some where they don't belong or have permission.  That includes the walkers and the hunters alike.
You may be looking at land to … (8 comments)

hunting: Fall Passion time is upon us. - 08/28/09 03:18 PM
For many of us outdoors type that means Hunting and some late fall fishing.  Small game seasons are startine and big game is at our door steps.   I am still getting some calls about purchasing land for fall hunting.
NOW, is the time...if you wait much longer, you will have to find a place to hunt that isn't your own.  There are many good parcels waiting to be snatched up and if you wait they WILL be gone.
Call TODAY...and I will put you in a place that fits your type of hunting or other recreation.

hunting: It is June 21st and my favorite Hunting Magazine is here. - 06/21/09 02:26 PM
I go through this every year.  About this time frame my "North American Whitetail" magazine arrives.
Right now, I am ingrained heavily in fishing with a couple of outings planned for the near future.  Now, I looked through the magazine and my head is swimming with details that I have put off this spring.   Areas of the woods that need to be cleared out some, fix and build new stands.
Most of this stuff will be running through my head while I am on the water.  It's my way of 'multi-tasking'.
If things could only be this difficult!

hunting: Early Season Starts Tomorrow! - 10/10/08 11:14 AM
It's that time again that many outdoors men and women, and even kids, head for the woods after the elusive white tail deer.  Although always a worthy quarry, it isn't as hard as it was 30 years ago.  Intensive management has brought on many opportunities to come in contact with the Whitetail Deer.  That also includes with your car.
For me, this weekend is the early antlerless hunt.  It means that many families will be out with the younger hunters.  It means it is time for me to pull out the orange clothing and check all the equipment so I am ready … (4 comments)
