safety: Smoke and Carbon Dioxide Detectors...Combo's? - 10/09/13 07:26 AM
Maybe one of our great inspectors can answer this one.
As we know, Smoke comes from a heat source and rises.  Carbon Monoxide is a gas heavier than air.
So, if smoke rises, then the detector should be near the ceiling.
Since Carbon Monoxide is heavy and sinks, it should be placed at the floor level.
So, since these two issues have different main areas of detection, how can we have both in one detector and have them work properly.
Does not make sense to me.  Am I wrong?

safety: Minnesota Fishing Opener...Safety First. - 05/07/13 01:18 PM
Cold water will be the biggest danger for the fishing opener.
I have never been one to wear a life jacket.  I hate the bulkiness of them.
This year, I am upgrading my life vest.   It is a very narrow strip on both sides of my chest.
Doesn't look like it would keep me afloat, but, this vest inflats when it hits the water.  So, if I fall out of the boat, the vest will inflate enough to keep my head above water.
This year more than ever...Safety is number one!!!

safety: When is the right time? - 10/18/12 10:55 PM
I have been asked this question before..."When is the right time to teach a child about guns?"
MY response...As soon as possible!
As a society, we are fixated on guns.  Not the enjoyment but the bad!  We hear almost nothing but the bad about guns.
My opinion is that children need to understand how to handle a gun.  WHY?  So that when they may find one they know what to do.  Namely...don't pick it up and don't point it at others.
More young kids are hurt by guns because they really have no idea of what can happen.  Especially very young … (8 comments)

safety: Fireworks are not toys...Don't try this at home Kids! - 06/29/12 11:13 AM
Hell, don't any one try this anywhere.
Firewoks are fun but are very dangerous even in the hands of the professionals.  Illeagal in some states and leagal in others, many people just have no idea.
I ask that everyone think twice before lighting off that cracker or rocket.  Come home with all 10 and clear eyes.

This is what happens when you mix stupid with alcohol...

NEED I SAY MORE????????

safety: Where did you go to get your conceal and Carry Permit? - 03/11/12 11:06 AM
I have written before about safety and what to do about protection.
A friend told me I was over the top!  "Do you know what the chances really are of needing to carry."
Well, he just called me the other night..."Bill, where did you go to get your conceal and carry permit...I need one fast!"
My friend is a plumber in an area not know for violent crimes.  But when he went into a vacant house to do some work for the new owners...He heard come commotion in the basement.  He yelled down and heard people going out the basement door.

safety: One cold day does NOT make for safe ice! - 01/12/12 09:27 AM
You knew it was bound to happen...one semi-cold day (5 above) and some fool would try and go where they should not on the ice.
The guy fell through the ice on a local river.  My opinion, ice is never safe on a river where there is always a current and that current is always changing.
The rescue team hauled his sorry butt out of the cold and now he has to get his machine out of the water.  There will also be a big fine for having a motor vehicle no mater what kind fall into the water.
Now, I … (8 comments)

safety: Some Like it Cold. Some Like it Hot! - 12/14/11 10:34 AM
Sounds like a Nursery rhyme doesn't it.
But it is the sentiment of the people in the clod weather climes.  WE have NO snow at this point and weather in the 30's most of the week still.   The skiers and snowmobilers are complaining.
The Ice Fishermen have been sneaking out on the ice and today I heard of one going through the ice on a local lake.
I have a hard time feeling sorry for these people when there really is a small amount of ice and the weather has been so nice.
The the big concern is the … (5 comments)

safety: Are you ready for those unexpected days? - 04/05/11 02:48 PM
Spring can be a real unexpected weather driven time.  Just today the severe storms in the south east devastated some communities and brought heart ache to  many families.
Today, over 1300 storm warniings were put out.
But, Let's not concentrate on the bad.  Lets look at how prepared you are for a disasster or more like how UNPREPARED you are.
If disaster hits could you survive for a week without help.  How about 3-4 days?  One day?
Let's look at some things you need to have to be prepared.
A GOOD flashlight with extra batteries.Several gallons of fresh drinking water.Canned … (8 comments)

safety: The Ice on Minnesota's Lakes and Ponds are still UNSAFE! - 12/01/10 09:27 AM
Those that enjoy the Hard Water times in our great State need to wait just a bit longer.  We have had some cold weather, but not as cold as it needs to be.  The ponds are frozen over as are many of the lakes, but that ice is not thick enough to walk on yet.
The Minnesota Natural Resources say 4-5 inches of ice for foot traffic.   Even at this thickness there can be much thinner areas and a person need to be real careful.
Before our last snowfall I check my small pond behind the house and found about … (7 comments)

safety: A deadly Killer... - 10/13/10 03:53 AM
Carbon Monoxide!!!   This silent killer is responsible for many deaths every year and the heating season is prime time!  Check those CO detectors and consider getting one that costs more than 20 bucks!
NOW!!! Is the time to get that furnace checked.  If you burn wood, make sure the chimney is clear and cleaned.  Some kind of a cold air supply is also needed, especially in NEW homes that are so air tight.  Negative air pressure inside, caused by the burning of the oxygen in the home that is not readily replaced,  will keep this harmful gas from leaving the … (43 comments)

safety: Deer/Car Collisions in Minnesota - 10/11/10 02:43 PM
October is one of the worst months of the year in Minnesota for Deer and Cars to meet on the road.  There are several reasons for this...
Hunter in the woods.  There are all kinds of hunter in the woods at this time.  unsuspecting Deer run for safety and many times cross busy roads.
Food sources.  Especially in farm country, as the crops are taken from the fields Deer that were using them and the wooded acreage near them will travel more at low light and dark.  Those travels will place them in harms way.

Mating season.  Yup, this is … (7 comments)

safety: Bullseye Shooting range...More than just a target! - 09/26/10 12:06 PM
My previous post I talked about the personal safety course that I took.  Bullseye shooting range is where we did our shooting to qualify.
I have driven past this venue for sportsman of all kinds but had never been inside.   This place is not just a shooting range but a full service gun shop also.
With rentals available at great prices and instructions also, they make shooting a fun and affordable sport.  check them out at... www.northbranchbullseye.com
They have a full range of  firearms courses available for all ages.  There are even courses that are non-shooting for those that just … (4 comments)

safety: They can't all have somewhere to go!!! - 07/01/10 11:08 AM
Well, I finally got underway for the weekend.   It 's a nice drive and so while I am driving, I thought I would write this blog.  OH...Don't worry, I put the car in cruise control!
OK OK...I just stopped for coffee and I am waiting for a client.
As I have been driving and seeing all the traffic of people starting the weekend early, a thought came to mind.
Just where is everyone going.  I try to imagine all the places that they could go and the list is endless.   A statement that my dad made many years ago.   … (11 comments)

safety: And we wonder why Medical costs have gone up! - 06/08/10 09:58 AM
WE all see people do stupid things and I have seen a few come through the Emergency rooms and why they say what they did...the first thing that comes to mind is DUH!!!
So here are a few medical bills to come...
At least the guy is holding onto the bucket...union rules!
Who said we need to cover this?
Hey, it is cheaper than buying a bigger ladder for one job.
If this driver takes off to fast, the guy in the canoe will be 'up the street without a paddle!'
This looks like a job out of the country.  … (11 comments)

safety: Microchip Implants for Terrorists. - 01/01/10 11:30 AM
With the recent terror attack on the commercial air line, we are back at being concerned about the terrorists. (About time!)  So, here is a microchip that really needs to be used to solve some of the problems.
The Patriot Microchip is intended to be implanted in Terrorists.
The implant is specifically intended to be implanted into the forehead.
When properly implanted, it will allow the one implanted to speak directly to GOD!
The implant comes in a variety of sizes.

The exact size of the implant will be determined by a highly skilled technician.

safety: Spring is here and summer is on the Way, What are your Emergency Plans? - 04/07/09 09:28 AM
Summers are nortorious for emergencies.  A good portion of our country is in the "Tornado Alley" part of the country.  But that isn't the only emergency situation that occurs.  Being prepared and being safe could save your life or the life of a loved one.
Tonado's, lightening and other related storm dangers will be covered by local news and weather stations.  Do you know where it is safe until the storm has passed.
How about finding someone with a heart attach...WHAT should you do first.  Take a CPR and First aid course.  It may be your own that you save.
