winter olympics: I've Got a Winter Olympic Event for You....

Watching the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, I have much appreciation for many events, but am left scracthing my head how some events even make the cut. Don't get me wrong. I really enjoy skill sports like figure skating. Just don't get why there is also ice dancing? Is there a difference? Seems like many of the events are lacking in originality, even athleticism. Come on, what exactly is curling? And what is the difference between the guys that do that and the league bowlers I see at the local lanes?
